1: General Information
This manual contains installation, operation, maintenance and parts information. Information
in this manual should enable qualified personnel to install, operate and troubleshoot this
system. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information contained
herein. M/D Totco, a National Oilwell Varco company, will not be held liable for errors in this
material, or for consequences arising from misuse of this material.

Conventions
Notes, Cautions, and Warnings
Notes, cautions, and warnings provide readers with additional information and advise the
reader to take specific action to protect personnel from potential injury or lethal conditions.
They may also inform the reader of actions necessary to prevent equipment damage. Please
pay close attention to these advisories
Note:

The note symbol indicates that additional information is provided about


the current topics.

Caution:

The caution symbol indicates that potential damage to equipment or


injury to personnel exists. Follow instructions explicitly. Extreme care
should be taken when performing operations or procedures preceded by
this caution symbol.

Warning:

The warning symbol indicates a definite risk of equipment damage


or danger to personnel. Failure to observe and follow proper
procedures could result in serious or fatal injury to personnel,
significant property loss, or significant equipment damage.

ESD
Warning:

The ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) warning symbol indicates that


static control precautions are needed.

Illustrations
Illustrations (figures) provide a graphical representation of equipment components or screen
snapshots for use in identifying parts or establishing nomenclature, and may or may not be
drawn to scale.

1: General Information

Safety Requirements
M/D Totco equipment is installed and operated in a controlled drilling rig environment involving
hazardous situations. Proper maintenance is important for safe and reliable operation.
Procedures outlined in M/D Totco manuals are the recommended methods of performing
operations and maintenance.
To avoid injury to personnel or equipment damage, carefully observe requirements
outlined in this section.

Personnel Training
All personnel performing installation, operations, repair, or maintenance procedures on the
equipment, or those in the vicinity of the equipment, should be trained on rig safety, tool
operation, and maintenance to ensure their safety.
Personnel should wear protective gear during installation, maintenance, and certain
operations.

Recommended Tools
Service operations may require the use of tools designed specifically for the purpose
described. M/D Totco recommends that only those tools specified be used when stated.
Ensure that personnel and equipment safety are not jeopardized when following service
procedures or using tools not specifically recommended by M/D Totco.

General System Safety Practices


The equipment discussed in this manual may require or contain one or more utilities, such as
electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, or cooling water.
Read and follow the guidelines below before installing equipment or performing
maintenance to avoid endangering exposed persons or damaging equipment.

Isolate energy sources before beginning work.

Avoid performing maintenance or repairs while the equipment is in operation.

Wear proper protective equipment during equipment installation, maintenance, or repair.

Replacing Components

Verify that all components (such as cables, hoses, etc.) are tagged and labeled during
assembly and disassembly of equipment to ensure correct installment.

Replace failed or damaged components with genuine M/D Totco parts. Failure to do so
could result in equipment damage or injury to personnel.

Routine Maintenance
Equipment must be maintained on a routine basis. See the service manual for maintenance
recommendations.
Failure to conduct routine maintenance could result in equipment damage or injury to
personnel.

2: Overview
Installation
The WellDataTM application gives Operators and Contractors the ability to securely store and
view data regarding wells and rigs pertaining to their separate companies. The application
also allows them to share this data in a concise and organized manner with other users.
The following list summarizes the major steps to install and run the WellData application:
Prepare and verify that the pre-requisite software is installed and configured on the
computer(s).
Install Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Run the WellData application.

Software type / Required Software


Computer Operating System Windows 95/98/NT, Internet Explorer 4.0 (w/ VM IE 5.0 upgrade)
or greater, or Netscape Navigator 4.5 or greater.

Install Adobe Acrobat


Before running any of the PDF files from the application (Tour Sheets or Morning Reports),
you will need to download and install the most current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader from
the Adobe website http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. Once at the site,
follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Run the WellData Application


Run the WellData application from either Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator using the
address http://www.WellData.net.
Enter in your username and password and select Log On to be taken to your Home Page.

Navigation Menu
From anywhere on the WellData site you have the ability to access the different areas of the
application from the navigation menu. This menu has the following options

Home: Brings you back to the Home Page


Well: Takes you to well informational areas of the application
Options: Takes you to the User Preferences area of the application
Account: Allows you to change you current user password
Contact: Allows you to directly contact the Varco team through email
Logoff: Logs you out of the WellData site

2: Overview

Log Off WellData


Once you have completed your session on WellData, you will need to log off the site. To do
this, just select Log Off from the main navigation menu. This will end your session and take
you back to the main page.

