What's this?

Liberalism is one of the largest debates on

todays college campuses. Of course,
liberalism will exist with some professors but
not all of them. How you relate to your
professors and how they respond to you is up
to you as a student and is not based on that
instructors political beliefs. Attending class
regularly and participating in class discussions
is the most advantageous way to learn and to
interact with your instructors. If you are
frequently missing from class, its hard to
expect the instructor to believe you are
genuinely concerned about a poor examination
grade even when you approach them about
how to improve.
Most professors are very approachable and will
meet with you either during their office hours or
when you unexpectedly drop in. Some are less
concerned about their students progress and
more concerned with research. Getting to know
your professors and taking multiple courses
with those who have the most significant
impact on your education is not only important
but will help you to achieve greater success in
your academic endeavors. Engineering and
Natural Sciences and Forestry tend to reign as
the two leaders of this academic institution, not
only from their accomplishments within the
UMaine community but for the economic and
educational impacts that the two programs
have on the state. The academic reputation of
UMaine is that of the most distinguished public
higher education institution in the state of

Maine, and it holds the flagship recognition of

the University of Maine System.

Tips to Succeed

Be confident in your knowledge of your future profession. Do not fear giving a

wrong answer.
Discuss bad grades with your professor or teaching assistant. Seek feedback
on your work to succeed in class.
Go to your classes. Even in a section of 200, they know when you're missing.
If you are totally lost in the first week of class, get out or get a tutor.
Meet with your professors to discuss your progress. They like familiar faces.
Pick a major you enjoy, or college will be hell. Don't go into a profession you
hate because the rest of your life will be hell, too.
Read ahead and keep on top of assignments. It's not easy when you fall
behind.
Take advantage of free tutoring, and always stay in an extended class for exam
review time. The professors are handing you answers to topics on exams.
Take classes with professors who are genuinely concerned about your
learning.
Understand what you are doing in class, or begin asking the right questions.

The students who offered responses regarding
their overall experience at UMaine have
overwhelmingly praised the University for its
affect on the students who attend it. Many of
the students make Maine their home, even
after graduation. More in-state students remain
in Maine, while more out-of-state students tend
to move on to other areas, or back to their
indigenous locations. The University has an
abundance of assets of immeasurable value to
offer to its students. There are activities and
clubs for nearly every student interest. There is
some organization that fits well into their
majors, providing real experience within their
fields to build resumes and get careers off to a
head start, while tying them into a new circle of
friends. The Career Center services for job
placement after graduation are not only a help
for current students, but they are available to
students for one year at no charge after
graduation.
The University of Maine prides itself on its
reputation most importantly among its
students, but also with its alumni. UMaine is a
welcoming trip home during alumni functions
and special events. Students graduating from
UMaine also receive a one year complimentary
membership to the University of Maine Alumni
Association. Students also can purchase the
licensing for only $10 to maintain their
FirstClass e-mail accounts in order to stay in
touch while apart from those who became
close to them during their time at UMaine.
Some students said that UMaine was their
choice, some said it was not. Some students
responded saying that they transferred to
UMaine from other institutions, but nearly all of
them have enjoyed their experiences at
UMaine and are proud to call it their alma
mater, andeven more whole-heartedly, their
home.

Things I Wish I Knew Before
Coming To School

Become familiar with the faculty and staff in your department. You'll need to
work with them much more than you may think.
Check FirstClass e-mail multiple times a day.
Classes progress quickly and are cumulative, so don't fall behind.
College students have a lot of free timealthough at times it won't feel that
way.
Do not start packing up your belongings when your watch says it's time to go.
Your instructor hates when students do this, and she or he says when it's time
to go.
Even though it is supplied in residence halls, buy your own toilet paper stash.
Get involved in extracurricular activities to make connections.
If possible, bring a futon to your residence hall your first year.
Strong study skills are needed to succeed.
The first day of each class is usually syllabus day, and it's easy.
Use www.RateMyProfessors.com to choose your professors.
Your professor and teaching assistants want to help you. Go to them.

What's this?

