Local production is limited to basicitems such as syringes and hospital beds. The value of exports is
low, atUS$81.8 million in 2007, with 46.4% of medical products exported to Japan. Vietnam receives
a large amount of international aid in the form of loans anddonated medical equipment. A number of
small projects are currently taking placein Vietnam, including those funded by the World Bank and
the EU. The countrybecame a WTO member in 2007. In 2009, the Vietnamese market for medical
equipment and supplies is estimatedat US$289 million, or US$3 per capita. It is expected that the
device marketwill continue to expand healthily at 5.9% per annum. This will take theVietnamese
market to US$385 million in 2014, although the per capita rate willremain largely unchanged. These