Usage
The rest of this manual pertains to the usage of WellData. Each chapter is labeled in
correspondence to the main links at the top of the WellData site.
You are now ready to begin using WellData!

Home Page
The Home Page screen shows general well information, which can be customized according
to the users needs. For more information, see "Home Page Preferences" on page 23.

Well List Reports: Generates a well list report in


PDF format
Print Rig: Allows printing of reports for one or
more dates for a single rig.
Print Day: Allows printing of reports for one or
more dates for all a contractors rigs.

Note: Insure that pop-ups are allowed for WellData.net in order to print reports to PDF.
Operator, Well Name, Location, Contractor, Rig, Spud, Rig Release
These buttons enable the data to be to sorted by their respective names. When these buttons
are selected once, the information will be shown in ascending order. When selected a second
time, the information will be shown in descending order.
From the Home Page screen, a more detailed description of the well can be accessed by
selecting the operator name associated with the well. Clicking any name or description in one
of the fields (Operator, Well Name, Location, etc.), opens the Well Summary for that well.

Well Summary
Note: Click a listed operator on the Home Page to view the Well Summary. All
security permission levels may use this function.
The Well Summary screen can be accessed by clicking on a listed Operator, Well Name,
Contractor Name, Rig Number, Spud Date, or RR (Rig Release Date). This screen provides
information pertinent to the well.

This page may also display a drilling curve that compares both the actual well and the
associated well plan. Numerous reports may also be viewed from this screen depending on
the status of the well.

Drilling Recorder From & To: Enables date selection for the Drilling Recorder report. This
field is a drop-down list of specific dates to choose from.
Resolution: Enables resolution selection of 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 45, 60, or 120 second
increments.
Chart By: Enables selection to chart by time or depth.
Print: Prints a PDF of the drilling curve.

Tour Sheet and Payroll

HTML, PDF or ASCII: Enables selection of a specific format type to view the Tour Sheet in.
If HTML is selected, the Tour Sheet may be viewed in a web-based format.
If PDF is selected, the Tour Sheet may be viewed or downloaded in PDF format. Make sure
Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 is available to view the Tour Sheet in this format.
If ASCII (Tour Sheet only) is selected, the Tour Sheet may be viewed or downloaded in text
format (CAODC standard format) through a text editor. It may also be saved. This format is
useful for importing information into Excel or other programs.
From/To Date: Drop-down lists that enable the selection of specific date(s) for a report(s) to
be based on.
Well Reports: Enables selection of specific report type to view from a drop-down list of
options. This list of reports may change, depending on the available information for the well.

The following combination of reports may be available:

Activity Details Report

Bit Record Report

Deviation Survey Report

Mud Record Report

Time Summary Report

Save Data to Disk: Enables saving of the Drilling Recorder report to anywhere on the hard
drive or floppy disk. Selecting this button will open a Save to Disk page.

Save to Disk
The Save to Disk page allows you to save the report to your hard drive or open a streaming
version of it.

The following information should be specified.

Export By: Depth or Time

File Format: ASCII (text file) or LAS (Log ASCII Standard text file)

Header Row: Yes or No

Channels: Choose which channels to include in the saved file. To select multiple items,
press Ctrl-click for individual items or Shift-click for several in a row.
>: Move selected items from Available Wells to Selected Wells
>>: Move all items from Available Wells to Selected Wells
<<: Move all items from Selected Wells to Available Wells
<: Move selected items from Selected Wells to Available Wells

Interval: Any nominal value can be entered in feet here.


e.g. 0.2 m = .66 ft, 0.5 m = 1.64 ft, 1 m = 3.28 ft

Range: From (start) depth through To (end) depth.

Save to Disk: Click Save to Disk. WellDataTM will generate the files. When completed, click
Open Data Now. Follow the prompt to view the report first or save it to the hard drive.

When Well is selected from the main navigation menu, the Search and Update options
become available.

Search
Use the Search link on the Well Menu to access the Search screen. All security permission
levels may use this function.

The Search screen enables a search for well and well plan information based on specific
criteria entered. A search for all wells may also be selected.

Search: Once satisfied with the criteria chosen for the search, click Search, which will take
you to Well Search Results Screen.

Well Search Results


Use the search link on the search screen to view the Well Search Results. All security
permission levels may use this function.

The Well Search Results screen enables viewing of the wells that were searched for based
on the criteria entered on the Search page.

From this page, link to the Well Summary page by selecting the operator name associated
with the well to be viewed.
Operator, Location, Contractor, Rig, Spud, Release, TD
These buttons enable the data to be to sorted by their respective names. When these buttons
are selected once, the information will be shown in ascending order. When selected a second
time, the information will be shown in descending order.