UMaine, much like the rest of the state, lacks in

ethnic and racial diversity. However, the
University has taken strides to make the school
more appealing to diverse groups of incoming
students and is striving to hire and retain a
more diverse faculty. Diversity, according to the
University, encompasses all aspects of self and
group identification. Areas of interest for the
expansion of diversity are age, culture,
ethnicity, gender, nationality, race, religion,
sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status.
The Diversity Action Plan, adopted by the
University and adjusted each year, is designed
to achieve balance and create greater
understanding of human differences in an
inclusive and interactive campus community.
There are five key components to the plan, all
relating to creating the capacity to express
cultural differences and recognize the heritage
of the student, faculty, and staff populations.
Diversity does not appear to be recognizable
with a mere glance at racial diversity statistics.
Gender, sexual orientation, and all other
differences found within the student body help
make up for a lackluster display of racial
diversity. The University also has difficulty
hiring and retaining minority faculty members
throughout UMS schools. Due to the lack of
diversity in the faculty and staff populations,
several minority faculty members, regardless of
position and tenure status, have left the
campus community after short terms of
employment, even as little as one to two years.

Gay Pride

The University of Maine has a significant gay community. Many members of the
gay community are active in campus organizations. There is a GLBT office in
Memorial Union, with a liaison to the dean of students. The Safe Zone Project
has been implemented at the University to provides gay, lesbian, bisexual. and
transgender persons and their heterosexual allies with a visible means of
indicating support for the GLBT community.

Political Activity

The New England states are typically known as blue states. More students lean
liberal than not. Maine favors the working families and the working poor and
typically holds an anti-war stance. There are more Democrats than Republicans
at the University, which is to be expected for a public New England university.

Economic Status

Students coming from out of state frequently come from households with higher
incomes. UMaine attendance tends to dwindle among the more economically
stressed states.

Most Common Religions

Catholic and non-denominational Christians are most common, but there are seven
religious organizations recognized on the UMaine campus. Most religious
activities occur off campus. To find out more information, students should check
out the Wilson Center and Newman Center, two churches strongly geared
toward the college student population. Both churches are located off campus
on College Avenue.

Minority Clubs on Campus

African Student Association, Asian Student Association, Black Student Union,

IMPACT Movement, Latin American Student Organization, and Wilde Stein
Alliance for Sexual Diversity (UMaine's GLBTQ organization) are the most
popular.

Drug Safety: I had more drug exposure in high-school. It is

easy t o get alcohol and marijuana, but in t rut h America's
legislat ion is very far behind in t he case bot h drugs. There is no
real pressure t o drink, but if you over-do-it and have t o get
UMPD you will be made fun of. The policy here is far. You don't
want you t o die, but realize t hat it is part of t he experience.

What's this?

Most of the drugs pushed around on UMaine's

campus outside of marijuana are prescription
medications. However it may be perceived, the
abuse of prescriptions is still illegal and will land
you with a summons and court date when you
are caught with them. Distribution of
prescription medications in any amount is a
violation of federal law, so it's just not a good
idea anyway. The campus is very strict about
drugs when they find them, and if you have
enough drugs or enough people participating,
the media attention you will get from that type
of behavior will make you feel like a movie star.
It's quite embarrassing to have your name
known through the student newspaper, let
alone the local and regional ones. So your best
advice is to keep out of drugs, especially in
large amounts or with several participants.
There are not many other widely known
abused substances around campus, although
students are aware that the use of highly
addictive substances does exist. However,
cocaine and meth use is very private and is
typically not a problem for other UMaine
students. The campus has many programs
available to provide education and information
about drugs and their prevalence on college
campuses. There are a few different types of
peer education programs that students may
participate in, some are even for course credit.

What's this?

For many students, Greek life is not something

they are interested in becoming a part of. The
organizations are not only dwindling in the
number of members, but in overall appeal to
new students entering UMaine. A recent spike
in participation over the past couple years
made it appear that Greek life was entering a
new phase of development at UMaine. The
uninspiring results of recruitment efforts have
leveled the number of participants to around
the same place it was for years beforejust
under 10 percent overall participation. Some
fraternities have upward of 60 members, with
an overall average between 20 to 30 members
in each organization. The sororities have a cap
of 50 members, at which point they cannot
recruit until sisters defer or graduate. Members
of Greek-letter organizations are proud of their
contributions, houses, and loyalty to their
membership.
The organizations are dedicated to the ideals
of achievement, athletics, friendship,
leadership, and scholarship. However, it
doesn't fool other students from realizing which
organizations stick to the ideals and which
organizations hide behind them. Everyone
quickly becomes familiar with the organizations
that are dedicated to service and those that are
dedicated to partying. For those interested in
Greek life, it is suggested that they take time
and review several organizations before
making a commitment to one. Many members
of fraternities and sororities leave college

knowing that they have made a significant

contribution through their efforts with their
Greek letters.

