MODAL VERBS
Define which are the modal verbs.
Definition: These are auxiliary verbs that do not work as a main verb, unlike
auxiliary verbs such as: be, do and have.
Modal verbs express: ability, possibility, necessity or other status.
Modal verbs exist only help this means (that can not be the main verb in a
sentence)
As complementary verbs that are not work without another word.
Keep in mind that the modal verbs do not conjugate, do not take time or
person and never change.

Let's see what are the modal verbs.

EXAMPLES AND STRUCTURE

With Can: You may request permission or ask for possibilities.


Affirmative structure: Sujeto+ can + verbo principal en infinitivo.
Structure denial: Sujeto + cannot (can't)+ verbo principal en infinitivo
siempre.
Question: Can + sujeto + verbo principal en infinitivo siempre+?
She can drive: ella puede conducir.

I can speak five languages: puedo hablar cinco idiomas

With Could: possibility or ability in the past.


Affirmative structure: Sujeto+ could + verbo principal en infinitivo
Structure denial: Sujeto + could+ not+ verbo principal en infinitivo

Joe could speak spanish when he was Young: Joe poda hablar espaol
cuando era joven.
I couldnt sleep last night: No pude dormir anoche.

With May: to indicate possibilities in the future and to give permission or


instructions.
Affirmative structure: Sujeto + may + "verbo principal en infinitivo".
Structure denial: Sujeto + may + not (mayn't)+ verbo en infinitivo

It may rain tomorrow: maana puede que llueva.


You may leave if you like: puede salir si quiere.

With Might: It indicates possibilities in the present or the future (May


synonymous)
Affirmative structure: sujeto+ might+ verbo principal en infinitivo.
Structure denial: sujeto+ might+ not (mightnt)+ verbo en infinitivo.
I might como home late this night: puede que yo llegue tarde a casa esta
noche.
With Will: to form the future also means time and will or determination.
Structure: Sujeto + will + "verbo principal en infinitivo"
Structure denial: Sujeto + won't+ verbo en infinitivo
Questions: Will + sujeto + verbo en infinitivo+?
I will help you: te ayudare.
We will learn English: Aprenderemos ingls.

With Shall: used for suggestions or instructions.


Affirmative structure: Sujeto + shall + "verbo principal en infinitivo"
Structure denial: Sujeto + shall+ not +verbo en infinitivo

Chris shall be happy to see you: Chris estar feliz de verte.


Shall l we meet at 10pm?: Quedamos a las 22h?)
With Should: It indicates obligation or recommendation.
affirmative structure: subject + should + "main infinitive"
Structure denial: Subject + Should + not (Should not) + infinitive.
You shouldnt work so hard: No debera trabajar tan duro.
Should we pay now?: Pagamos ahora?
With Ought to: Should synonymous.
Affirmative structure: Sujeto + ought + to + "verbo principal en infinitivo".
Structure denial: Sujeto + ought + not (oughtn't)+ verbo en infinitivo

She ought to quit smoking: Debera dejar de fumar.

You ought not to go to bed late: no deberas irte tarde a la cama.

With Must: It indicates an obligation, prohibition or requirement.


Affirmative structure: Sujeto + must + "verbo principal en infinitivo"
Structure denial: Sujeto + must + not (mustn't)+ verbo en infinitivo
You must not drink and drive: No puedes beber y conducir.

When must we meet you?: Cundo debemos quedar?


With Would: to declare a preference and to ask for something politely.
Structure questions: Would + sujeto + verbo en infinitivo+?
Affirmative structure: Sujeto + would + "verbo principal en infinitivo".
Sujeto + would + not (wouldn't)+ verbo en infinitivo.

Would you help me please?: Me ayudas por favor?


Would you like some coffee?: Le gustara un caf?
