1.0

SCOPE OF SPECIFICATION

1.1

Introduction

1.1.1

This specification covers the general requirements for design, fabrication, inspection and testing for rotary
positive displacement pumps.

1.1.2

This specification applies to equipment for refineries, onshore oil and gas installations, and processing
facilities including items purchased either directly or as part of a package.

1.1.3

The Vendor/Contractor shall comply fully with the provisions laid down in this specification.
exception must be authorised in writing by the Owner.

1.1.4

In the event of any conflict between this specification and the Data Sheets, or with any of the applicable
Codes and Standards, the Vendor/Contractor shall inform the Owner in writing and receive written
clarification before proceeding with the work.

1.1.5

This General Engineering Specification will form part of the Purchase Order/Contract.

1.1.6

This specification is based on, and must be read in conjunction with, API Standard 676, "Positive
Displacement Pumps - Rotary". It mainly applies to medium pressure, two or three rotor screw pumps,
eccentric screw pumps and gear pumps but may also be applied to rotating lobe, sliding vane and swash
plate plunger pumps.

1.1.8

The Vendor/Contractor shall be responsible for the complete pumping package including the driver.

Unless otherwise specified on the individual Data Sheets, the pump, driving equipment and auxiliary
equipment shall be mounted, prealigned and shipped on a common fabricated steel baseplate

The Vendor/Contractor shall ensure all Sub-Contractors comply with the relevant sections of the above
specifications.
1.3

Data Sheets
The technical data supplied by the Owner for the equipment is provided on the API Standard 676 Data
Sheets which are included at the end of this specification.
The Vendor/Contractor shall complete the Data Sheets with the remaining information and submit them
with his proposal.
Prior to shipment, the Vendor/Contractor shall submit a complete set of "As-Built" Data Sheets.

The technical terms used in this specification are as defined in Paragraph 1.4 of API 676.
2.2

Contractual
The commercial terms used in this specification are defined as follows:
Owner
The oil or gas company, an associate or subsidiary who is the end user of the equipment and facilities.
Vendor
The company supplying the equipment and material.
Sub-Contractor
A company awarded a contract by a contractor to do part of the work awarded to the Contractor.
Inspection Authority
The organisation representing the Owner or Contractor that verifies that the equipment and facilities have
been designed, constructed, inspected and tested in accordance with the requirements of this specification
and the Purchase Order/Contract.
Inspector
A qualified individual representing the Owner, Vendor/Contractor or the assigned Inspection Authority,
who verifies that the equipment has been designed, constructed, inspected and tested in accordance with the
requirements of this specification and the Purchase Order/Contract.

3.0

DESIGN

3.1

Codes and Standards

3.1.1

The design shall comply with this specification and the following Codes and Standards:
API 676 Positive Displacement Pumps - Rotary.
Additionally, pumps in sour service shall comply with NACE Standard:
MR-01-75, "Sulphide Stress Corrosion Resistant Metallic Materials for Oil Field Equipment".

3.1.2

Unless specified otherwise in the Purchase Order/Contract, the current editions of the Codes and Standards
at the time of the order should be used.

3.2

Additions and Exceptions to API 676


The following paragraph numbers refer to API 676, Second Edition, which shall be considered as forming
a part of this General Engineering Specification.

In API 676, paragraphs are marked with a bullet () if the Owner has to make a decision or provide
information. Where possible, these decisions have been made or alternatively guidelines provided. Such
paragraphs are marked "*" in this specification.

Alternative Design
Add:
Metric flanges/connections are not acceptable. Flanges connections shall be to ASME
B16.5. Metric fasteners may be used, (except on flange bolts) with prior approval of the
Owner.

2.0

Basic Design

API

2.1

General

2.1.1

Add:
Rotary positive displacement pumps shall be supplied only by Vendor/Contractors qualified by
experience in manufacturing the units proposed. To qualify, the Vendor/Contractor must have
manufactured at the proposed point of manufacture, at least two pumps of comparable duty,
power, speed and liquid pumped. These pumps must have been in service for at least one year and
be performing satisfactorily.