Did You Know?

Even with a small Greek life population, the organizations still maintain a highly
visible role on campus and in campus events.
Both the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils, in addition to the University of
Maine System, have very stringent policies against hazing within any
organization. Hazing is broadly defined as the emotional, mental, or physical
degradation, discomfort, or humiliation of another individual. All new members
of Greek-letter organizations must read and sign an informational sheet about
hazing with the Greek Life Office after selecting an organization to join.

What's this?

It holds true that all of the beautiful students

appear around the Maine Hello (fall move-in
day) and hibernate as soon as the cold
weather comes. But they'll surely be out once
again lying on their beach towels or playing
ultimate Frisbee in the quad as soon as the
warmer weather returns and the sun shines
past 4 p.m. Most students will say that there
are more unattractive people than not, and the
appearance of students actually may
coordinate with their area of study. Most
people in broadcast journalism will be more
concerned about their appearance than an
education major, and an education major will
care more than the average engineering major.
Most students coming to UMaine are in search
of a good-looking guy or girl to spend some
quality time with, but fewer will actually attain it.
Hooking up or settling down in a relationship is
up to those who are participating in it. One
recommendation for the guys and girls who join
fraternities and sororities: it's typically not the
best idea to date members in the same
organization. You'd be amazed at how quickly
your fraternal experience can become that of a
mid-afternoon soap opera television drama.
The best recommendation for those in search
of a relationship at UMaine is to take your time
looking and find someone who has similar
interests. When the cold winter nights come,
you'll typically spend a lot more time with your
significant other. Otherwise, replace your
significant other with an electric blanket. It'll be

more reliable in keeping you warm.

Social Scene

The social scene is really dependent on what students decide to make it. The social
scene also tends to have the highest visibility on Thursday nights and
weekends. The Greek system's participants have a greater social scene with
other Greeks. Those involved in academic clubs usually participate in activities
with those involved in the same or similarly oriented organizations. The
residence halls are also a great place to find friends and other people to do
things with on weekends.

Hookups or Relationships?

Hooking up or having a relationship is simply personal preference; however, a lot of

hooking up tends to develop into relationships, particularly between first-year
students and upperclassmen.

Dress Code

Some students dress better than others, a lot better. Occasionally, one will see
someone walking down a pathway dressed as though they strutted onto
campus sidewalks after departing from a Saks Fifth Avenue model runway.
Most commonly, men and women will be wearing jeans or khakis with a nice
top. A lot of the students will be seen wearing popular name brands such as
Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle, Express, and Gap. It's nearly
guaranteed that you will be annoyed at some point with another student in one
of your classes who thinks that sporting pajama pants is something new and
exciting. Dressing warm for the winter weather is a necessity, so be sure to
pack a jacket for anytime and a nice coat for special occasions and dress-up
days. Please note: If you plan to wear pajama pants, get something unique, not
teeny-bopper Aeropostale brand pajamas with monkey faces plastered all over
them, and wear sneakers, not nice shoes. Otherwise, you'll just look silly.

What's this?

The campus is stern about the regulations that

are in place, but there isnt an overbearing
sense of strictness, as though a student must
watch out for every move that they make. The
regulations are only put there to make sure
students keep out of trouble and dont provide
a dangerous environment for other students to
learn and possibly reside in. Most of the
regulations are pretty standard, and all adhere
to federal, state, and local laws. Law
enforcement officers on campus deserve the
respect they are entitled to because they do
exactly what they are supposed to. Public
Safety officers are not security guards, they are
trained state police officers, and yes, they do
carry a handgun and a nightstick. Being
uncooperative with the campus police can land
you a go-to-jail card as quickly as messing with
a police officer in any other situation.
Public Safety officers do all they can to provide
an enjoyable and safe environment for all
students to learn in. It is their responsibility to
ensure that the campus has little crime. The
reputation of the police force is based on
integrity. Any student will be able to see this if
they take the time to get to know at least one
officer by name, which is easy to do because
they are always accessible. The only thing that
Public Safety officers enjoy more than
providing a safe campus community is the
opportunity to interact and work with the
students and to know them on a first-name
basis.

