I have found every topic introduced, each discussion in groups and even some

comments made by my fellow students very interesting and I feel that I have learnt
some invaluable concepts throughout the duration of the course, and feel I can take
forward in my career both at school and in the workplace.
The one topic to make more of an influence on myself than other topics that were
discussed in class is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
There are a few reasons why I found the topic educational, influential, interesting and
memorable. Firstly, I was not aware how much of an impact the Enron scandal had on
its various stakeholders, and what impact the decisions made by corporations can
have on those associated with the organization and scandal itself. Without watching
the video in class, I would never have known the true impact the decisions made by
Kenneth Lay and his team had on those around them.
Secondly, after watching the video, listening to the class exchanges on the subject
and taking part in the online discussion, really did help me gain a greater
understanding of the subject.
After the class discussions, I began to appreciate the value and importance of CSR
and was influenced by the concept to an extent that I believe that it help lay the
foundations for my media assignment. Not my chosen scandal itself, but what CSR
really stands for, how CSR played a significant role in how my chosen scandal
unfolded.
In gaining a greater understanding of the subject and during completing my
assignment, it was clearly evident that there is the need, along with the increasing
demand for organizations to conduct themselves in a responsible and ethical manner
when carrying out their business decisions.
Initially, I viewed CSR as just an advertisement tool that companies use to enhance
their reputation by "looking good" in the eye of the public, but I was very, very
wrong.

In fact, I also found the concept influential due to the significant role
CSR has played in reducing issues such as substandard products, the
abuse of human rights especially for my assignment, environmental

pollution, and labour related issues such as child labour.

The concept of CSR was also educational to me since I became
enlightened that CSR is an initiative and an accountability that
organizations should engage in without expecting returns from the
investments they make on CSR programs. Initially, I viewed CSR as just
an advertisement tool that companies use to enhance their reputation.
In conclusion, I strongly believe organizations social responsibility are

significantly fundamental business ethic field which also contribute to

organizational successes. As learnt in class, it is a core moral value
that organizations must pledge to enhance more community
partnership and stewardship among its competitors.
Nonetheless, I learnt in this class that Corporate Social
Responsibility adds value, contribute to community development and
enlightening the workforce. Therefore, organizations that participate
in CSR are not only creating good reputations for themselves, giving
back to the society, differentiating themselves from its competitors,
but also creating good relationships with its employees and society
and thereby increasing customer retention, engaging in corporate
citizenship and more importantly business sustainability.
