My professional career has been very rewarding so far.

I have been able to gain some

very useful vital industry experience as a Cchemical Eengineer. A path which I have excelled in
both academically by graduating with honors and being a member of the esteemed Tau Bbeta Ppi
engineering honors society, and professionally by managing a critical engineering project which
has earned me global recognition within my company.
One of my most rewarding experiences and greatest professional achievement was in
2012 when I interned with ALCOA. I was assigned a project, which required me to define the
operating criteria for a newly built equipment at the plant. My project was focused on developing
an equipment called the Bioreactor. The purpose of this equipment was which is used to remove
the major unwanted impurity, Oxalate, that would hinder from our product to enableALCOAs
ALCOA production ofe high quality specification Alumina. The implementation of this project
was very important to the plant I worked at, as this was the second bioreactor built globally in at
an ALCOA refinery.
My mentor at that time, who had a metallurgy background, had to leave for Spain on a
business trip, leaving me to handle a project no one else in our localthe plant had any knowledge
about. One of the biggest challenges I faced was not having my mentor available at the time to
give me a better foundation of what the project was about. Before he left for spain, he had given
me a process flow diagram which he was going to explain to me in detail as soon he got back
from spainhe hoped we would review in detail on return. Unfortunately, he fell ill during his trip
and was unable to return back to work as planned. I remember the first problem I encountered
with the equipment, at first I was scared because I had never been given such an enormous
responsibility before and the worse still, part was everyone was looking up to me to have provide

a solution. But thenAt that moment, I remembered my favorite quote from Voltaire ,Voltaire,
with great power comes great responsibility, , and I started utilizing the various resources
available to me such as the Engineers at AustrailiaAustralia who could give me a solid
understanding on what the equipment was designed to do and the senior engineers at my plant
who could guide me on how to go about defining the criteria. I also had to learn how to
effectively communicate and teach the operations team in order to guarantee the success of this
project because they were the pilot of the equipment.Iequipment. I had to get them to trust my
recommendations and this made our work as a team more effective . As my internship
progressed, the senior engineers and operations team were very impressed with how I handled
the challenge. Even though I was an intern with no prior experience in the task assigned to me, I
assumed the responsibility of a full time engineer.
The work I did as an intern was awarded the ALCOA best practice community sharing
awards, and part of my work was used during the implementation of a bioreactor at the ALCOA
refinery in Australia.