What's this?

If you didnt like any of the food in your high

school cafeteria, then chances are that you
wont enjoy the commons food at UMaine. The
food is a basic lineup of options that allow the
most number of students to have a satisfying
meal. But, the difference is that at college you
have the choice to eat at any of the commons,
so your options are open as to what type of
food you want to have for dinner. Chances are
that the same will not apply for breakfast,
especially if youre a late-riser who chooses to
hold off until the last minute, throw on your
clothes, and scarf down a meal so fast you
wont remember what you had by lunchtime.
There is a variety of available foods for all
meals in the commons. You may also choose
to eat at one of the more popular restaurants in
Memorial Union.
The food in the commons is one of the most
frequent complaints by students living in
residence halls because most upperclassmen
are not going to select the block plan option,
especially if they reside off campus. There is
one important thing to remember: Your parents
didnt mass produce a meal for hundreds of
students, three times a day, every day, so dont
expect the food here to be like home-cooking.

What's this?

UMaine offers great housing options for firstyear students and upperclassmen. The
apartment suites on campus work on a priority
basis, so it is difficult to get in your first year,
unless you have plans to live with a relative
that attends UMaine and already resides in
one. Oak Hall also provides very nice and
renovated singles for upperclassman housing.
The Graduate School is housed in Balentine,
where mostly singles are available for students
ages 21 and up.
First-year housing is mixed between all of the
dormitory-style residence halls. These rooms
consist primarily of doubles, and some singles
are available, but they must be requested far in
advance due to the limited capacity for firstyear students. The halls have all the amenities
students need, including communal kitchens in
the basement, as well as ample study lounges
and areas to socialize. The residence halls are
fairly strict about restricted items such as
candles, halogen lighting, and hot plates. They
are clean and up-to-date. The University is
very good about making the necessary
changes and renovations to housing, even
though most lack modern aesthetic design
features. However, preserving the original
appearance of the buildings, which marks the
era of UMaine history that they were
constructed in, appears important to the
University. The historic side of campus still
maintains the beautiful original architecture that
first occupied the campus.

What's this?

A majority of the facilities on campus are not

only aesthetically appealing, they are
continuously being modernized and updated
when necessary. Memorial Union is one of the
busiest buildings on campus. From restaurants
to restrooms, it is well-maintained and very
clean. New additions to the Union are
constantly being added. The Union has
everything a student needs from the computer
cluster to the post office. The fitness center
and gymnasium provides students with many
modernized amenities. The Field House has
good equipment, a staffed swimming pool with
several open-swim hours throughout the day,
and great facilities for athletic games. Latti
Fitness Center has unlimited use for students
who pay a fee for membership each semester.
The classrooms have the proper equipment
required for instruction and are kept up-to-date
with modern technology. Raymond H. Fogler
Library is the states largest research library.
The library has plenty of facilities available for
quiet studying on the top levels of the building.
The social butterflies are best suited for the
first floor of the library, particularly the Reserve
Reading Room, where conversations
perpetually distract all bookworms who
eventually filter out of the room and seek
refuge on the second and third floors. The
noisy first floor of the library also houses the
Oakes Room Caf, where students frequently
retreat for much needed caffeine boosts.

Favorite Things To Do

The game room in Memorial Union is a popular student attraction, or distraction

depending on how you look at it. Having dinner from one of the many
restaurants in the Memorial Union dining room is always a student favorite, and
the Campus Activities Board holds events six nights a week (Monday to
Saturday). The annual Bumstock concert in the spring is the most-attended
event on campus. Also, there are always trips to the Maine Bound Adventure
Center, University of Maine Museum of Art, and Maine Center for the Arts
concerts and performances.

What's this?