2.1.3 * All operating conditions will be provided by the Owner on the Data Sheets.
2.1.4 * The sound level measurement at 3.3 ft (1.0m) from the surface of the equipment including driver
shall not exceed 85 dB(A). It is expected that special noise abatement treatment may be required.
The Vendor/Contractor shall submit anticipated and guaranteed noise data with his proposal, and
shall ensure any acoustic treatment does not interfere with access to the equipment for
maintenance.
2.1.5

Add:
The Vendor/Contractor shall assume full responsibility for the complete pump, coupling and
driver package.

2.1.6 * Add:
The Vendor/Contractor shall provide full information on his drawings to enable the Owner to
provide adequate clearance and safe access to the pump package.
2.1.7 * Add:
Area classification data will be included on the Data Sheets.
2.1.11 * Add:
The required operating and site conditions will be specified on the Data Sheets.
2.1.13

Add:
The NPSH requirements shall be based on water. NPSH correction factors for hydrocarbons shall
not be applied. At rated flow, NPSHR shall be at least 3.3ft (1.0m) less than NPSHA or less than

0.66 x NPSHA whichever is the lower value.


2.1.14

Add new paragraph:


Pumps shall be self priming.

2.2

Pressure Casings

2.2.1 * Unless otherwise specified, the maximum allowable working pressure shall be at least equal to
110% of the rated discharge pressure, to allow a margin for setting the relief valve.
2.2.4.2 Add:
Studs shall be provided for all pressure containing applications, cap screws shall not be used.

2.3

Casing Connections

2.3.1 * All connections shall be flanged for all sizes from " up. The inlet flange shall be of the same
rating as the discharge flange.
2.3.6

Add:
Bolt holes shall straddle centrelines.

2.3.6.2 Add:
Flat faced flanges are prohibited except with cast iron casing material.
2.3.6.4 *Add:
Mating flanges and gaskets shall be standard ANSI without exception.
2.3.9

Add new paragraph;


The Vendor/Contractor shall provide flanged vent and drain connections, and shall include gauge
connections and gauges recommended for the normal safe operation of the pumps. The Owner
will supply inlet and outlet pressure gauges only.

2.4

External Forces and Moments


Add:
Pumps shall be capable of withstanding 1.25 times the forces and moments in this paragraph.
Where the Vendor/Contractors pump design is able to exceed this figure the maximum
permissable forces and moments should be given in the proposal.

2.5

Rotating Elements

2.5.2

Add:
Rotor bodies not integral with the shaft require the Owner's approval, and shall preferably be
shrunk and keyed to the shaft.

2.6

Mechanical Seals and Conventional Packing

2.6.1.1 Mechanical seals are required: stuffing boxes with ring packing are not acceptable.

2.6.1.7 Add:
No external flushing medium is available.
2.6.1.8 Double or tandem mechanical seals shall be provided for:
Light hydrocarbons or flammable service with seal chamber vapour pressure 70 psia (480 kPaa);
Toxic services e.g liquids containing H2S.
2.6.1.10 Add new paragraph:
Mechanical seal parts shall be of the following material as a minimum:
-

stationary seal ring gasket - Viton (Buna N or Neoprene is not acceptable),

seal ring to sleeve gasket - Viton (Buna N or Neoprene is not acceptable),

seal ring - carbon,

mating seal rings - Tungsten Carbide,

springs - 316 SS or alloy 20,

other metal parts - 316 SS,

seal end plate - 316 SS,

throttle bushing - bronze/carbon.

Where the above materials are not suitable for the corrosiveness of the liquid pumped, the
Vendor/Contractor shall recommend substitute materials for review and approval by the Owner.
2.6.1.11 Add new paragraph:
The Vendor/Contractor shall obtain a seal operating guarantee from the seal manufacturers.
The Owner reserves the right to hold technical discussions with the selected seal manufacturers.

Bearings

2.7.1

Add:

Vendors/Contractors shall have had experience of pumping on similar duties and shall indicate the
minimum bearing life expected/guaranteed in the service proposed. This applies particularly to
pumps with internal bearings lubricated by the pumped fluid - Vendor/Contractor to indicate any
special design features offered e.g. filtered flush fluid etc.

2.8

Lubrication

2.8.3 * Constant level oilers shall be provided if the standard bearing reservoir requires top up more than
once per week.

