concentration of organics.
Chlorination
the adding of chlorine to water or sewage for the purpose of disinfection or other biological or
chemical results.
Clarification
the clearing action that occurs during wastewater treatment when solids settle out.
Clarification is often aided by centrifugal action or chemically induced coagulation.
Clarifier
a tank in which solids settle to the bottom and are subsequently removed as sludge.
Coagulation
in water treatment, the use of chemicals to make suspended solids gather or group together
into small flocs.
Combined Sewer

system in large rain events. The benefit is that pollutants from storm drainage get treated,
Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO)
When a combined sewer system is overpowered by storm drainage and overflows.
Constructed Wetland
An artificially created wetland usually with a waterproof lining for wastewater purification.
Detention, flow rates, types of plants and other parameters are controlled to improve BOD,
SS and N removal. Typical riparian plants like cattails and reeds are used to provide bacteria
with an oxygenating root zone.

Flocculant
Same as flocculating agent, the catalyst substance that causes the chemical reaction with
TSS to form flocculent many times encapsulating the solids.
Flocculent
The "floc" or wooly mass of clusters that is formed in flocculation. Many times used
interchangeably with "flocculant" however truly refers to the floc mass and not the catalyst
flocculating agent.

Impervious
the quality or state of being impermeable; resisting penetration by water or plant roots.
Impervious ground cover like concrete and asphalt affects quantity and quality of runoff.
Industrial Ecology
Industrial Ecology (IE) focuses on combining perpetually desirable outcomes in environment,
economy and technology sustainably. The primary tenet is that all systems mimic nature and
are thus closed loop, continuous, circular. In wastewater treatment industrial ecology would
mean that all so called "waste" is re-input into the same or other process. For example,
biosolids as fertilizer can be considered a use of sludge consistent with industrial ecology.
Recycling wastewater into the treatment plant, manufacturing or other process is another
example.
Industrial Wastewater Treatment
Wastewater treatment for industries such as manufacturing, food processing, corrugators,
printing and so on. Paper and pulp mills' treatment of wastewater is an example of industrial
wastewater treatment. Municipal wastewater treatment would be an example not considered
to be industrial.
Influent
The untreated wastewater or raw sewage coming into a wastewater treatment plant.
Influent Screens
Sreens used to remove large inorganic solids from the wastestream.
Innovative and Alternative (I&A)
An EPA term for wastewater treatment systems that reuse all or part of the wastewater.

with differing chemical doses, mix speeds, and settling times to estimate the minimum or
ideal coagulant dose required to achieve certain water quality goals.
Liquid Solids Separation
The process of separating the liquids and solids in a given wastewater. Liquid/solids
separation comes in one of 3 processes:
1. If the solids sink (specific gravity greater than 1) use a clarifier
2. If the solids float (specific gravity less than 1) use a floatation unit (DAF)
3. If neither sink or float (specific gravity is 1) try using a screen (rotary or parabolic)
Mechanized Bar Screen located at the inlet of sewage tank remove bigger
solids from wastewater to prevent clogging

resin manufacturing. Low concentrations cause taste and odor problems in water; higher
concentrations can kill aquatic life and humans.
Phosphorous
a plant nutrient that can cause an overabundance of bacteria and algae when high amounts
are present, leading to a depletion of oxygen and fish kills. High levels of phosphorous in
water are usually caused by agricultural runoff or improperly operating wastewater treatment
plants. Also see nitrogen.

