Enthusiastic Learning
Woodleigh offers a unique child centred approach which
recognises the needs, interests, aspirations and achievement of
every pupil.

Pre Prep pupils experience a broad and balanced curriculum


based on the National Curriculum but providing opportunities to
expand and explore taking into account the child’s interests.

In years 3-6 pupils are gradually introduced to subject based


classes taught by specialists. English, Maths, Science, ICT,
History, Geography, French, Art, CDT, PE, Music, PSHE and
Latin comprise the curriculum.

During years 7&8 pupils are prepared for Common Entrance,


Entrance exams and Scholarship exams for 13+ entry into senior
schools.

The starting point
Woodleigh’s Pre-Prep department caters for children aged
3-7 and shares all the facilities of the main school. A team of
enthusiastic teachers and bright attractive classrooms is
combined with small classes and an excellent staff to pupil
ratio.

and Literacy and enjoy a wealth of creative subjects and

A home from home
Dormitories are bright, warm and friendly and children are
grouped according to age.

The pastoral care team is led by the Headmaster, two matrons


and form tutors. Close contact is kept with parents and all pupils
have email and phone access and opportunities to write home.

A wide ranging programme of activities and excursions are


organised for boarders each weekend. Shopping trips, seaside
visits, barbeques, mountain biking, cricket nets, swimming and
cinema trips are just some of the possibilities.

Experience of a lifetime
Woodleigh has many decades of experience providing
education for overseas students. Students from Hong Kong,
Italy, Nigeria, United States, New Zealand, South Korea,
Germany and many more countries have enjoyed a unique and
tailored education.

A well qualified TEFL teacher and enthusiastic staff ensure a


smooth immersion into life at Woodleigh.

Travel arrangements, including visas, are handled by the


school office and all travel to and from airports is escorted.

Nothing is impossible
The Learning Support department gives specialised one to one
support for the development of literacy and numeracy skills of
children who would otherwise have difficulty in accessing the
curriculum.

Care is taken to avoid withdrawal from key and favourite


subjects and emphasis is placed on the importance of happiness
and self-esteem, with a belief that all children can realise their
potential with support and a willingness to work hard.

The coordinator holds the Hornsby International Dyslexia


Centre Diploma (merit) in the teaching of students with specific
learning difficulties. Woodleigh is a member of CReSTeD.

Capturing the moment
Drama builds confidence and promotes teamwork. All pupils at all
ages are regularly involved in drama, either on stage or backstage.

Pupils from Nursery to Year 2 rehearse and perform a Christmas


play; pupils in years 3 to 5 rehearse and perform a musical in the
Autumn Term, a cabaret in the spring term and year 8 perform a
play on founders’ day in the summer term.

Recent performances include: ‘Joseph and the Amazing


Technicolor Dreamcoat’, ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ and ‘The Blues
Brothers’. A House Play Festival takes place in the Spring Term.
In the recent past, plays have toured York, Hull and the Edinburgh
Fringe Festival.

Everyone can take part
Woodleigh is one of the only schools in the United Kingdom to
offer time-tabled sport on every school day.

Every child will have the opportunity to represent the school in a


sports team during their time at Woodleigh.

Rugby, Netball, Football, Hockey, Cricket, Rounders,


Athletics, Tennis, Swimming, Cross Country, Badminton,
and Triathlon are the main team games. Matches are arranged
almost every Wednesday and Saturday for all age groups.

Discovering talents
Every child has the opportunity to develop their musical
talents at Woodleigh.

Weekly music lessons lead to performances in stage musicals,


live cabarets, ensemble bands and singing events each term.

All children can experience a free taster instrumental lesson.


The choice of instruments is almost unlimited and tuition is
provided by experienced professional musicians. Many pupils
choose to take part in bands, ranging from the school brass
band to contemporary pop groups.

Outdoor adventures
Adventure is part of your child’s life at Woodleigh. Twice a
term, activity weekends offer residential packages including fun
days out dry-skiing, paint-balling, canoeing, quasar, and ropes
courses. There are also trips to cities, museums, imax cinemas,
football stadium tours, seaside visits and much more.

Each summer years 5-8 go camping for a week. Activities


include team building, rafting, caving, canoeing, climbing,
abseiling, water-skiing, fishing and survival skills.

During the holidays, activity weeks include archery, cycling,


tennis, swimming, horse riding, cricket, football, art, music,
crafts and off site excursions. There’s also an annual ski trip.

24 hour care
Your child’s welfare is paramount at Woodleigh, where
before and after school care is made easy. Care is included
from before 8 until late. Flexi-boarding is available to all
pupils from Year 3 upwards.

Breakfast, before school care, break time snacks, hot healthy


lunches, mid afternoon snacks, hot healthy teas, fun evening
activities and supervised homework are all included in the
fees. Short notice bookings for teas, evening activities and
homework are no problem.

The creative side
The children are taught to access their creativity through a
multitude of media including painting, print-making, textiles,
drawing and collage. They are encouraged to apply techniques
to many different projects including poster design, book
illustration and theatre design.