Well Summary
Use the operator name on the Search Results screen to gain access to the Well Summary.
All security permission levels may use this function.

Well Summary enables the user to view a more detailed description of the well selected from
the Home Page or Well Search Results screen. It provides information on the operator,
location and name of the well along with date and depth information pertinent to the well.
This page may also display a drilling curve comparing the actual well and the associated well
plan. The well plan may also be available using the View Well Plan button on this screen if a
well plan exists for the selected well. For more information see "Well Summary" on page 12.

Update
Use the Well link on the main navigation menu to gain access to Update Well. Appropriate
security permissions are needed to use this function.

Update Well enables the user to update well data that has been previously created. Prior to
entering this page, search for the specific well to update. Select it from the Well Search
Results table that is generated when searching for a specific well.

Cancel: To make no changes to the well information, click Cancel.


Update Well: Once satisfied with the changes to the well information, click Update Well. This
will update the database with the changes and return you to the Well Menu.

The Calculations screen allows the quick and easy calculation of Pipe Data, Coiled Tubing
Properties, and Stuck/Free Point.
Click the Calculations link on the navigation menu to view the Calculations screen. All
security permission levels may use this function.

Home Page Preferences
Use the Options link on the navigation menu to gain access to Home Page Preferences.
Appropriate security permissions are needed to use this function.

Home Page Preferences enables customizing which wells to view from the Home Page of
the application. It allows the selecting of all wells, active wells, or individual selection of which
wells to view.

All Wells: This field enables all wells to be shown on the Home Page.
Active Wells: This field enables only active wells to be shown on the Home Page.
Cancel: To make no changes to the Home Page Preferences, click Cancel. This button will
open the Options Menu.
Update: If satisfied with the changes, click Update. This will update the database with the
changes.

Search
Use the Home Page Preferences link under Options on the navigation menu to gain access to
Home Page Preferences Search List. All security permission levels may use this function.

The Home Page Preferences Search List enables the user to choose which specific wells that
they currently view on the Home Page. This page also allows you to edit these preferences by
selecting or de-selecting which wells you would like to view.

Operator, Location, Contractor, Rig, Spud, Release, TD


These buttons enable the data to be to sorted by their respective names. When these buttons
are selected once, the information will be shown in ascending order. When selected a second
time, the information will be shown in descending order.
Select: This field enables you to select or de-select each well that will be viewable on the
Home Page. If the box at the end of each row is checked, then the associated well will be
shown. If the box is not checked, then the associated well will not be shown.
Save: Once satisfied with the changes to the Home Page Preferences, click Save. This will
update the database with the changes and return the user to the Home Page.
Cancel: To make no changes to the Home Page Preferences search list, click Cancel. This
will open the Home Page Preferences screen.

Export Preferences
Use the Options link on the main navigation menu to gain access to Export Preferences. All
security permission levels may use this function.

Export Preferences enables the selection of how reports are exported from WellData.net.

Default WellDataTM TX Tour Sheet Settings, Report, Format: These fields are required for
export settings.
Method: This field chooses whether reports are emailed or transferred via WellData TX.
Export Settings by Well: Enables choosing export settings for individual wells.
Save: Saves the current settings as the default for exported reports.
Cancel: To make no changes to the Home Page Preferences Search List, click Cancel. This
will open the Home Page Preferences screen.
Delete All: Deletes all default export settings.
Delete: Deletes current default export setting.

Export Settings by Well Screen


The Export Settings by Well button is located on the Export Preferences screen
which can be accessed by selecting Options from the main navigation menu.
Export Settings by Well enables the selection of export settings for individual wells.

Available Wells: Choose which wells are included in the export settings. To select multiple
items, press Ctrl-click for individual items or Shift-click for several in a row.
Default WellData TX Tour Sheet Settings, Report, Format: These fields are required for
export settings.
Method: This field chooses whether reports are emailed or transferred via WellData TX.
Export Default Settings: Enables choosing export settings for default use.
Save: Saves the current settings as the default for exported reports.
Cancel: To make no any changes to the Home Page Preferences Search List, click Cancel.
This will open the Home Page Preferences screen.
Delete All: Deletes all default export settings.

Change Password
Use the Account link on the navigation menu to gain access to Change Password. All
security permission levels may use this function.

Change Password enables the user to change the current password at any time. The current
must be known password in order to change it. If the current password has been forgotten,
please contact a WellDataTM System Administrator for assistance.
WellData uses your password as a way to protect your information. Please keep your
password confidential.