Campus parking is at a premium with everincreasing enrollment rates, the continued

allowance of first-year student parking, and the
seemingly shrinking parking lots. For those
who don't mind walking a short distance,
perimeter parking passes are available at a
lower cost and this prevents headaches from
continuously circling the lots in search of a
parking spot that doesn't seem to exist. Illegal
parking fines are assessed by the University
depending on the severity of the violation. All
tickets are permitted to be assessed hourly, so
if a student neglects to move a vehicle that is
illegally parked for three hours, it can be
ticketed up to three times, and students can
couple that with the cost of towing and storage.
Students should think twice before pulling up to
the first strip and parking, or attempting to
camouflage a lime green Volkswagen Beetle
neatly parked on the grass. By doing so, you
will have nearly turned your vehicle into a felon,
and no amount of flower-power will break
through the chain-linked fence at Sullivan's, a
local holding trap for the vehicles of owners
accused of illegally parking. The towing rates
and daily compounded vehicle storage costs
are damages that a college budget simply
cannot afford. Parking Services has been
working hard to relieve the parking difficulties
on campus by expanding lots and rearranging
existing lots to accommodate more vehicles.
However, as the single largest complaint by
students, the situation continues to remain a

stressor, particularly for commuters.

What's this?

There are a limited number of open computer

clusters in comparison to the number of
computer labs available within classroom
buildings. Many of the classroom building
computer labs are locked, and if not, they have
limited access by password and can only be
used by students enrolled in majors within that
college or department. The number of
computers available for use in the open
computer labs is adequate, although it gets
congested during the late-morning hours
through the middle of the afternoon.
Another concern about using the public
computer clusters is logging off each time you
leave the computer. By doing so, you can
protect yourself from someone who may use
the computer to look up inappropriate content,
send inappropriate messages, or spread virusinfected items under your account. The
network on campus is reliable and safe. The
maintenance done on the computer network
rarely makes it inaccessible for extended
periods of time. The wireless network on
campus is very accommodating and provides
almost entirely uninterrupted service to users
even when it is managing heavy computer
traffic. Bringing a laptop to campus is highly
recommended because it provides excellent
versatility, and wireless Internet can be
accessed in almost all classrooms.

Did You Know?

If a student has selected a teacher certification, or is seeking a field in the

College of Education and Human Development, they must have a laptop,
preferably an Apple MacBook. If students purchase their MacBook through the
University, a three-year Apple Care Plan is included on the system.
The Memorial Union basement computer cluster provides students with both
PC and Mac options to work on.
Audio-Visual Services in Shibles Hall provides notebook computers and other
equipment for free on a short-term basis for classes, projects, and research

What's this?

Public transportation is easily accessible both

on and off campus. Public transportation
services run from Orono to Bangor and
throughout the surrounding communities. The
BAT Bus, which is one of the most popular
modes of public transportation for students, is
free with your MaineCard. The BAT Bus makes
regular trips to Bangor Mall and other local
businesses. The BAT Bus only runs until the
early evening hours, so it is not always the
most reliable source of transportation,
especially if students know that they will be on
campus until late hours of the night. Taxi
services are available throughout the night,
most running 24 hours a day. Although, most
of the time it is easier to get a ride from a
friend. Personal vehicles are definitely the most
relied-upon transportation for students. Most
commuters use their vehicles to travel to
campus and frequently do a bit of running
around in between.
Bangor International Airport provides fullservice facilities including a hotel,
transportation services, and vehicle rentals.
The airport is very close to campus and
provides convenient travel arrangements for
students who are from out of state. The airport
is small and is rarely congested with travelers,
therefore, students in a rush to leave for term
breaks and vacations can take it easy; there's
not too much to worry about when arriving at
Bangor International Airport, unless the plane
has already taken off.

Fa ct s & St a t i st i cs
Best Ways to Get Around Town

Biking and walking are not only healthy but reasonable ways to travel around
Orono.
If you're in need to go a little faster, try a bicycle or some nice new roller blades.
(If you choose to blade or skateboard, don't get caught on the patio of
Memorial Union!)
Don't drink and ride! Operating a bicycle under the influence of alcohol may
cost you your driver's license.
Take your car or ask a friend for a lift.

Best Ways to Get to the Airport

A cab ride to Bangor International Airport from campus is about $20.

BAT Bus, an airport taxi service, is available to take students to Bangor
International Airport. For more information, visit www.flybangor.com/taxi.asp.

