JOB PURPOSE
Work collectively to develop/revise standards, tools and methodologies to help
develop and monitor the organisational health, growth and aspects of accountability
of Amnesty International entities. Facilitate peer learning and co-ordinated working
among colleagues in dispersed team that is based around the world. Promote
learning experiences and sharing as part of organizational development and growth
of national entities. Help to organise global level capacity building initiatives.
DEPARTMENT PURPOSE
The International Mobilization Program (IMP) supports national entities (Amnesty
Internationals national branches that are locally governed and managed) and
strengthens their organizational health, growth capacity, activism and
accountability. It enables the Amnesty International movement to increase diversity
and grow its support-base by facilitating professional services to enhance their
capacities and competencies.
AIIS PURPOSE
The International Secretariat (IS), which operates from a number of sites around the
world, gathers and communicates accurate and action-oriented human rights
information globally. We campaign for meaningful human rights change; enable
effective human rights activism and work to persuade governments and other actors
to uphold universal human rights standards. We provide strategic leadership,
support and advice to the Amnesty International movement globally, fostering
Amnesty Internationals contribution, presence and public accountability
throughout the world.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide support in identifying, updating, developing and promoting
appropriate tools and guidelines for organisational development and growth
of AI entities, in close collaboration with the Regional Capacity Building

Coordinators, to strengthen national organizational governance,


management systems and processes to promote growth in people, income,
activism and diversity.
Keep the IMP team up to date on developments in organizational
development theory and practice.
Help in organising global level capacity building initiatives for national
entities.
Participate in and contribute to the wider growth and mobilization
discussions and development of strategies and plans of the movement in
order to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the movement,
including by writing of high-level reports and briefings.
Develop and maintain learning systems and co-ordinate its use among the
IMP distributed team to ensure maximum and effective use of experiences,
learning and other capacity building resources within the IMP and within
the Office of the Secretary General as appropriate, in order to deliver
capacity interventions in the areas of organisational development and
growth. Support learning and exchange between AI entities through various
channels of interaction, online as well as offline.
Compile success stories, impact stories, and learning documents for
different audiences, including the International Board, Secretary General
and AI Entities. Compile other reports as necessary.
Develop and maintain relationships with teams across the International
Secretariat and facilitate partnership and knowledge exchange between IMP
staff in all locations.
Support the induction of regional Capacity Building Coordinators to their
role and in using tools developed for the capacity building of AI entities.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE IN THIS JOB?


Capacity building tools and approaches for the organizational development
and growth of AI entities are effectively scoped and developed in
consultation with Regional Capacity Building Coordinators and they are
able to effectively use the new tools developed.
Team and program learning for capacity building effectively promoted.
Team members feel connected to each other and learning from each others
experience.
Different types of information needs are met and high quality reports and
briefings produced.
Knowledge and understanding of the existing capacity building resources in
the movement remains in the International Mobilisation Program and their
appropriate use happens for the capacity building of AI entities to support
their growth.
AI entities receive high quality and sustainable capacity building support
through regional Capacity Building Coordinators.
Capacity building projects (mainly global) led by this post holder are
delivered to high quality standards and are able to achieve their goals.
Capacity Building resources including good practice material are developed,
made available to and utilized by AI entities.
Requests for advice on capacity building projects and related matters are

handled in a timely and effective manner.


SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Knowledge and experience of organisational development
Able to demonstrate previous experience in organizational development and
capacity building theory and good practice in multinational settings.
Being sensitive to the needs, opportunities and constraints of a worldwide
membership organization.
Ability to demonstrate previous knowledge of and experience in governance
(particularly around governing boards and operational management), leadership
development, supporter engagement and/or monitoring & evaluation desirable
Practical experience in capacity building through learning and sharing
Proven experience of capacity building through gathering learning and promoting
sharing in the context of organisational development and growth related initiatives
Strong facilitation skills , face to face and online.
Capacity needs assessment, tools development and planning
Able to work with other team members to identify emerging capacity building
needs and to coordinate the development of new tools and methodologies for
organisational development and growth related capacity building of sections and
structures (or revising existing tools).
Able to set priorities, plan and meet strategic objectives.
Communication, political judgment & cultural sensitivity
Excellent verbal and written communications.
Able to process information and produce high quality reports to use at the senior
levels of the organisation
Conveys complex information clearly and succinctly, including by long-distance
telephone calls and email to a diverse audiences.
Fluent written and spoken English, knowledge of French, Spanish or Arabic an
advantage.
Able to work with individuals from a variety of cultures and backgrounds.
Able to identify the necessary information, and alternative courses of action and
pros and cons of each action before making a decision.
Experience of working effectively within a team whose members are based in
different locations desirable.
Personal organization and flexibility
Works well under pressure, maintaining both a high level of accuracy and output.
Able to understand and accept changes in priorities, work on new priorities by
adjusting other priorities accordingly.
Able to work in an atmosphere of major organisational change which may also
change some aspects of this role.