Tertiary Treatment
The use of filtration to remove microscopic particles from wastewater that has already been
treated to a Secondary Level. Anthracite coal is the filter medium used by the MWWD.
Toxic pollutant
those pollutants or combinations of pollutants, including disease-causing agents, which after
discharge and upon exposure, ingestion, inhalation or assimilation into any organism can, on
the basis of information available, cause death, disease, behavioral abnormalities, cancer,
genetic mutations, physiological malfunctions or physical deformation in such organism or
their offspring. The quantities and exposures necessary to cause these effects can vary
widely.
Treatability
How treatable a water sample is with a given substance. The "treatability" of Floccin is
very high with a wide array of wastewater types. The more treatable wastewater is, the
better, obviously. All wastewater is treatable, how easy it is varies. The treatability can be
tested using samples in a "jar test". A small water sample is taken and placed in a jar. Then
the flocculant or other treatment additive mixed in and the results observed. Treatability tests
are an important part of wastewater optimization.
Total Coliforms
include bacteria that are found in the soil, in water that has been influenced by surface water,
and in human or animal waste.
TSS - Total Suspended Solids
As the name implies, the total solid particles that are suspended (as opposed to dissolved) in
the wastewater. TSS must be filtered out, flocculated, digested and so on for removal in the
treatment of wastewater. Though not necessarily pollutants TSS is considered to be a
measure of pollutants in water by the EPA in the US.
Turbid
thick or opaque with matter in suspension. Rivers and lakes may become turbid after a
rainfall.
Turbidity
A measure of how clear water is in ntu, invisible to the average naked eye until readings in
excess of 100 are reached, typically determined by shining light through a sample placed in
a turbidimeter.

The operator has to avoid the manual mode. It is not the normal working.
It is used to drain off the sewage tank with the aim to realize a maintenance operation.
(Mechanical mixer, mechanized bar screen, pump).
Most of conditions are still operational (just see below), they have right on the manual running
mode of the pumps, because the operator must not saturates the sludge stabilization or one of
the settling tanks.
Be careful: as possible the sewage pumping must not working as the mechanized bar screen is
not running and the mechanical mixer too.
The light selector switch of the pump selected by the operator is on MANUAL position.
The select pump is working as long as the security level 92SEO004SN is recovered, so the red
selector switch light is lightning.
The low emergency level 92SEO004SN is a hardware security.
When the low emergency level 92SEO004SN is discovered, a fault is set and displayed on the
display unit. Sewage pumping is stopped. When the low emergency level 92SEO004SN is
once again recovered, the operator have to used the acknowledge fault push button to reset this
fault.
Each sewage transfer pump is stopped with:
- Its selector switch not in manual position,
- Fault #1 & #4 cabinet control emergency stop,
- Its tripped fault sewage pump #,
- Its thermometer probe motor fault sewage pump #,
- Fault #20 low emergency level sewage tank 92SEO004SN,
- Fault #52 Air blower #1 92SEO001ZV not running (and the rescue mode off),

AUTOMATICAL MODE
In the normal working, the selector switches of the 92SEO003PO & 92SEO004PO transfer
pumps are placed in AUTO position.
Those pumps are working one duty one standby. An automatic permutation of functioning of
pumps is made in accordance with a working time (" 1/3-2/3 " of total time).
The main pump as it is called will work 4h (that is to say 2/3 of total time defined at 6h
At the end of 4h, automatic permutation on the secondary pump which will work 2h (that is
to say 1/3 of time) and so one, and so forth.
When the both selector switches of the sewage transfer pumps are positioned on 0 , the
followed principle is initialized: none of selected pump as main pump and the time counters
1/3-2/3 are resetted.
As soon as a sewage transfer pump's selector switch is positioned on AUTO , the
associated pump becomes the main pump.
There is an automatic permutation to the secondary pump on the main pump unavailability.
The sewage transfer pumping is enabled as soon as the high level 92SEO006SN is recovered.
The main pump starts if there are no faults. The sewage pumping is disabled as soon as the
low level 92SEO005SN is discovered.
If the high emergency level 92SEO007SN is reached, a fault is set and displayed on the
display unit. So the secondary pump starts until the high level 92SEO006SN is discovered.
The low emergency level 92SEO004SN is a hardware security.
When the low emergency level 92SEO004SN is discovered, a fault is set and displayed on the
display unit. Sewage transfer pumping is stopped. When the low emergency level
92SEO004SN is once again recovered, the operator has to used the acknowledge fault push
button to reset this fault.
Mechanical mixer has to work for 300s before to start sewage pumping.
Like that, there will be no more sludge accumulation in the bottom of the tank and sewage
transfer pumps will be safety to work.
Each sewage transfer pump is stopped with:
- Its selector switch not in AUTO position,
- Fault #1 & #4 cabinet control emergency stop,
- Its tripped fault sewage pump #,
- Its thermometer probe motor fault sewage pump #,
- Fault #20 low emergency level sewage tank 92SEO004SN,

