Alberton Ave Gets The Green Light!

Finally, it looks like something is being done
to make the road outside our office on New
North Rd safer for everyone to use.
Auckland Transport (AT) is working with local
residents, schools and businesses trying to
find a solution to sort the layout of the road
which is long overdue.
Since opening over ten years ago we have
seen more accidents and near misses almost
on a monthly basis involving vehicles trying
to turn right out of Alberton Ave.
A huge number of crashes have occurred at
that junction because cars fail to give way.
Right turning vehicles are required to cross
2 lanes of traffic and wait in the median lane
for a gap in order to merge with
northbound traffic. This proves to be a very
difficult manoeuvre, due to the high volume
of traffic on New North Road and
sometimes drivers are forced to make rash
decisions in order to exit Alberton Ave.
Now AT is proposing to move the existing
traffic lights on New North Rd and relocate
them closer to the intersection of Alberton
Ave to help reduce the risk of collision and
improve overall safety.
In addition, signalising the intersection will
also introduce a pedestrian crossing across
Alberton Avenue making it easier for the
school children to get from A to B. These
improvements aim to make the road and
footpath environment safe as part of A.Ts
coordinated plan to develop safer road
layouts, promote sustainable travel and
ensure ease of passage for those
travelling on foot.

Speaking about the new proposals Anne Duncan said: Im very

pleased that Auckland Transport is finally listening to us. Over
the years weve regularly had to assist motorists traumatised by
crashes outside our door so were definitely looking forward to
the changes coming. Itll make it easier all round for those who
travel in and out of Alberton Ave.
Meanwhile, work has begun on the pedestrian link bridge
making it easier for people to access Mt Albert Station from the
town centre.
The bridge will connect Mt Albert Station with New North Rd
through the town centre car park. This will create a third access
and will make it an easy way to get between the local shopping
areas and the train station. The project is funded by the
Albert-Eden Local Board and delivered by Auckland Transport.
The bridge is expected to open later on this year.

Congrats to the Winners of the

Anne Duncan Colouring Competition!

A vibrant new shop on Mt Alberts New North Rd has been a

welcome addition for residents in the area. The Little Flower
Shop opened its doors just before Christmas and is now a
growing business thanks to the support of the local
neighbourhood. Beautiful bouquets and brilliant coloured
blooms brighten up the pathway outside the little shop giving
it an open and welcoming feel.
Owner Melissa Oakes, whos been in the flower business for
nearly thirty years and has worked in some of Londons most
affluent areas, is delighted with the response from locals and
reckons shes made the right decision to open up in Mt Albert.

Check out The Little Flower Shop on 822 New North Rd, Mt Albert.

Melissa said: Since opening up in December it has re-ignited a whole new passion for providing quality, beautiful fresh
blooms and a friendly, helpful service.
The Little Flower Shop follows in the footsteps of other new-comers in the area like Good Thing and Retro Addiction which
opened last year much to the delight of the locals. These quirky, independent shops go a long way in helping change the
landscape of Mt Alberts High Street and offer locals something different right on their doorsteps.
Having lived in the area for fifteen years its great to be part of a growing and vibrant community. With new shops opening
all the time and a supportive community behind us I definitely feel Im here to stay, Melissa said.

Easter Hunt
It was another great turn out for the annual
ADRE Easter Hunt on Sunday, 20th of March,
as hundreds of children gathered on top of
Mt Albert in the hunt for chocolate treats.
Now in its fifth year this event has become
very popular with the locals with more and
more signing up each year.
A wet start to the day didnt dampen the
spirits of the youngsters as scores of them
scrambled in search of the hidden chocolate
scattered around the field.
The giant Easter bunny along with Tomtom
the Clown was a huge success with the
revellers and the queues for the photo
booth proved it was a huge hit.
Fresh coffee was a welcome addition for the
parents as well as the complementary Hot
Cross Buns that were on offer.