3.0

Accessories

3.1

Drivers

3.1.1 * The driver unit shall comply with GES L.11 or GES K.10 and shall be able to drive the pump
continuously while it is operating at the relief valve set point, plus full accumulation, which shall
not be less than the setting recommended in paragraph 3.4 of API 676.
3.1.2 * Add:
Any variations in operating conditions will be given on the Data Sheet by the Owner.
3.1.3 * Unless otherwise stated the motor starting conditions will be "direct on line".
3.1.4 * Add:
The comment under 3.1.1 above shall overrule.
3.1.5 * For motor detailed requirements refer to the motor data sheet.
3.1.10

Add new paragraph:


Where a prime mover and gear drive is specified, a torsional analysis of the drive train with pump
shall be made to ensure that no critical speeds fall within 10% of the operating range.

3.2

Couplings and Guards

3.2.1

Add:
Stainless steel disc spacer flexible couplings shall be supplied.

3.2.6

Couplings shall be balanced to the same or better standard than the pump rotor.

Mounting Plates

The baseplate shall be of fabricated steel.

Lifting lugs or eyes shall be provided on the baseplate for single point lifting. Lugs shall be 100%
radiographed. Spreader bars shall be included by the Vendor/Contractor if required for single
point lifting.
3.3.2.8 *A drip rim type baseplate with flanged drain shall be supplied. The pump, driver and accessories
shall be located within the perimeter of the baseplate. Motor terminal box(es) may overhang it.
3.3.2.9 *Add new paragraph:
The baseplate shall be sufficiently rigid for transportation by land and sea: it shall be suitable for
grouting only and column mounting is not required. Two screwed earthing bosses shall be welded
to the baseplate, at diametrically opposite corners.
3.4.1 * The Vendor/Contractor shall furnish the relief valves that are to be installed on equipment or in
piping that the Vendor/Contractor is supplying.

Piping

3.5.3

Add:
Auxiliary process piping shall be rated to at least the maximum allowable working pressure of the
pump casing.

4.0

MATERIALS

4.1

API 676 Requirements


The Vendor/Contractor shall provide materials in accordance with paragraph 2.9 of API 676 as amended
below:

Materials

2.9.1.2 Add:
Materials not conforming to ASTM Standards are subject to approval by the Owner.
2.9.1.6 *Add:
Corrosive agents in the process fluid and the environment will be specified by the Owner on the
Data Sheets. If hydrogen sulphide is specified as being in the pumped liquid, pump construction
materials shall be in accordance with NACE Standard MR-01-75.
2.9.1.14 Add new paragraph:
Asbestos shall not be used in any form that can result in free asbestos becoming a health hazard.
The Vendor/Contractor shall declare all asbestos use and submit alternative material for review by
the Owner.
2.9.2.2 Add:
Improperly fused chaplets in iron castings may not be replaced with plugs.
2.9.2.3 Add:
All material repairs shall be subject to the approval of the Owner. The Vendor/Contractor shall
provide full details including an approved repair procedure.

5.0

INSPECTION

5.1

Procedures

5.1.1

The inspection requirements are covered by the document "General Conditions of Purchase" which forms
part of the Purchase Order/Contract. Additional requirements are given below.

5.1.2

The Vendor/Contractor shall allow the Inspector free access to all areas of manufacture, fabrication,
assembly and testing.

5.1.3

The Vendor/Contractor always have the responsibility to provide adequate quality control and inspection of
equipment and materials.
Any inspection by Owner or his Inspector shall not relieve the
Vendor/Contractor of these responsibilities or those under his guarantees.

5.1.4

Inspection shall be in accordance with API 676 and this specification. All inspection activities to be
performed, including any special requirements, shall be agreed with the Owner and shall be incorporated
within the agreed Quality Control Plan provided by the Vendor/Contractor. The Quality Control Plan shall
be coordinated with and shall include the quality plan of major Sub-Contractors. The Vendor/Contractor
shall submit procedures for all applicable NDT techniques for approval by the Owner before production
commences.

5.1.5

All operators of NDT equipment shall have thorough knowledge of the operation of the equipment to be
used and shall hold an appropriate certificate of competence, which is to be reviewed by the Owner.