If the auto sludge extraction cycle on the both settling tanks is not finished at the end of the 24
hours, the last cycle and timers SETTLING TANKS SLUDGE EXTRACTION are
resetted, and a new cycle begin.
Notes:
With an emergency stop or a cabinet control power shutdown, the current values of timers and
counters just on top are not resetted.
During the sludge pumps are working, the operator may change the preset timer values from
the display unit. The system reacts immediately to this modification.

Biological treatment
The biological treatment in the fixed bed bioreactor 92SEO 004BA is the main treatment in
the waste water plant. The process consists of decomposing soluble organic compounds in the
waster water into carbon dioxide, nitrogen compounds and water.
This decomposition is principally done by a bacteria population in aerobic conditions.
The bacteria will use the organic matters for their development. They fix themselves as a
biofilm on the media modules of the fixed bed bioreactor. When the fixed bed bioreactor is
being continuously fed with wastewater which provides food, the development of the bacteria
population can be seen on the supports as the thickness of biofilm increases. They use the
organic compounds and the decomposition energy for microbial growth.
When it reaches some millimetres, part of the biofilm will automatically leave the support due
to the microscopic formation of gas in the most inner side of the slime. The vacant site is now
available for a new bacteria population. Thus, the biofilm thickness is not uniform in the
bioreactor, as some bacteria populations are younger than others.
In addition to food, the microorganisms need oxygen for their development. Oxygen is
supplied by means of an air blower 92SEO 001ZV and a network of diffusers in the bottom of
the fixed bed bioreactor. Air and thus oxygen is diffused as fine bubbles in the interstitial
water trough the media modules.
The supply of atmospheric oxygen is an important parameter in this process. In case of air
blower 92SEO 001ZV breakdown, the air network has been constructed so that, the one
normally dedicated to the stabilization tank, air blower 92SEO 002ZV, can be used for rescue.
Secondary settling
The secondary settling tank 92SEO 005BA receives by gravity, waters coming from the fixed
bed bioreactor 92SEO 004BA.
In the same way as the primary settling tank, suspended matters are removed in a static mode.
Heavy solids will settle down in the bottom part of the settling tank and the clear overflowing
waters are transferred by gravity to the U.V. sterilizer before discharge.
The settled matters in the bottom of the tank are periodically extracted and transferred to the
stabilization tank.
Final disinfection before discharge
Final disinfection is done by the UV sterilizer 92SEO 001SR. The sterilizer will kill germs in
the treated water before discharge to the Nile.
The flow rate and the total volume of water discharged are indicated by an electromagnetic
flow-meter 92SEO 001MD.
Samples may be taken by manual valves, before and after the UV sterilizer, to check its
efficiency. Treated water sample for analysis may be taken by the same valve after the UV
sterilizer. The treated water may be seen above the discharge tank 92SEO 008BA.

Sludge stabilization
This process is used for the decomposition of residual organic matters in the sludge.
The sludge stabilization tank 92SEO 006BA is fed in a discontinuous way with sludge
extracted from the bottom of the primary and secondary settling tanks.
The treatment is performed in aerobic conditions so that the micro organisms die by lack of
substrate; the remaining organic compounds are decomposed up to the mineral state. The
result of the treatment is the formation of carbon dioxide, nitrogen compounds as well as
"inert" solids which constitute stabilized sludge.
This is no overflowing water from this tank. As time passes on, the sludge level in the tank
rises up and when the level sensor 92SEO 010SN is recovered, an alarm is triggered, the
sludge has to be drained to a truck to be taken away.

