kiteboarding, baking, and traveling. He has valued Blended Learning since the days of Anker
Tests and iMacs but sharing devices has always hampered progress. A few years ago he
acquired enough computers for students in his classroom (and a couple other classrooms)
to each have their own device. These students now learn coding on Scratch via CSFIRST.COM and CODE.ORG, participate in classroom discussions and complete
assignments on CLASSROOM.GOOGLE.COM and have almost limitless access to
LEXIA.COM, STMATH.COM, ACHIEVE3000.COM and LIGHTSAIL.COM to learn at their
pace. This translates to the majority of his students finishing their 2nd Grade STMATH
curriculum by December and having moving on to 3rd and 4th grade material. During the
intense Eureka math block they revisit familiar math concepts and no longer have to learn
new and difficult concepts on a set schedule. Math time is more enjoyable and the students
are more successful. Students who entered his classroom years behind in LEXIA.COM are
on-track to finish their 2nd grade curriculum or are working on 3rd-5th grade material.

1. Hello Illuminate Hybrid Assessments
Goodbye 20-Page AP Exam Packetsor any packets for that matter!Does picking up a
huge stack of 22-page exam packets for AP students, produce a lingering feeling of guilt
when reflecting on our ecological footprint? Well, worry no more! Simply upload an
electronic copy of the assessment to Illuminate and allow students to read it on their screen,
while selecting their answer choices (side by side) and VOILA! Youve got yourself a spicy
Illuminate Hybrid Assessment.
2. Achieve3000 and Reclassification
If literature affords knowledge-power-pleasure, how do we ensure access for all? Should
we verify learning? That is, students learning the English language must score at a
minimum of Basic proficiency for their respective grade levels on the Scholastic Reading
Inventory (SRI) in order to reclassify as literate in English. Or should we use assessments
for learning, instead? Achieve3000 affords students with opportunities to (1) read a lot, (2)
work with texts students can read, and (3) develop thoughtful literacy. Let us focus on

Richard Allingtons findings and serve, our readers who struggle, well.
3. Illuminate + DDI = PLC: Strictly for the Non-Core Academics
Hey, during a department meeting, have you ever, oh IDK, discussed what we want
students to learn? Thereafter, scanned student responses into Illuminate hoping that the
results would indicate that our kids learned it? And then stopped dead in your tracks toward
teaching and learning because useful desegregated data evaded your non-core department
results? Well I haveuntil now! Create the assessment, align it to standards, scan
responses, print reports and proceed safely through Steps 4 and 5 in the DDI.
4. Social Justice Media Project: Transformative Technology Integration
Have your students create previously inconceivable content that influences the outside
world. At this Redefinition Level, invisibly weave computer and digital literacy into the
demands of Action Civics.
5. Carry Science Projects home effortlessly on the Cloud
You dont have to stack bulky projects into your teacher cart and make multiple rounds to
your car anymore. Have students upload projects onto Google Sites via his or her LAUSD
Student E-mail account. Then doc each site link onto Symbaloo with a tile of your students
choice to represent her or his project. Login to your Symbaloo class account from home
and view all projects at your leisure.