5.2

Scope
4.2.1 * Add:
Actual mill or foundry certificates are required for pressure containing parts.
4.2.2.1 Add:
100% inspection of all pressure containing welds is required: radiography is the preferred method
where this is feasible.
The Vendor/Contractor shall propose in his quality plan, the parts to be examined and the type of
examination for the approval of the Owner. The Owner and Vendor/Contractor shall then jointly
agree the required witnessing of inspection and hold points.
4.2.2.4.1 Add:
Cast steel parts shall be magnetic particle inspected as a minimum.
4.2.3.3 *Add:
The Owner will witness/inspect for cleanliness.
4.2.3.5 Add new paragraph:
The Vendor/Contractor shall inspect and record final assembly maintenance/running clearances.

5.3

Nameplates
Nameplates shall be provided complying with paragraph 2.10 of API 676 and showing the following

additional information required:


Maximum allowable working pressure psig,
Rated suction and discharge pressure psig,
Rated speed rpm,
Rated power BHP.
6.0

TESTING

6.1

Statutory (or Required) Tests

6.1.1

The following tests shall be performed by the Vendor/Contractor:


(a)

NDT on all pump components,

(b)

Hydrostatic tests,

(c)

Mechanical run test,

(d)

Performance test (for critical service only - see Data Sheets),

(e)

NPSH test (for critical conditions only-see Data Sheets),

(f)

Complete package test (if specified on Data Sheets),

(g)

Auxiliary equipment tests (motors, gears).

Critical service for the performance test will be advised by the Owner. Critical conditions requiring the
execution of an NPSH test shall occur when the requirements of the comments on API paragraph 2.1.13 in
this specification cannot be met with an adequate margin. The Vendor/Contractor is required to offer
NPSH test as an optional extra in the proposal.
6.1.2

The Owner may waive the execution and or witnessing of the tests if the pumps involved are of small
power requirements or where NPSHA significantly exceeds NPSHR. Details of requirements will be given
on the Data Sheets by the Owner.

6.1.3

Hydrostatic tests shall be carried out in the presence of the Owner's Inspector.

6.2

Test Procedures

6.2.1

The Vendor/Contractor shall submit his test procedures in writing to the Owner for approval prior to the
start of the testing programme.

6.2.2

Testing shall be carried out in compliance with paragraph 4.3 of API 676 amended as follows:

Tests

4.3.1.4 Add new paragraph:


Test pressure gauges shall be of the direct reading type and shall be periodically calibrated. The
certificate of calibration shall be presented to the Owner's Inspector prior to commencement of
tests.
4.3.2.1 Add:

Test pressure shall be 1 times working pressure but not less than 112.5 psig (80 kPag).
4.3.2.6 Add new paragraph:
No type of preservative or paint shall be allowed to cover any pressure containing components any
mechanical or welded joints before the hydrostatic test is completed.
4.3.3

Add:
A mechanical run test is required and shall preferably be performed with a fluid at the design
temperature and having the same viscosity and lubricating properties to the proposed operating
fluid in the field. The Vendor/Contractor shall advise the fluid to be used and the greatest load at
which the mechanical test can be run. The run test shall be for a minimum period of four hours
but the pump need not be run with the job motor.

4.3.3.1 Add new paragraph:


A complete package test, where specified, shall cover all purchased equipment including the
contract driver. The complete package shall be run for four hours, replacing the mechanical run
test. Correct operation of all equipment, alarms and shutdowns shall be demonstrated.
4.3.4.1 *Performance tests shall be conducted on all pumps where the rated power equals or exceeds 75hp
(50kW). Where pumps cannot be tested on a pumped fluid of the same characteristics to the site
fluid, the Vendor/Contractor and Owner shall review the Vendor/Contractor's data and mutually
agree on the expected performance on the test fluid.
4.3.4.3 *NPSH tests will be required by the Owner when the requirements of the comments on API
paragraph 2.1.13 in this specification cannot be met with an adequate margin. Vendor/Contractors
are required to offer an NPSH test as an optional extra.
6.3

Test Certificates
The following test certificates shall be provided:-

The Vendor/Contractor's physical and chemical certification of steel pressure parts and forgings.