What's this?

Orono is a rural village that still manages to

provide all the amenities that students may
desire. The small-town atmosphere provides
students with the opportunity to blend in with
the residents. It is not uncommon to find
yourself on a first-name basis with local
business owners and clerks. Orono is located
at the convergence of the Stillwater and
Penobscot rivers, which provide optimum
conditions for canoeing and kayaking. Orono
primarily consists of woodlands and residential
areas. The business district offers several
small shops and popular restaurants right in
the center of town. Students will find ample
bicycling and hiking trails throughout the
expansive woodlands of the University. In-town
bicycling is limited to roadways and is not
permitted on sidewalks, so the woodlands
provide a nice retreat for the activity.
Pedestrians also have the right-of-way on
Maines roadways, making it more convenient
for walking downtown. Bordering the
northeastern side of Orono is Old Town, home
to the famous Old Town Canoe Company. Old
Town Canoe Company was founded in 1900
by a hardware store owner and now sells about
one-quarter of all canoes.
Orono is eight miles north of Bangor and is the
states third largest city. Downtown Bangors
restaurants and shops offer a great city feeling
without the crowded sidewalks. Bangor has a
big-city feel with its large shopping mall,
barbershops, bookstores, car dealerships, and

more. Beal College, Husson College, and

Bangor Community College are all located in
Bangor.

Fa ct s & St a t i st i cs
Fun Local Trivia

1. Orono is located just 45 minutes from Acadia National Park, home to

Cadillac Mountain, the first place the sunrise becomes visible in the United
States every morning.
2. Orono was originally a pre-Revolutionary War settlement.
3. The town was incorporated in 1806. Residents celebrated Orono's
bicentennial in 2006.
4. Raymond H. Fogler Library is the state's largest research library.

What's this?

Orono's restaurants provide a great variety in

food choices. The restaurants in the area are
among the most popular. Most of the
restaurants are also unique to both the local
area or to Maine. Very few franchises exist in
Orono outside of fast food restaurants. The
Black Bear Bucks program can be utilized at
several of the area restaurants, but students
must be aware of usage charges that the
restaurants may apply for use of the card. The
MaineCard funds may also only be used for
on-campus deliveries, so don't expect to pay
with it when you eat in the restaurants.
Many of the restaurants also have great bars
that the residents find as appealing as the
students do. Margarita's has a great bar and
late-night lounge that offers a quiet and relaxed
atmosphere, which can be interrupted by
special nights such as Full Moon Madness,
which offers students an excellent opportunity
to crowd in and act a little rowdy. The Bear
Brew also provides a very relaxed social
atmosphere with friendly service and a nice
bar. The food is among the best in Orono, but
don't be in a rush, service is often slower than
it is at other local restaurants. The Market Caf
is one of the most popular restaurants in the
area, yet it is often overlooked because of its
family diner-style appearance and location.
The Market Caf has an excellent selection of
Greek food and some of the best pizza around.
For a quiet night out, in a dining room
overlooking the Stillwater river rapids near the

dam, this is the place to relax.

Did You Know?

Lobster rolls, a cold lobster sandwich on a hot dog or hoagie roll, are not only a
favorite Mainer's lunch, but they are available at many McDonald's restaurants
throughout the state.
Popovers, a traditional bread product with a hollow-like inside, are frequently
substituted for regular breads in some coastal restaurants.
More wild blueberries are produced in Maine than anywhere else in the world.
Try them in your muffins, pancakes, or waffles. You're sure not to be
disappointed with the freshest supply available anywhere.
Orono has a variety of restaurants to suit even the pickiest appetite. Students
will find that many restaurants and other local businesses have discounts and
participate in programs to attract student business. Many of the businesses are
owned by local residents who feel that UMaine students are the reason Orono
businesses thrive.

What's this?

