Rev. v1.0

Overview

Running the Azimuth MIMO Range ACE

Benchmark Test
Overview
From the CE guide... The ACE is a multi-path MIMO channel emulator designed for 802.11 applications.
It is designed to work with the emerging 802.11n standard as well the 802.11a, b and g standards. The ACE
can emulate multiple antenna channel models in indoor MIMO WLANs defined by the 802.11n High
Throughput Task Group (TGn) in the document IEEE P802.11 Wireless LANs, TGn Channel Models (May
10, 2004).1
The ACE is designed to be an easy-to-use test system. The front panel has two groups of four RF ports.
These ports are bi-directional and allow for direct connection to 802.11 devices. The emulator can be
configured to operate on any combination of ports supporting 1x1 SISO up to 4x4 MIMO. The ACE can be
configured to operate with TGn channel models A-F, with user defined variables such as antenna spacing
and line-of-sight components. In addition, a variable attenuator is provided to allow for virtually
positioning the distance or path loss between the connected devices.
The ACE is designed to be used as a system with the Azimuth N-Series WLAN Test Platform. Command
and control of the ACE is performed using the Azimuth DIRECTOR.

Theory of Operation
MIMO Range ACE measures the device throughput as a function of range. Range is controlled by virtually
positioning the STAUT relative to the APUT by means of the Azimuth Smart Motion attenuators. This flat
channel attenuation (or fading of the signal) provides a simulated range between the devices.
Throughput in an 802.11 system is determined by the transmit data rate of the transmit station and the
receiver performance of the receiving station. As the attenuation between the devices is increased, the
signal strength at the receiver decreases. Eventually the signal reaches a point where it can no longer be
received without error. When this occurs, the receiving DUT will not send an acknowledgement (ACK) in
response to the frame it received. The transmitting station, in response to no receipt of ACK, determines if
it must decrease the transmit rate. Decreasing the transmit rate decreases the modulation used by the
transmitter. The lower modulation rate results in a signal that requires less overall signal-to-noise ratio
(SNR) at the receiver to be decoded properly. Thus, the receiver is able to properly decode the signal over
an extended further decrease in signal strength. The test continues increasing the attenuation until the
station is disassociated.

1.The ACE is based on a MatLab implementation of the TGn channel models, the work of which was supported by
European Union IST Research Project IST-2000-30148 I-METRA (Multi Element Transmit and Receive Antennas).
See A Stochastic MIMO Radio Channel Model with Experimental Validation, IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in
Communications, Volume 20, No. 6, August 2002.

Using the Azimuth MIMO Range ACE Benchmark Test

1-1
Rev. v1.0

Required Hardware/Software

In a single input / single output (SISO) environment, a single RF path with Smart Motion attenuation is
used to control the signal strength. In a multi input / multi output (MIMO) environment, multiple RF paths
with Smart Motion attenuators are required.
A typical MIMO device is characterized as an NxM configuration of MIMO, where N indicates the
number of transmitters and M indicates the number of receivers. With a MIMO device that implements
spatial multiplexing, multiple simultaneous data transmissions occur carrying unique data in each stream
(N streams). The M receivers are used to receive and recover the original transmitted streams.

Setting Up the Access Point (AP)

Setting Up the Access Point (AP)

The following procedure describes how to set up the AP for use in the Azimuth MIMO Range ACE
Benchmark Test. Azimuth Director 4.5 or older does not support MIMO directly. Compared to the standard
SISO Range Vs. Rate (RvR) test, there are several differences. The RF connections used in the Azimuth
MIMO Range ACE Benchmark Test are input in the Azimuth MIMO Range ACE Benchmark Test setup
menu (instead of being deduced from the Connected Devices Manager). For the Azimuth MIMO Range
ACE Benchmark Test, adding the AP and Wireless Standalone Client (WSC) to the connected device
manager is necessary to enable the Azimuth MIMO Range ACE Benchmark Test to browse for the AP and
Station under test.
When testing 802.11n MIMO in the Azimuth system, the objective is to generate the maximum throughput
from a client or AP device under test. In some cases, due to the design of the access point having only
10/100 ethernet ports, the throughput might be limited by port speed. Most APs have a multiport ethernet
switch integrated into the product and so this throughput bottleneck can be solved by using multiple 10/100
ethernet ports on the AP and passing multiple parallel chariot streams through these ports to multiple
chariot endpoints on the wired side of the AP. Using multiple parallel streams on the Ethernet might
remove the wired-side bottleneck, depending on the APs architecture, and allows the Wi-Fi traffic to reach
maximum theoretical throughput, enabling full potential for running the benchmark test.
Setting up to three parallel streams to three unique ethernet endpoints can be achieved by connecting three
ethernet cables to the APs switch ports and via the two ethernet filter ports of the RPE enclosure and the
comm port of the RPE enclosure, each connected to a separate station with chariot endpoint software.
NOTE: To configure your test environmnet, you need to identify the IP address of the WSC MIMO wireless station
card and configure the Chariot endpoint stations appropriately, based on the AP or router device you are using. One of
the Chariot endpoints must be the Azimuth DIRECTOR. To identify the IP address of the station card in DIRECTOR,
right-click on the station card and select Ping Tool from the menu that displays. The IP address is displayed as the
Source IP Address.

