Getting to know
our new faculty
advisor Dr. Yates!
Experience with Student Organizations:
As an undergraduate, I participated in
a student organization (SIFE: Students
in Free Enterprise) and joined a jazz
band. I also played hockey.
From my experience working in student organizations, I believe it is
most important to build the organization as a community and develop
relationships with each other. This allows you talk to each other, support each other and share with each other. If you pass a qualifying exam
or get a job, your community will be happy for you. Being supported in
this way is extremely beneficial. So, my advice for students is to actively
participate and get involved!

About INFORMS Student Chapter:

One thing that the INFORMS student chapter has done pretty well is
recruiting new members. Because recruiting has been successful, it is a
large organization. What INFORMS needs to do now is improve participation. The Friday seminar is a great opportunity, but we need to increase attendance.
We also need to reach out and get more involved in the local community. Chapter participation in the Big Event this semester was excellent.
We need to do more things like that. We should also enhance our visibility and let people outside campus know who we are. It is a win-win
strategy.

Favorite INFORMS-SC activities:

One of my favorites was the Industry-Academia Panel Discussion. Mr.
Matthew of NASA, Dr. Kianfar, Dr. Natarajan, Mr. Marc Lockard and
Mr. Paul Sinclair participated. It was a very positive and energetic discussion with both industry and academic perspectives shared.
Another was the INFORMS luncheon with Dr. Denton. Fifteen students
and several faculty members were invited to participate in the luncheon
with Dr. Denton. The two-way communication that started when students asked questions showed the benefits of being able to interact with
both industry and faculty.

A Word from the President

Howdy!
One more successful semester for the
Texas A&M University Student Chapter
of INFORMS has come to an end. I
thank the student chapter members for
giving me the opportunity to serve as
president this year. Our team of INFORMS officers and volunteers with
guidance and encouragement from our
advisor, Dr. Yates, organized numerous
events throughout the semester. And,
we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly along
the way. I hope everyone found them as
beneficial and fun as we did. A BIG
thank you to all the past and current
officers and volunteers, staff and faculty
members who made these events possible. We are excitedly planning a ton of events for the rest of the year that will include an international
potluck and an ice-cream social during the summer. In the fall, we are ambitiously trying to coordinate
a field trip to NASA! We are also working on a plan to reach out to high school and undergraduate students to build interest in industrial engineering and to encourage the idea of attending grad school. Of
course, we will continue with our popular weekly academic seminars and Coffee N Cookie hours.
While planning and organizing all these events, we will be very happy to get your feedback and suggestions. Do let us know how we are doing and join our team as a volunteer if you would like to help with
any of our events.
Wishing everyone good luck until we publish the next newsletter,

Samyukta Sethuraman
President