Off-campus housing options are abundant

throughout Orono and Old Town. Bangor offers
housing not only at lower costs, but in a
different atmosphere, which may be appealing
to some students. Orono has several
apartment buildings, homes that have been
converted to apartments, as well as housing
complexes. The complexes are filled with
newer apartments and townhouses that are
very appealing to students. Many of these
areas have waiting lists, so housing is not
guaranteed soon after contacting the landlords
about your housing needs. Orono has an
abundance of smaller, affordable apartments in
town. These tend to be much less expensive
than more elaborate apartment complexes.
Most of these apartments are a good find
because utilities such as heat and water are
often included in the rent, potentially saving
students hundreds during winter months,
especially if the apartment has electric heat.
Both the apartment buildings and the
complexes have a variety of housing options
within them. This housing choice will be
significantly more expensive in a complex, and
most of the time, no utilities are included
besides trash removal and snow plowing. Two, three-, and four-bedroom apartments and
houses are available throughout the area, but
these tend to be limited. Searching for a house
early is highly advised, especially since
apartment finding becomes cutthroat edging
into the early summer months. Students can

convenient ly locat ed, and close t o t he school.

What's this?

The nightclubs in the Orono and Old Town

areas have little to offer outside of a popular
social atmosphere. Since the clubs are
enjoyable socially, and several come without
the added expense of a cover charge on
regular nights, they are frequented by
students. The most popular club night is
Thursday, because that is the evening when
the best drink specials are offered. For those
who choose not to drink alcoholic beverages,
the clubs can be pretty bland. The location of
all Orono clubs is within walking distance of
campus. Some are farther than others;
however, Curva is located just across the street
from the east exit of campus. It is easily
accessible and often holds a lot of sponsored
parties and events that make it more popular
among students.
The Orono clubs have expanded and added
more features since they have become the
central social scene for club nightlife. 103
offers an excellent social atmosphere and was
already established upon its opening because
of the reputation of the Bear Brew Pub. Private
parties still remain the premier social
atmosphere for UMaine students. Most private
parties take place in apartments and houses
off campus. They do exist in some residence
halls and can be successful if they dont get out
of control.

Organization Parties

Many organizations hold parties and dances on campus, but they are both
University-catered and difficult to misbehave at. Some organizations have
parties at Ushuaia and other local establishments, and they're usually a great
Friday or Saturday night activity. Hall Governing Boards and other
organizations will occasionally sponsor chem-free parties, which give students
the opportunity to participate in dry social events within their own residence
halls, or at Memorial Union.

Staar Club at the University Inn

The Staar Club is a small place with a regular crowd. It doesn't matter how you
look when you go there. Admire the Jagermeister bottles lining the back of the
bar, or socialize with the locals. This bar is always sporting a mixed crowd.
There are some nice activities to take up time, including pool. But this bar is
small, gets crowded fast, and is a home base for overly intoxicated individuals
who need a short walk home. The staff is incredibly friendly to students
patronizing the establishment.

Bear Brew Pub

Bear Brew Pub is a great place to meet with friends, have a few beers, and
hang out, or to dance and enjoy the music. The club and the restaurant,
especially the bar, are packed on weekends. The establishments have a great
atmosphere, good food, friendly service, and they fit within the college budget.
For a good time locally, this is the place to be. It's not only very popular among
the students, many residents frequent the establishments, and you will regularly

What's this?

If you're looking for a school where you can

wear flip-flops and khaki-colored cargo shorts
year-around, then it would be recommended
that you purchase a College Prowler guide for
another university a little closer to the equator.
For those who enjoy winter weather with great
skiing conditions and mild summers, this is
definitely the area you should be looking for in
a college or university. The winter is an
excellent time to relax, even if you're just into
curling up against the window in your residence
hall reading a book while looking out at the
snowfall. The winter weather does require
some preparation. Warm clothing is not
optional, it's a must. There will be mornings
when you wonder what the funny tingling is
inside of your nosethat's actually your nose
hairs freezing as you walk to classwhile the
wind is blowing against your face and melting
snow atop your head.
Maine has memorable summers, a long and
dreary, yet peaceful winter, and practically no
spring season. It's almost as though winter just
melts into warm summer sunshine. Of course,
Maine is the most beautiful in fall, the season
of slow drivers and leaf-peeping. Driving
around looking at the astounding foliage is as
much fun as hopping into the car and driving
around the neighborhood looking at the
neighbor's Christmas lights as children. Be
prepared for cold weather, and when others
say it snows a lot, they really mean that it
snows all the time. So don't forget about those

L.L. Bean boots, and some snow pants will

come in handy for winter fun.