To set up an AP for use in the Azimuth MIMO Range ACE Benchmark Test:
1.

In the Azimuth DIRECTOR main menu, select Tools > Connected Devices > New. The New Device
window appears (Figure 1-2).
NOTE: The APs RADIUS server (if present) must be on the same subnet as the APs Ethernet port.

a.

Select a traffic direction. If the Device Under Test Type selection on the General tab is PC Client Under
Test, the top option is for traffic heading upstream, the middle option is for traffic heading downstream,
and the bottom option is for bidirectional traffic. If the Device Under Test Type selection on the General
tab is an AP, the top option is for traffic heading downstream, the middle option is for traffic heading
upstream, and the bottom option is still for bidirectional traffic. NOTE: The Traffic Direction option
may not be available when a Client or AP device is not properly configured in the Azimuth Connected
Devices window. If you do not have Traffic Direction as a selection, return to the Connected Devices
window and select the appropriate RF connection to which the device is connected.

b.

In the Traffic Type field, select the appropriate traffic analyzer option (Chariot or Layer-3) so the test
uses that tool to measure the traffic characteristics. (Layer 3 is for downstream traffic only.)
NOTE: If you select Chariot as the Traffic generator, one of the traffic endpoints must be DIRECTOR.

c.

If the Traffic Type is Chariot, the Stream Type section displays. You can select the Single Stream radio
button to configure and send a single traffic stream between two endpoints; select the Duplicate Streams
radio button to send duplicates of the defined traffic stream between two endpoints. Select the Multiple
Wired Endpoints radio button to configure and send a traffic stream between the station and multiple
Ethernet ports; you can set up to 4 Ethernet endpoints by making a selection from the drop-down list for
(Number of Ethernet Endpoints), allowing you to possibly exceed the 100Mbps traffic limitation
imposed by a single 10/100 Ethernet port.

requires TCP as the protocol.

g.

In the Traffic Duration field, enter the length of time (in seconds) the traffic should be sent.

h.

In the Traffic Throughput field, select the data rate at which to transmit traffic. NOTE: Traffic sourced
by an STM or TMM module is limited to less that 100Mbs. Since 802.11n devices are capable of higher
throughput rates, it is recommended to use Chariot with a gigabit interface (if the AP has a gigabit
Ethernet port) to run the Azimuth MIMO Range ACE Benchmark Test. Also, gigabit Ethernet ports
need to be connected through the Azimuth Test head on the COM port. Ports E1 and E2 filtering can
interfere with the Link integrity of the gigabit Ethernet connection.

i.

In the Traffic Payload Size field, specify the size of the packet payload (in bytes). This field sets the
size of the Chariot send and receive buffers, setting the amount of data to be sent in a single Chariot
send command.

j.

If you are on the Chariot Pair Options tab, select the Save Chariot Output File checkbox to have
Chariot save its output file from the test run.

For the Packet Destination, select Unicast.

For the Traffic Protocol, select TCP.

In the Timing Record Size field, specify 200000.

In the Remote Chariot IP field, specify the IP address of the Chariot Relay Server.

In the Chariot Script field, specify the Chariot test script for the desired traffic type and rates.
Azimuth recommends using the High_Performance_Throughput.scr as the script.

For the Chariot Uses FPE field, note that Chariot uses the Front Panel Ethernet (FPE) on an STM
or TMM that has a Chariot Endpoint installed on it, and then select Yes or No accordingly.

Troubleshooting the Test

4.

If you receive an error message that specifies there is no association between the client station and the AP,
then do the following:
a.

