ASSIGNMENT
DECEMBER 2013
SUBJECT: DESIGN 1 BASIC SKILLS
SUBJECT CODE: EME3113

TASK
1. You will work in groups of five students to design a portable folding trolley.
Trolley is a type of small cart for carrying things etc. The portable folding trolley that
you will design can carry various size of stuffs with weight up to 50 kg. Moreover, it
can be used in the office, home, airport and open area.
2. Identify its customer requirements
Identify it by doing small survey to some people (your friends or your family) to
know what their expectation to the product.
Make a list of customer requirements as result of your survey.
3. Generate design specification
A design is successful if it can fulfill all the customer requirements. You need to know
whether your design has fulfilled all the customer requirements or not by defining
design specifications. Specification is a target to measure requirement achievement or
design performance. Create a list of specification as your designs targets.
4. Generate functional decomposition.
A products overall function may be divided into a hierarchical set of sub-functions
by decomposition. It will transform the overall complexity of the product into
functional units that have lower complexity.
5. Generate solutions for each sub-function that you get from functional decomposition.
Combine them to generate as many as possible design concept by creating sketches of
the design.
6. Create evaluation table to evaluate the concepts and choose the best design concept.
7. Convert the concept to a physical form.
Conduct engineering analysis or calculation to get final components size, shape and
materials.
8. Draw preliminary engineering drawing.
9. Build the prototype.
10. Write a project report that contains:
a) Problem statement
b) Project Objective
c) Customer requirements
d) Design Specifications
e) Functional decomposition
f) Concepts generation
g) Concept selection
h) Detail engineering analysis and calculation
i) Engineering Drawing

j) Project problems, suggestions and conclusion.

Note:
Student must attend all the project classes. Every single absence without any
notification causes 10% deduction from the overall projects marks.
Each group must be ready for their work progress presentation, otherwise will get
10% marks deduction from the overall projects marks.

PROJECT MARKING SCHEME

Component 1 [25%]
Each group must build the project model from available material and work shop
machines. At the end of the course the group must demonstrate the completed project
model and its function ability via a small scale simulated test.

Component 2 [75%]
Each group is required to submit a project report
The report shall consist of the following content:3

a. Problem statement and problem objective.

[7.5 marks]

b. Customer Requirements and Design Specification.

[15 marks]

c. Functional decomposition

[7.5 marks]

d. Concept generation. At least four (4) concept design is illustrated by appropriate

sketch which are fully annotated together with a brief description of the key principles
of each concept.
