Import a short (say five minutes or so) but already edited piece of video or an
animation into a video editing application. Study it carefully and choose 20 or 30
single frames which you feel will best convey the narrative or import of the whole
clip on their own. Produce these as (a) a storyboard, and/or (b) a time-based
animatic.

Introduction

For this project, I took a short animation title The Artists which takes about
3.02 minutes long. This animation was directed and animated by Sean Mullen in
year 2011. The artist was a story about two rival painters who failed to see the
bigger picture. Through the whole scenes, these two very rival painters was
eagerly competing each other by getting much bigger canvas from time to time
in order to paint a scenic view of sunset. In the end, they realized that they made
quite a pair by putting their views; and not forgetting their paintings in much
bigger picture.
This 3D animation in a nutshell is a very simple, compact and versatile as
well as it contains values and provides easy understanding. The characters that
have been developed by the designer were very nice and memorisable. Due to
this, I have decided to choose this short animation as my new target objective in
order to complete my task.

Objective

The objective of this project is to create storyboard and animatic storyboard of

the 3D animation, titled The Artists. Both storyboard and animatic definitely
must follow the duration time of the story. Even though this animation is simple,
the storyline however must not be understated as something simplistic as well.
This is due to the fact that the storyline is well made and thus reflecting
excellence in it. Audience were presented with silly fights of two artists who want
to draw the same scene of a view. Without they realize, their paintings are
interconnected and can be joint to form a much bigger painting.
In a meantime, a storyboard is a sequence of still images that tells a story,
like a comic strip. An animatic is a sort of sketch of a movie composed entirely of
still images within a time-based environment; each image is held for the duration
of the scene it represents in the final, full-motion and movie. Each still image
should capture the essence of a scene. The animatic will show the rhythm of the
edits that are proposed (or, in this case, have already been made) and the flow
of the whole movie.
Actually, a well-defined storyboard helps to ensure that everyone
understands the goals of the project and how the animation, video and audio
footage should work together. Even though, I need to do a reverse cycle of
animation; from a finish story then I should come up with the storyboard and
animatic. Selection of scene is very important to match with the storyline.
The difference between a storyboard and an animatic is that a storyboard
is static media wheresomething that might pin to the wall if it were created on
physical media. In general, animatics are animated storyboards. They are used
for various purposes depending on the medium which are being produced.
Animatic also need to follow thetime-based and plays for the full length of the
finished piece. User just, can sit back and relax while watching the animatic.

Methods

To finish this static storyboard and animatic, I have used a variation of methods.
After I chose an exact short story that I want, I need to break the animation video
into a still image. This step could help me choose a good picture to make a static
storyboard. Then, I decided to use Window Movie Maker application to convert
the video to a bundle series of the still images. Then, I got about 74 snapshots of
the video.
Then, I chose 30 snapshots of the images that contain message and every
scene or images have a hook up of each other. At this stage, I really need to
choose the best picture to tell the whole story. Thus, audience will not confuse
about my storyboard and the real story.
The next stage, I need to sketch back the chosen pictures selected into
frames. In this project, I used 13cm x 9cm frames size for my storyboard. After it
is finished, I then drew the storyboard. However, just for a random check up,
before I move to the next part, I have showed and asked two students, did they
understand the storyline of the sketches I made. Their responses are positive.
Thus, after they approved, I scanned all of the drawings. At this stage, Im ready
to animatic all the drawings.
Now, I imported all the scan images to computer. By using, Adobe Flash, I
did all the animatic. I do a few basic layering for each pictures such as organized
each picture and the put key frames to the main pose of the characters and be
certain that all the poses or movement of the characters have a hook up. This
will help client or audience to understand the story. For simple cut and edit
pictures, I used Adobe Photoshop application. While making the animatic
storyboard, I need to refer the real duration for each scene in order to match the
time-based of the real video.
After finished the static and animatic part, I did a simple test just to know
whether the audience understand what exactly the static and animatic
storyboard tell about. I have selected about 10 students (my client) whose never
watch The Artists short story. A few related questions were asked to those
students.

Finding

Finding in this task is very important to have a strong storyboard because

storyboarding can be useful way to show concepts or storyline quickly and
effectively to clients or audience rather than trying to explain a concept to them
by using the traditional old form of words. The sequential boxes show rough
sketches of what happens in each scene, with a short description to support the
visual. Therefore, it is important to keep the number of scenes to a minimum
because we want to explain the most important things in a sentence or two.

From the chart, shows that 60 per cent of respondent agreed that they are
understand the storyline from the animatic storyboard. Even though, the statistic
shows that the understand of animatic story compares to static storyboard are
decrease, but the data show the positive response.
Creating an animatic is basically giving a life to a static storyboard. Clients
would understand more of what the animation will look like and the story is. This
is because animatic has been used as the method post-storyboard to determine
the camera angle, the flow of animation and the timing. Animatic storyboard has
a way to convey motion that a traditional smooth flowing animation does not.
With the absence of many frames in between and using only important
key frames to suggest changes of movement, camera angle and timing,
animatics are more abstracted as compared to animation. Nowadays, animatics
are used for every day in advertising industry to test commercials. They are used
to preview scenes of live-action films before they are shot. In animation field,
animatics will be finding in the pre-production stages.
