INTRODUCTION
(Title, Executive Summary, Area of Study, Background Study,
Need for Thermochromic garments, Advantages)

1. INTRODUCTION
Thermochromic dyes and pigments change shade reversibly with a
relatively small change in temperature. Thermo- chromic colorants have
achieved particular importance in non-textile applications such as plastic
strip thermometers, medical thermography, food packaging and nondestructive testing of engineered articles and electronic circuitry, but their
use in textile systems appears to be far less wide- spread.
1.1 Title:
To develop thermo-chromic denim garments.
1.2 Area of Study:
Study of thermochromic dyes and liquid crystals, which react chemically
on denim developing it into thermo chromic denim. Application of
thermochromic dyes on denim and techniques of garment construction.
1.3 Background Study:
Thermochromism can be defined as the reversible change in the color of a
compound with temperature.
The word "thermochromic" looks a little intimidating at first, but the
concept is pretty simple. Thermo comes from the Greek word "thermos,"
which means warm or hot. Chromic comes from "Chroma," meaning color.
A thermochromic substance changes color as it changes temperature. In
fabrics, a special dye acts as the thermochromic agent.
An exciting new era is opening in the field of textile materials due to
development of innovative yarns, fabrics, functional finishes and
coloration systems. These open a whole new world of opportunities and
challenges to the user. Thermochromic and photochromic materials
occupy a unique place as they are exciting materials, not yet fully
explored on textiles and come with associated problems regarding
application on textile substrates. Photochromic/thermochromic colorants
occupy a niche position within the coloration industry, the majority of
applications in the textile sector limited to fashion, leisure and sports
garments.
1.4 Need For Thermochromic Garments:
There is no such brand in India creating thermochromic denim garments.

Naked and Famous is a Canada based denim company that works

exclusively with unique and rare denims from Japan. They strive to keep
all of their jean styles raw and simple, for all of those denim purists out
there. They are also very interested in creating new and one of a kind
denim blends like cashmere denim, camel hair denim and now a denim
that changes color with heat i.e. thermochromic denim for men.
1.5 Advantages:
1. Smart garment thermochromic dyes can be used on textiles for
creative fashion design or novelty effects such as camouflage
design. They also offer significant potential for aesthetic and
functional textile design in the area of smart materials, which are
designed to interact in a variety of ways with their environment.
2. Military use- One of the main reasons for the rapid development of
intelligent textiles is the important investment made by the military
industry. This is because they are used in different projects such as
extreme winter condition jackets or uniforms that change color so as
to improve camouflage effects.

3. Best Value- The incorporation of thermochromic dyes into textiles can

deniminonegarment.
4. Interactive garments- These garments can easily detect body
temperature rising and change its color giving an indication that a
person may be suffering from health issues like fever etc. These
garments can be very useful for kids and infants.
5. Prevention

from duplicity- Thermochromic pigment coated

textiles can be used for number of applications like on garment to
create novel products and promotional items like T-shirts, on fabrics
and garments to print company logo / brand name to prevent
duplication, on garments.

1.6 Research Objectives

1.6.1 Primary Objectives:
To construct thermochromic denim garment.
1.6.2 Secondary Objectives:
1. To determine whether customers prefer thermochromic garments.

2. To study how to apply construction techniques on the garment

designs, and application of thermochromic dyes on fabric.
3. To study what types of variability are possible to apply on thermo
chromic garments?
Key Terms
Thermochromic, Thermochromic dyes, Thermochromic liquid crystals

2.1. Global Apparel Industry

The apparel industry is of great importance to the economy in terms of trade, employment,
investment and revenue all over the world. This particular industry has short product life
cycles, vast product differentiation and is characterized by great pace of demand change
coupled with rather long and inflexible supply processes.
