The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities
to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards.
Name of Article: Multicultural Journal
Date: June 25, 2015
Course: EDUC255, Multicultural Teaching
Description:
Over six weeks, the students are to keep a journal of multicultural experiences they
observe in everyday life. They are to provide a brief 200 word description and 100 word
reflection on each experience.
Rationale:
By staying aware of multicultural experiences in everyday life, students can pay more
attention to the multicultural environment in their future classrooms. By providing a personal
reflection, it is also possible to discover any shortcomings the students may have, either in
understanding the experience or in their personal feelings towards it.

MULTICULTURAL JOURNAL

Experience Description
Multicultural experiences seem to not only happen in common everyday life, but they
also seem common in online environments. In my free time, I enjoy playing online games
alongside friends and random strangers, and in my time doing this, I come into contact with
many different people. Not all of them say anything, but the way many people act can be very
telling of their own perceptions of games and how they feel about a teamwork-based
environment
Most of the time, the friends that I play with and I like to adhere to a series of objectives
during games. There is a certain way to carry them out, and when it gets done that way, things
usually go smoothly, however many others seem to think they are unimportant, and prefer to do
things their own way, despite the teams wishes. One such reaction to this which I have found is
I dont care, a strange reaction when the game in particular is entirely based on teamwork. Its
just a game is another common reaction, especially from others who perform poorly and put our
team in a worse position. On the other hand, there are some who will go out of their way to insult
me and complain when things do not go their way.
Reflection
I do not know exactly what sort of cultural background many of the people I interact with
have, but the degree of control that they desire or how self-centered their goals are can be very
telling of some parts of their culture. My first reaction to people who desire to be in charge and
giving commands is that they are people who are used to that, either because of how the act in
everyday life or because of how confident they are in their abilities. However, there is a
phenomenon in online culture in which people are less considerate with their words, as if they

are not held accountable for them, which leads to people letting out parts of their personality that
usually would not see the light of day. Because of this, I find it interesting that there is a
possibility that the people barking orders are actually quiet people, who will usually be told what
to do despite their desires to be in charge. In a way, this online environment seems to strip certain
social boundaries that ones culture may impose upon them, showing how limiting to ones self it
can be.