Mechanical mixer 92SEO 001ZE will be working for 300s before sewage pumping starts, so
that sludge will not be accumulated in the bottom of the tank and sewage transfer pumps will
be safe to work.
Each sewage transfer pump is stopped with:
- Its selector switch not on AUTO position,
- Fault #1 & #4 cabinet control emergency stop,
- Its tripped fault sewage pump #,
- Its thermometer probe motor fault sewage pump #,
- Fault #20 low emergency level sewage tank 92SEO004SN,
- Fault #22 Tripped fault mechanized bar screen,
- Fault #29 mechanized bar screen 92 SEO 001 DG is not running,
- Fault #30 mechanical mixer 92 SEO 001 ZE is not running for 24 hours,
- Fault #52 Air blower #1 92 SEO 001 ZV not running,
- Fault #72 Output U.V sterilizer low flow,
- Fault #81 High level sludge stabilization for 20 hours.
- Fault #83 Air pressure compressor down for 24 hours.
- Fault #86 Sludge pumping off for 24 hours.
Manual mode
The operator has to avoid the manual mode. It is not the normal working.
It can be used to drain off the sewage tank when a maintenance operation is needed.
(Mechanical mixer, mechanized bar screen, pump).
Special care must be taken when using this mode. As much as possible the sewage pumps
must not work when the mechanized bar screen and the mechanical mixer are stopped.
On manual mode, the sewage pumps are enslaved only to security level 92SEO004SN.
However most of stop conditions used for automatic mode are still operational on the manual
mode (see below), as the operator must not saturate the sludge stabilization or one of the
settling tanks.
The light selector switch of the pump selected by the operator is on MANUAL position.
The selected pump is working as long as the security level 92SEO004SN is recovered, so the
red selector switch light is lighted.
The low emergency level 92SEO004SN is a hardware security.
When the low emergency level 92SEO004SN is discovered, a fault is set and displayed on the
display unit. Sewage pumping is stopped. When the low emergency level 92SEO004SN is
once again recovered, the operator has to use the acknowledge fault push button to reset this
fault.
Each sewage transfer pump is stopped with:
- Its selector switch not on manual position,
- Fault #1 & #4 cabinet control emergency stop,
- Its tripped fault sewage pump #,
- Its thermometer probe motor fault sewage pump #,
- Fault #20 low emergency level sewage tank 92SEO004SN,

The auto sludge extraction cycle begins with the primary settling tank.
The pneumatic valve 92SEO059VE opens, and a few seconds later the selected sludge pump
starts and works as long as the SETTLING TANK SLUDGE EXTRACTION TIMERS is
running. The red selector switch light of the selected pump is lighted. (92SEO007CL or
92SEO008CL)
When the primary SETTLING TANK SLUDGE EXTRACTION TIMERS is ended, the
primary settling tank auto extraction is stopped, a counter is increased (PRIMARY
SETTLING TANK SLUDGE EXTRACT.REALIZED), and it goes on to the secondary
settling tank.
The pneumatic valve 92SEO059VE closes, and the pneumatic valve 92SEO058VE opens.
During this operation, the sludge pumps are stopped. The sludge pumping restarts a few
seconds after the pneumatic valve 92SEO058VE has open.
When the secondary SETTLING TANK SLUDGE EXTRACTION TIMERS is ended, the
secondary settling tank auto extraction is stopped, a counter is increased (SECONDARY
SETTLING TANK SLUDGE EXTRACT.REALIZED), and the cycle is finished until the end
of the 24 hours running.
The pneumatic valves 92SEO058VE & 92SEO059VE are closed, and the sludge pumps are
stopped.
If the auto sludge extraction cycle on both settling tanks has not finished at the end of the 24
hours, the last cycle and timers SETTLING TANKS SLUDGE EXTRACTION are reset,
and a new cycle begins.
Stopping sludge extraction:
With an emergency stop or a cabinet control power shutdown, the current values of timers and
counters just on top are not reset.
When the sludge pumps are working, the operator may change the preset timer values from the
display unit. The system reacts immediately to this modification.
The primary and secondary settling tanks are both equipped with low level sensors named
92SEO008SN & 92SEO009SN respectively. When they are discovered, the alarms #40 or #60
are set and displayed on the display unit.
Alarm #40 stops the primary settling tank sludge extraction, and the cycle goes on to the other
one.
Alarm #60 stops the secondary settling tank sludge extraction. A new cycle will begin when
the 24 hours will be down.
The sludge stabilization tank is equipped with a high level named 92SEO010SN.
The alarm #80 is set and displayed on the display unit when the level is reached.
When alarm #80 occurs, the auto cycle extraction mode is deactivated and sludge extraction
from the settling tanks is stopped (sludge pumps stopped and pneumatic valves 92SEO058VE
&92SEO059VE closed).