(b)

Certification for magnetic particle, dye penetrant, radiographic and ultrasonic examinations.

(c)

Certified shop logs of mechanical running and performance tests.

(d)

Hydrostatic Test Certificates

(e)

A record of shop test data (which the Vendor/Contractor shall maintain for at least 5 years after
the date of shipment). The Vendor/Contractor shall supply certified copies of test data to the
Owner before shipment.

Site Performance Testing


When required by the Purchase Order/Contract, the Vendor/Contractor shall carry out a pump performance
test at site.

7.0

DOCUMENTATION

7.1

Introduction

7.1.1

This section covers the documentation required for the design, selection, fabrication, inspection and testing
for all the equipment, components and services to be provided against this specification.

7.1.2

The detailed list of documents that are required is included with the Purchase Order/Contract.

7.1.3

The documents as listed may be considered as a minimum requirement; all details to confirm compliance
with the relevant specifications, and to allow a full and continued appraisal to be made of the
Vendor/Contractors' proposals and interpretations of the ordered equipment, should be submitted in
accordance with the schedule specified in the Purchase Order/Contract.

7.1.4

No production or procurement activities shall be undertaken by the Vendor/Contractor prior to the relevant
documentation being submitted and reviewed by the Owner.

7.1.5

On all documentation the Purchase Order/Contract number, equipment title, tag number and project name
shall be quoted.

7.1.6

All documentation shall be checked and signed by the checker before submission.

7.2

Schedules and Reports

7.2.1

The Vendor/Contractor shall submit with his proposal a preliminary Quality Control Plan.

7.2.2

The Vendor/Contractor shall include with his proposal documentation a statement of proposed SubContractors, a document submission schedule for all documents based on a review cycle of three weeks and
outline programme for procurement and production activities.

7.2.3

The Vendor/Contractor shall incorporate any revisions agreed with the Owner during the enquiry review
stage and submit revised documentation for approval.

7.2.4

Monthly reports shall be submitted by the Vendor/Contractor detailing design, procurement, production
and documentation activities. The format of which shall be agreed with the Owner.

7.2.5

A co-ordination meeting shall be held within four weeks of the placement of the Purchase Order/Contract
to review all engineering, manufacturing and documentation requirements.

7.3

Data and Calculations

7.3.1

The Vendor/Contractor shall supply with his proposal completed Data Sheets containing all the relevant
information necessary for appraisal of the design by the Owner.

7.3.2

Project specific instructions will be issued to the Vendor/Contractor with the Purchase Order/Contract,
which describes the data and calculations to be submitted, and the methods of submission.

7.3.3

The Vendor/Contractor shall be responsible for obtaining approvals from the Inspection Authority.

7.3.4

All calculations shall be carried out in clear and logical manner. Where conditions involve the use of
formulae or methods not specified in the Design Code, the source of these formulae or methods shall be
clearly referenced.

7.3.5

Computer calculations will only be acceptable if all input is shown, together with calculated values of
intermediate terms and factors and options chosen, as well as final calculated dimensions, stresses or other
values and the computer program has been validated to the satisfaction of the Owner.

7.3.6

Calculations and drawings that are interdependent, i.e. foundation loading and equipment footprint, shall be
presented for appraisal together.

7.4

Drawings

7.4.1

The drawings listed with the Purchase Order/Contract shall be sent by the Vendor/Contractor to the Owner
and/or the Inspection Authority for review and approval.

7.4.2

The components and process to produce the ordered equipment shall be shown in sufficient detail to be
fully appraised eg, plating drawings, shall as a minimum, show the position of all through thickness welds,
together with material thicknesses and specifications, clearly indicating the welding procedure specification
which is applicable to each weld.

7.4.3

General arrangement drawings shall be to scale and show the relative location and main dimensions of all
components including elevations and orientations of nozzles, lifting lugs, nameplates and supports.

7.4.4

Detail drawings which may be included on the general arrangement shall include thicknesses and
dimensions of all components, weld details, machining and surface finish requirements, gasket and
nameplate details.

7.4.5

As-built drawings may be the general arrangement drawings marked-up with the actual as-built dimensions.