Old Password: This field identifies the current password. old password is case-sensitive,
which means RSMITH100, Rsmith100, and rsmith100 are not the same. Maximum Length: 10
characters.
New Password: This field identifies the new password. The new password is case-sensitive,
which means that RSMITH100, RSmith100, and rsmith100 are not the same. The New
Password must be different than the current password. A password may contain alpha and/or
numeric characters. It may not contain any special characters. Maximum Length: 10
characters.
Retype New Password: This field is used for validation purposes. Type the same password in
this field as in the new password field. Maximum Length: 10 characters.
Save: This button saves the new password.
Exit: If the password should not change, clicking Exit will return the user to the Home Page.

Set PDF Settings


Use the Account link on the main navigation menu to gain access to Set PDF Settings. All
security permission levels may use this function.

Set PDF Settings enables setting the default layout for paper size used to print tour sheets.

Paper Size, Number of Pages: Choose between the options listed in these fields to select the
changes to be made.
Save: This button enables the changing of the current password.
Exit: To not change the password, clicking Exit will open the Home Page.

The Administration Menu Screen allows the user to Create New Users, View and Update
Users, Grant Permission to Other Users, and create a Daily Import Check List.

Create New User


Use the Administer link on the navigation menu to gain access to Create New User.
Appropriate security permissions are needed to use this function.

Create New User enables the entering of information to insert a new user that will begin using
the WellDataTM application.

Login Name: This field enables entering of the login name for the new user. This is a required
field. Maximum Length: 10 characters.
Password: This field enables entering of the new users password. Passwords are casesensitive, which means that RSMITH100, RSmith100, and rsmith100 are not the same. This is
a required field. Maximum Length: 10 characters.
Confirm Password: This field is used for validation purposes. Type the same password in this
field as you did in Password. This is a required field.
Email Address: This field enables the entering of the email address of the new user. This is a
required field. Maximum Length: 30 characters.
User Status: This field enables entering of whether or not the user being created is an Active
or Inactive user. If this user should be able to use the WellData application immediately, select
Active. If ever this user should not be able to access the application, this option needs to be set
to Inactive.
User Type: This field identifies that the user being created will only have user type privileges
as opposed to administrative privileges.
First Name, Last Name, Telephone Number: These fields are used to enter the rest of the
required information of the user.
Group Name: This field identifies the group name of the group selected that the new user
being created will belong to.
Group Type: This field identifies the group type of the group selected that the new user being
created will belong to (i.e. Contractor, Operator or Other).
Auto Update New Wells: This field enables selection of whether or not new wells created on
WellData will automatically be added to this users Home Page.

Permissions Table
No Access: This column, if selected, prevents a particular user from having any access to the
corresponding function. This means they will not be able to view, edit or update that function.
Read: This column, if selected, allows a particular user read access to the corresponding
function. This means they can view the function, but will be unable to edit or update it.
Update: This column, if selected, allows that particular user full access to the corresponding
function, including the ability to view, edit and update that function.
**NOTE: The permissions table will automatically default to the permission values allowed to the
group to which the user currently belongs. These values may only be changed if the group
currently has permission to the function to be changed.
Save: When satisfied with the changes to the users permissions, click Save. This will update
the database with the changes.
Reset: Clears all entries in the form and return each field to its original default state.
Exit: If no changes are to be made, click Exit. This will open the Administration Menu.

View/Update User
Use the Administer link on the navigation menu to gain access to View / Update User table.
Appropriate security permissions are needed to use this function.

View/Update User enables the viewing of general user information. The users viewed will be
those that are members of the group selected on the View/Update Users Menu.

Access the User Information page by selecting the Login Name of the user to modify.
Clicking the View/Update link on the right will let you view all wells and/or rigs that the group
has access to. Set permissions on the WellData application for each user selected.
Login Name, Users Name, Primary Group, User Type, User Status, Group Type

Wells / Rigs: This field is a direct link to either the View / Update Well Permissions or the
View / Update Rig Permissions depending on the group the selected user belongs to. View
and modify the well or rig permissions for the selected user here.
Exit: If this user information is not needed, click Exit. This will open the Administration Menu.

View/Update Well Permissions


Use the Administer link on the main navigation menu to gain access to View / Update Users
Menu. Appropriate security permissions are needed to use this function.

The View/Update links under the Wells/Rigs field enables selection of which wells the
selected user has permission to. The wells the user has permissions to will be shown on the
Home Page of the application.