7.3. Using air blower 92SEO 002ZV in rescue mode for biological oxygenation
7.3.1. Introduction
The waste water plant is equipped with 2 air blowers:
- air blower 92SEO 001ZV is normally dedicated to the fixed bed bioreactor,
- air blower 92SEO 002ZV is normally dedicated to the stabilization tank.
In normal working, the two air blowers run with their switch on AUTO position.
The main treatment process in this plant takes place in the fixed bed bioreactor. This is a
biological aerobic treatment. In order that the microorganisms may live, grow and survive,
oxygen must always be supplied to the bioreactor.
So, in case of air blower 92SEO 001ZV breakdown or on a voluntary stop for maintenance for
example, air blower 92SEO 002ZV must be used to supply the fixed bed bioreactor with
oxygen. The stabilization tank 92SEO 006 BA can be left temporarily without air diffusion.
7.3.2. Rescue mode procedure
-
Make sure that the correct manual valves are open, and then validate this mode by the blue
push button.
One of the sewage transfer pumps automatically restarts.
Alarm #"53_Rescue mode " is set and can be seen blinking on the display unit.
Check that air diffusion is being performed correctly in the fixed bed bioreactor.
Proceed to any repair or maintenance work on air blower #1 92SEO 001ZV and return to
normal working as described below.

6/ Put one of the sludge pumps, #1 92SEO 005PO or #2 92SEO 006PO switch, on "AUTO"
position.
Only one sludge pump is allowed to work.
Should the operator place both sludge pumps switches on AUTO position, only the first
one put on this position will work.
Should he place both on MANUAL positions, none will work.
Should he place one on AUTO and the other on MANUAL, only the one on AUTO
position will work.
7/ When the green indicator light "AUTO CURRENT SLUDGE MODE" lights on, validate
your choice by the blue push button "SLUDGE MODE VALIDATION"
The sludge draining will now be done in a cyclic mode and according to the time values
set on the display unit.

The operator has to push on the "ENTER" key on the display unit, the fault message stays
lighted but now in a fixed position.
The operator then pushes on the "Acknowledge fault" yellow push button: the yellow
beacon stays lighted but now in a fixed position.
The message and the yellow beacon stay lighted as long as the fault is present.
When the fault that has triggered the alarm disappears (fault correction done), the message on the
display unit disappears and the yellow beacon light is off.
The associated actuator in the plant can restart without other action on the part of the operator.
8.1.2. Fault reset by acknowledge push button
The fault message on the display unit and the yellow beacon are blinking.
-
The operator has to push on the "ENTER" key on the display unit, the fault message stays
lighted but now in a fixed position.
The operator then pushes on the "Acknowledge fault" yellow push button: the yellow
beacon stays lighted but now in a fixed position.
The message and the yellow beacon stay lighted as long as the fault is present.
When the fault that has triggered the alarm disappears (fault correction done), once again the operator
has to push on the "Acknowledge fault" yellow push button.
Only then will the associated actuator in the plant restart; the message on the display unit disappears
and the yellow beacon light goes off.
8.1.3. Fault display
