On the May 4, 2010 Election Ballot there will be a 0.4 mill tax levy for 5 years to
support OSU Extension Van Wert County which includes programming in the areas
of 4-H Youth Development, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family Consumer
Sciences, and Community Development.
Why is a levy necessary?
OSU Extension Van Wert County and 4-H are in jeopardy of losing local matching support, as has
happened in neighboring Allen and Paulding Counties. Locally, this is due to the Van Wert County se-
vere county budget short fall for 2010. The Van Wert County Commissioners have long been excellent
supporters of Extension, but will have to make cuts to balance the budget.

What happens if the levy fails?

All programs conducted by OSU Extension Van Wert County, including 4-H will be eliminated or
severely reduced. There must be local funding to continue receiving Extension programming.
Farm Application
Certification & Training Can the funds collected from this levy be used for other purposes?
No. By law, funds collected from this levy can only be used for OSU Extension programming in Van
Wert County. These funds will not go into the County Commissioner’s general fund. All the funds
collected by the levy must go directly to and be used only by OSU Extension Van Wert County. The
dollars will be spent LOCALLY.

How much will this levy provide in funding to the OSU Extension Office?
The Auditor’s office has given us an approximate figure of $190,442.

Is this more than Extension needs?

Compared to past dollars received from the county commissioners, this is more, but the OSU Exten-
sion office has not been fully staffed in the area of 4-H. We are unable to hire permanent 4-H staff for
county 4-H programs. The Van Wert County office has been able to raise enough dollars through the
Van Wert County Foundation to fund a 4-H Program Assistant, but this is a temporary solution. A levy
will provide stable funding for all OSU Extension programs.
Senior Nutrition Training
Who decides what the levy money is used for?
The Van Wert County Extension Director, the Van Wert County program Extension Educators, the
county Extension Advisory Committee (made up of Van Wert County citizens), and the Van Wert
County citizens all work together to decide the needs of Van Wert County. The needs of our county
as well as research available establish programming and where dollars are to be spent. The more dol-
lars available the more programming Extension is able to provide to a county.

Will any of this money support the OSU Extension Economic Development Office?
No. OSU Extension Economic Development is financed separately.
Master Gardner
Workshops
What is being done currently to cut/save dollars in the Extension Office?
Operating expenses are continuing to be cut to minimums as much as possible without reducing ser-
vices. A 4-H Program Assistant staff position has been filled on a temporary arrangement.

Vote Yes! May 4