Operator, Well Name, Location, Contractor, Rig Number


These buttons enable the data to be to sorted by their respective names. When these buttons
are selected once, the information will be shown in ascending order. When selected a second
time, the information will be shown in descending order.
The Current Wells section of this page shows all the wells that the users group currently has
access to. The Other Wells section contains wells that the group currently does not have
access to.
All/None: This button enables you to select all wells that the user should have permission to.
When this button is selected once, all wells will be selected and the button label will change to
None. When selected a second time, no wells will be selected and the button label will change
to All.
Permission End Date: This field enables entering of a specific date that the users permission
for the associated well will end. This must be in the format of YYYY-MM-DD.
Permission: This field enables selection of whether or not the selected user will have
permission to the associated well. If this field is checked, the associated well will be shown on
the users Home Page of the application. If this field is not checked, it will not be shown.
Save: When satisfied with the changes to the users permissions, click Save. This will update
the database with the changes.
Reset: This button will clear out all entries entered into the form and return each field to its
original default state.
Exit: If no changes are to be made, click Exit. This will open the Administration Menu.

View/Update Other Users


Use the Administer link on the main navigation menu to gain access to View / Update Other
Users Table. Appropriate security permissions are needed to use this function.

View / Update Other Users enables viewing general user information of other users that
belong to the operator group within the WellData application. Select View / Update Other
Users on the View / Update Users menu to gain access to this page.
From this page, access to the View / Update link under Wells/Rigs to view all wells that the
selected user may have access to. This enables setting permissions on the WellData
application for each user selected.
Login Name, Users name, Primary Group, Wells/Rigs
These buttons enable you to sort the user information by their respective names. When these
buttons are selected once, the information will be shown in descending order. When selected a
second time, the information will be shown in ascending order.
Wells / Rigs: This field is a direct link to the View / Update Well Permissions page of the
application. Here you are able to view and modify the well permissions for the selected user.
Exit: To not wish to view this user information, click Exit, opening the Administration Menu.

Grant Permission To Other Users


Use the Administer link on the main navigation menu to gain access to Grant Permission to
Other Users. Appropriate security permissions are needed to use this function.

Grant Permission to Other Users enables specific users (users that do not belong to your
group) to be selected and to allow them access to the wells. Begin by selecting the group that
the user is in, and clicking Search. If the users group is unknown, choose Select All, and click
Search.
Following this, access the View / Update Well Permissions page by selecting the login name
of the user to update. This link enables editing of the well permissions for the associated user.

Permissions. Appropriate security permissions are needed to use this function.

View / Update Well Permissions enables selection of which wells the user previously selected
from the View / Update User table should have permission to. The wells the user has
permissions to will be shown on the Home Page of the application.
The Current Wells section of this page shows all the wells that the selected user currently has
access to. The Other Wells section contains wells that the user currently does not have
access to.
For more information, see "View/Update Well Permissions" on page 32.

Daily Import Check List


Use the Administer link on the navigation menu to gain access to Daily Import Check List.
Appropriate security permissions are needed to use this function.

The Daily Import Check List enables viewing of the Tour Sheets and / or Morning Reports
that have been imported into the WellData application. Select which type of report and other
criteria that the check list will be based on.
The list may be viewed either on-screen or as a downloaded file to be viewed at a later time.
Adobe Acrobat Reader should be installed on the computer to view the file.

Tour Sheets, Morning Reports, Drilling Recorder


These fields enable viewing of the selected reports that are currently imported into the
WellData application.
Contractor: This lets you view reports sent for a specific contractor.
Month / Year: This field enables entering of a specific month and year for the check list to be
based on. This will show all imports for Tour Sheets, Morning Reports and Drilling
Recorders that occurred in a specific month.
Go: Once satisfied with the criteria that chosen, click Go. This will generate a message asking
whether to view the list on-line or download the file to your computer to view at a later time.
Exit: To not view the Check List and go back to the Administration Menu, click Exit.

9: Contact
Contact Form
Use the Contact link on the main navigation menu to gain access to Contact Menu. All
security permission levels may use this function.

The Contact Menu enables direct contact with the WellDataTM team within the WellData
application via email. This form allows for the entry of personal information, as well as a
comment section for a more detailed description of the question or concern.

Your Name, Email


These two fields are required entries.
Preference for Contact?: This area enables selection of the preferred method of contact.
When choosing a contact method, ensure that the applicable contact information is entered
into the form (i.e. Preference by Phone you must enter a phone number into the form).
Urgent Request: This area enables you to send this contact email with an urgent request
attached to it. This will ensure prompt action regarding your question or concern.
Send: Once all contact information has been entered, click Send. This will automatically send
the email request to the correct WellData Team member. If filled in correctly the application will
show a verification message that the message has been sent.
Clear: This button clears out all entries that are currently on the contact form.