7.5

Final Records, Documents and Manuals

7.5.1

Two (2) copies of the Data Dossier shall be supplied, and shall be a record of the manufacturing process. It
shall contain the following:

the Quality Control Plan,
material certificates,
chemical analysis certificates,
positive material identification certificates,
weld procedures,
welder qualifications,
NDT procedures and records,
heat treatment charts,
hazardous area certificates,
balance certificates,
hydrostatic pressure tests procedures, and test certificate,
performance test procedures, and test certificate,
non-conformity records,
approvals by the Inspection Authority,
certificate of conformity,
Owner's release certificate.

Six (6) sets of the Installation, Operations and Maintenance Manual shall be specifically compiled for the
equipment supplied. A compendium of manufacturer's data for a range of like products is not acceptable.
The manuals shall contain the following:
-

a description of the equipment, process and controls philosophy,


the master document list and certified copies of key drawings,
packing, shipping and site preservation instructions,
step by step installation instructions,
step by step pre-commissioning procedures,
step by step commissioning procedures,
normal start up, operating and shutdown procedures,
step by step procedures for dismantling and re-assembly.
normal operating and set point values for all instruments,
routine preventive maintenance schedule and major repair procedures.
lubrication, chemicals, consumables schedule,

The manuals shall be presented in A4 format, and be securely bound in heavy duty 4 ring binders.
7.5.3

The Vendor/Contractor shall supply one set of mylar original drawings.

7.5.4

The Vendor/Contractor shall submit as a minimum, all the data and drawings as defined in API 676 Section
5 as amended below:
5.2

Contract Data
All data listed in 5.3 plus the following:Certified copies of test data shall be submitted prior to shipment,
Torsional analysis for gear driven units.

8.0

PRIOR TO SHIPMENT

8.1

Painting
Surface preparation painting and painting materials shall be in accordance with GES X.01, GES X.02 and
GES X.03. Vendor/Contractor may offer manufacturer's standard paint system suitable for the duty as an
option.

8.2

Spares
The Vendor/Contractor shall submit with his proposal, a priced list of recommended spare parts for start-up
and two (2) years operation, for review by the Owner.

8.3

Packing and Storage

8.3.1

This section describes the minimum requirement for the preservation and protection of rotary positive
displacement pumps during the sea and land transportation and storage, prior to installation.

8.3.2

The following preparation for shipment shall be a minimum requirement.


After mechanical completion at the works, the pumps shall be left in a clean dry condition.
The Vendor/Contractor shall be responsible for loading and anchoring the item(s) to prevent damage during
shipment. This shall be done at the Vendor/Contractor's works and may be achieved by firmly fixing the
equipment to wooden pallets or crates, as part of an approved packing procedure.

8.3.3

The preparation for shipment shall comply with API 676 Section 4.4 as amended below:
4.4.1

The equipment shall be prepared for export shipment by sea. Shipment as non-containerised deck
cargo is not permissible.
The probable storage period will be specified in the order/enquiry and will extend from the time of
despatch to the time of unpacking at site. If the storage period is not stated, a minimum period of
24 months shall be assumed.

Painting shall comply with GES X.01, GES X.02 and GES X.03 unless the manufacturer's paint
system has been accepted by the Owner.
8.4

Shipping
Detailed shipping arrangements will be given in the Purchase Order/Contract.
Pumps with seals installed, drivers and all furnished auxiliaries shall be fully assembled on the baseplate
except that coupling spacers shall be removed, boxed and tagged and attached to the skid with any other
items which are better shipped separately e.g. pulsation vessels.
The equipment shall not leave the Vendor/Contractor's works for shipment until the release certificate has
been approved by the Owner's Inspector.

8.5

Warranty

8.5.1

The Vendor/Contractor shall provide manufacturer's written guarantees of pump performance.

8.5.2

The Vendor/Contractor shall warrant all materials and services supplied against any defect for a minimum
of 12 months after commissioning or 24 months from the date of delivery to site, whichever is the shorter
period, or for the period stipulated in the Purchase Order/Contract.

8.5.3

Should any item be found defective, the vendor shall be responsible for all costs associated with restoring
the equipment to the standard specified by the Purchase Order/Contract.
