Marlou Mico Malabuyoc: An Autobiography

Marlou Mico Rabanal Malabuyoc was born November 19, 1994 at the school hospital of Lyceum
of the Philippines University Batangas in Batangas City. He is the youngest child of Crisostomo and
Ma. Luisa Malabuyoc and the brother of Kris Ma and Kristel Mae Malabuyoc. His family lived in a
subdivision near the city for five years after he was born. For reasons he was too young to understand,
they moved to Sto. Tomas, Batangas and lived with their grandparents house.
At a young age, he discovered his fondness in solving puzzles as well as playing games. He
entered Sto. Tomas North Central School in 2001 for his elementary studies and there, he discovered his
interest in mathematics. He became the schools representative in different mathematics quiz contests
from the 2nd grade until his 6th grade. Along with his academic progress, he joined the schools rondalla
string band on his 4th grade where he played the guitar for two years and the double bass for his last year.
Their band played in different locations and events like Taal, Batangas and Intramuros, Manila. He
graduated elementary school as the class valedictorian in 2007.
Over the summer before he enters high school, he attended a three-day in-house training for
young mathematicians hosted by the Mathematics Trainers Guild in Subic, Zambales. It was also a
selection process where they will choose the students that will go for further training in Manila and will
represent the country in international mathematics competitions. He was cleared and ready to go for
further training but his parents decided that he should give it up for the meantime since he was too young
to stay in Manila alone and board an apartment.
For his secondary education, he was a scholar at First Asia Institute of Technology and
Humanities (FAITH), a private school in Tanauan City, Batangas which is famous during those years
because of their robotics program. His fondness in mathematics never faded and from his 1 st year to 4th
year, along with Ms. Lara Mae Lumbres and Ms. Jamil Carandang they formed a team that represented
the school and win in different math competitions.
Nevertheless, his interest in other things also grew. He joined different school clubs every year
but, the club he wanted to join the most is the robotics team of the school which competes nationally and
internationally. Coming from a public elementary school where there was no computer subject, he still
tried applying for membership on his 1 st year with his limited knowledge. He was accepted but, only as a
substitute member of the team. That didnt matter for him as he used it as a learning experience so that he
may apply again for the next years. He succeeded and became a regular member on his 3 rd year and team
captain during his last year in high school.
During the first three years of his secondary education, he was ranked as the third student with
the highest average of grades but, for his last year in high school; he was too involved in many school

activities that he was almost never inside their classroom that might have caused him slipping by one
spot. He graduated as the 2nd honorable mention of their batch in 2011.
As he pursue for greater knowledge and successfully passing the UPCAT, he entered the
University of the Philippines Los Baos in 2011 and is now on his 5th year taking Bachelor of Science in
Civil Engineering. He had his fair share of different experiences in college. There was a semester that he
took all of his final exams in one day which are Physics 81, Math 38, and Chem 15. He received grades
from 1.0 up to 3.0 and sadly, he also received a grade of 5.0 in one of his subjects. Nevertheless, he
learned to never give up in academics with his motto of its not over until its over. There was a
semester where he even had a major subject that he needed a perfect score to pass the course and he
achieved it.
Outside of his college academic load, he is an active member of the University of the Philippines
Civil Engineering Society (UPCES), a Civil Engineering - based organization in UPLB which hosts two
large events per academic year; one of them is the Colloquia, a region wide engineering seminar and the
other is the AutoMathic, a nationwide inter-collegiate mathematics quiz contest.
He acquired new hobbies like photography and going to museums. He is now boarding a privateowned dormitory inside the university.
