The course consists of:

Three assignments: Assignment #1, #2 and #3. Answers to each assignment
must be written clearly. Answers should be sent by registered post to the course
coordinator-ECX3232 or should be placed in the relevant box provided in block
12 of the Colombo regional centre on or before due date. Since the Model
answers to the assignments are posted to the students and are uploaded to the
virtual class room soon after the assignment due date, Late submission of the
assignments will not be accepted under any circumstances. Zero marks will be
given for copying assignments.
Past assignments, model answers, and lesson materials are available on the
Open University website/Moodle Environment/Engineering technology/Electrical
& Computer Engineering section/ ECX-3232 Electrical power for your easy
reference.
Three laboratory classes: You are strictly advised to attend to the laboratory
classes on the dates specified in the activity diary. Separate lab reports for each
of the lab works should be submitted after the lab classes and marks will be
assigned upon submission of the lab reports only. Lab works are compulsory
and you should get a minimum average mark of 40% for you to obtain eligibility in
addition to other marks.
If you are unable to attend to a laboratory class due to an unavoidable
reason on the specified date as mentioned on the activity diary, you should
inform it to the course coordinator or to the demonstrator in-charge of the
lab classes in advance so that the proper arrangements could be made in
timely manner. However, you should be able to produce a valid certified
document for the reason for your absence.
Continuous Assessment Test (CAT): There will be two CAT on the dates
specified in the activity diary and both the tests are open book type.
Day schools: There will be three-day schools. These day schools will be held
on the dates specified in the activity diary. Although the day schools are not
compulsory, you are advised to attend to these day schools. User name and the
password for virtual classes will be announced on the first day school.
Final Examination: This will be closed book type. The question paper will be of
duration 3 hours
Eligibility Criteria: Average of the best seven out of eight activities 40%
Average [Lab work] 40%

Draw the daily load curve and determine the load factor of above consumer.
What is the maximum demand?
What is the applicable tariff rate for this consumer?
Determine the monthly electricity bill of this consumer.
Calculate the size of the capacitance/phase need to be installed between 06001300 hrs to improve the power factor to be unity. Capacitors are delta connected.

Note: A month consist of 30 days

Q2
a. What is an auto-transformer? State its merits and demerits over a two- winding
transformer.
b. What are the tests carried out to determine transformer copper and core losses?
c. A 150 kVA, 2400/240 V transformer has following equivalent circuit parameters referred
to its HV side.
R1=0.2

R2=0.002

Rc=10 k

Xm=1.6 k

X1=0.45

X2=0.0045

i. Calculate the open circuit current, power and power factor when LV side is excited
at rated voltage
ii. Determine the voltage at which the HV should be excited to conduct a short circuit
test with full load current flowing. What is the input power and its power factor?
d. A 500 kVA transformer has an efficiency of 95% at full load at unity power factor and it
has efficiency of 96% at 60% of full load at 0.9 power factor
i. Separate out the losses of the transformer.
ii. Determine the efficiency of transformer at 75% of full load.

Q3
a. Briefly explain electricity distribution system of Sri Lanka.
b. A 50 Hz, single phase transmission line has several loads 3 km away from the substation
as shown in figure Q3. The transmission line has impedance of 1+j5 per km. In order to
maintain 230 V at the load end ,Calculate,
i. Current in the transmission line
ii. Substation voltage
iii. Active and reactive power dissipated in the line
iv. Active and reactive power delivered by substation

factor.
b. A 2200/220 V, 50 Hz single-phase transformer has exciting current ( I e ) of 0.6A and core
loss of 361 W, when its primary is energized at rated voltage. Calculate the two
components of exciting current.
c. If the transformer of part b) supplies a load current of 60 A at 0.8 power factor lagging on
its secondary side, then calculate the primary current and its power factor. (Ignore the
leakage impedance drop)