Examine the physical cabling between the client station and the AP (Figure 1-1). Verify that Tx/Rx
antennas are connected to the appropriate ports on the ACE.

b.

Verify the logical connection between the Azimuth DIRECTOR and the AP by selecting Start and then
Run in the Windows menu of the Azimuth DIRECTOR. The Run window appears.
In the Run window, enter the following command:

cmd
The command prompt window appears. Determine if there is a connection between the Azimuth
DIRECTOR and the AP by entering the following command (replace 1.1.1.1 with the AP IP address):

ping 1.1.1.1
If there is a connection between the Azimuth DIRECTOR and the AP, you will see a message indicating
the number of packets received. If you see the message Request timed out, then there is no connection
between Azimuth DIRECTOR and the AP.
c.

Verify the logical connection between the WSC and the Azimuth DIRECTOR by selecting the WSC
configured to generate traffic.
Open the remote desktop for that WSC and verify that the STA can associate to the AP and that it
obtains an IP address from DHCP.
Open a command prompt box by selecting Start and then Command Prompt in the Windows menu.
Determine if there is a connection between the STM and the Azimuth DIRECTOR by entering the
following command (192.168.1.1 is the IP address of the Azimuth DIRECTOR over Test-Net):

ping 192.168.1.1
If there is a connection between the STM and the Azimuth DIRECTOR then you will see a message
indicating the number of packets received. If you see the message Request timed out, then there is no
connection between Azimuth DIRECTOR and the WSC.
5.

If you receive an error message that specifies that no traffic is being received by the WSC:
a.

Unplug the Ethernet cable from the WSC.

b.

Verify the connection between the Azimuth DIRECTOR and the AP by selecting Start and then Run in
the Windows menu of the Azimuth DIRECTOR. The Run window appears.
In the Run window, enter the following command:

cmd
The command prompt window appears.
Determine if there is a connection between the WSC and the AP by entering the following command
(where 1.1.1.1 is the AP IP address):

ping 1.1.1.1
If there is a connection between the WSC and the AP, you will see a message indicating the number of
packets received. If you see the message Request timed out, then there is no connection between
WSC and the AP. If this occurs, verify the channel, SSID, and security settings on both the AP and the
Station and associate the Station to the AP.

Reviewing Test Results

Reviewing Test Results

The optimal results of the Azimuth MIMO Range ACE Benchmark Test are to verify the expected
operation of the client station over a range of power levels. The results enable you to determine if the
throughput and RSSI, in particular, are operating at the expected parameters at various attenuation levels.
This section shows selected output examples of test results.
You can view the test results in several ways:

Log Tab For detailed information on test runs, select the Log tab. This highly detailed log describes the
result of the test, throughput, operation results, configuration setup messages, measured output, errors,
causes of errors, and other statistics. This is perhaps the most useful method to review and determine what
caused a failure in the test, or to see what events were occurring at a particular time during the test iteration
at which the test results were or were not as expected.

System Log This log provides general system messages related to the module, station, and chassis.

Graphs Tab To see the results graphs during various attenuation levels during each test iteration, select
the Graphs Tab. The graphs depict throughput, RSSI, packet error, and data rate test results. The parameters
in each of the Graphs tabs are presented in Azimuth MIMO Range ACE Benchmark Test Parameters on
page A-1.

Azimuth Studio You can view and compare test results from different test runs in Azimuth Studio.
Studio offers a database server to store test results and offers a browser-based solution for viewing and
comparing test results. For specific information on viewing these results, please see Viewing and
Comparing Test Results in Azimuth Studio on page 1-25. For more information about Azimuth Studio, see
the Azimuth Studio User Guide (publication number 15503).

Configuration Security Parameters

You must configure RADIUS and certificates when running the Azimuth MIMO Range ACE Benchmark
Test if you are configuring 802.1x, WPA, or WPA2 and you are using any of the following: EAP-FAST,
EAP-TLS, LEAP, PEAPv1/GTC and PEAP/MSCHAPv2. Certificates can reside in two places depending
on the authentication type they are using. TLS requires a client certificate (that can reside in a WSC or
STM). If using PEAP, you need to install a server certificate on the RADIUS server (usually the
DIRECTOR). If the station under test is not configured to check certificates, you do not have to install a
certificate on the client. If the station under test is configured to check certificates, you must install a
certificate on the client.
NOTE: The NDIS or Funk security management features are persistent. Even after rebooting the STM or the
Azimuth DIRECTOR, the option will remain as selected.
