26

The Study Of Social Media Platforms And Their Impact On Student Engagement

Hypothesis Testing
H1 There is no significant relationship between social media platforms and education sector.
From the survey that was conducted, all the respondents i.e. students (total 112 respondents) use
social media platforms for education. This shows that social media platforms are very much
needed in education sector.
In todays world all schools and colleges have gone digital. They either have their own websites
or have a facebook page and so on. Since majority of students and children have access to
internet technology, it is very important for educational institutions to go online.
Students use social media platforms in order to share course material, uploading assignment and
exercise, tutorial space and they use it as a discussion space for academic matters and ideas.
Through online social media platforms like facebook, youtube, linkedin, whatsapp, etc. students
are no longer restricted to learning only their respective courses but they can also learn and gain
knowledge about other subjects too.
Hence it is proved that there is significant relationship between social media platforms and
education sector.

H2 - Positive factors of social media platforms have significant impact on student engagement.
From the survey that was conducted, majority of the students (111/112 respondents) said that
social media platforms is very useful for them in education. This shows that positive factors of
social media platforms do have an impact on students.
Majority of the students said that they take the use of social media platforms in information
sharing and knowledge gaining as a two way process rather than a one way process. Two way
process is seeking information and understanding rather than seeking information and not
understanding.
Respondents have also said that social media platforms is easy to access, they get variety of
information and more knowledge.
27

The Study Of Social Media Platforms And Their Impact On Student Engagement

Hence it is proved that positive factors of social media platforms have significant impact on
student engagement.

H3 - Negative factors of social media platforms have significant impact on student engagement.
From the survey that was conducted only one respondent (1/112) said that social media platforms
is not useful for education.
Sometimes students while using social media platforms for educational purposes may use it in a
negative way (eg. on youtube watching irrelevant videos, on facebook checking out friends
posts, on whatsapp chatting with friends). These negative things affects students performance in
academics. Also since students have easy access to social media through mobile phones and
tablets, parents are not aware about their childrens activities on social media sites.
This shows that social media platforms can have a negative impact on students though majority
of the students have said it is very useful.
Hence it is proved that negative factors of social media platforms have significant impact on
student engagement.

H4 - There is demand of educational courses online.

From the survey that was conducted, all the respondents (i.e. 112/112) said that they use internet
social media platforms for education.
The number of subscribers to various pages on social networking sites are increasing rapidly
with fast and easy access of the internet. Social media platforms are being used not only by
youngsters but different generations use them for different purposes.
Correspondence courses are available to students online to gain knowledge on the subjects they
wish to learn. These platforms can be used to learn if one doesnt wish to get a certified degree
and just want to learn to increase ones knowledge.

28

The Study Of Social Media Platforms And Their Impact On Student Engagement

Now days there are various institutes offering online courses, where in learning is through
prerecorded videos and notes. Some institutions also put their notes online for students to have
better access. Even some schools and colleges are using videos to teach students in class.
Hence, there is a demand for educational courses in online.

29

The Study Of Social Media Platforms And Their Impact On Student Engagement

Conclusion
Social Networking Platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Whatsapp, Linkedin etc. are
becoming more and more popular and have become part of daily life for an increasing number of
people. Because of their attractive features, young people are attracted to Social Networking
sites. The Study reveals that, Youtube and Facebook are the most popular platforms among the
youth; it provides individuals with a way of maintaining and Strengthening social ties which can
be beneficial to both social and academic settings. These same sites , however also badly affects
their privacy, safety, focus of attention to study , physical as well as mental health. So it is
strongly recommended to check students activities on Social Networks and also minimize the
use of Social Networking Platforms for the benefits of the students community. To minimize the
negative effect of Social Network, it is vitally important to educate our students on healthy use of
information and communication technology as well as providing them a healthy environment.
Parents may also be suggested to spend as much time to their wards in leisure period , maintain a
friendly relation and try to meet their queries so far as possible in order that their child might not
get much be habituated or addicted towards social networking platforms.

The Study Of Social Media Platforms And Their Impact On Student Engagement

Suggestions and Strategies

All institutions i.e. universities, colleges and schools should have their own page on
different online platforms as well as their own website. This will help students, professors

and parents have easy access to the various courses, activities, programmes etc.
Institutes should appoint a team from within the college to regularly update the websites
and pages on day to day basis. This will help students be aware of the latest

developments.
Institutions should encourage students and professors to access online platforms. They
should influence young people more because they find it easier to access online

platforms.
Students while using online platforms for education should not use it for negative
purposes like chatting with friends, looking at friends facebook posts, watching irrelevant

videos on youtube etc.

Colleges should have free wifi services for students and faculties so that they can have
better access to social networking sites but at the same time irrelevant sites should be

blocked.
Institutions should obtain written authorization before using copyrighted materials. Since
social media is easily accessible to all, if not done so, the institution can face legal

problems.
Students should not rely on the accessibility of information on social media specifically
and the web in general to provide answers. This can reduce focus on learning and
retaining information.

The more time students spend on social sites, the less time they spend socializing in
person. Students should also visit their friends houses in order to exchange and share
notes. This helps in socializing.

Students who attempt to multi-task, checking social media sites while studying, show
reduced academic performance. They should concentrate on the task at hand and avoid
distractions that are brought by Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, etc

The Study Of Social Media Platforms And Their Impact On Student Engagement

Scope of the Study

Some marketers believe that social media is just another passing fad in the world of online
interactive marketing activities. However, a rising number of researchers have found evidence
that social media marketing is the next big marketing phenomenon. What we are seeing today is
just the tip of the iceberg and what will follow will be no less than a great avalanche.
The potential scope for Social Media in India is huge as it is the world's10th largest economy (in terms of GDP
nominal as per IMF-2012) and also has world's 2nd largest population. In terms of education, different
institutes and universities in west have made strong presence on different social media platforms. The same can be
done in India also as more and more students now use internet and social media for information as compared to
few years ago. This research can be used by universities, colleges and schools to understand how to use social
media platforms in education and also use different recommendations on how to improve the same.

Limitations of the Research

Respondents were not willing to provide accurate, honest answers

Respondents were not very comfortable providing answers relating to age and income.
Some respondents were not fully aware of their reasons for giving answers because of

lack of memory on the subject, or even boredom.

The response rate was very low.
Data errors due to question non-responses existed. The number of respondents who chose
to respond to survey questions was different from those who chose not to respond, thus

creating bias.
Survey method was also very time consuming.
There is no way to tell how truthful a respondent is being
The respondent may be forgetful or not thinking within the full context of the situation

Managerial Implications
Educators who want to use social media in their academic courses to promote student learning
should be prepared to support students and be active participants in the collaborative learning
community. Assuming that students already know how to use social media may disadvantage
those students who may need closer supervision and guidance. Furthermore, educators need to
recognize the potential for distractions and overstimulation that is associated with certain types
of social media. Other complications that should be planned for include student access to
technology, privacy issues, cyber-plagiarism, and cyber-bullying.
While there is evidence that social media enhances student learning, future research needs to
build on this finding, specifically addressing assessments of social media use in particular
classrooms (i.e. science, math, and language arts). Currently, there is little research to show
whether social media use varies based on course content type. Researchers should also
investigate best practices for educators in how to effectively incorporate social media into the
classroom.
This research can be used by corporates who wish to venture in the education sector. They can
look into the suggestions and recommendations on how to use social media in a positive way for
the benefit of students. They can also look into the various social media platforms available to
them.

Future of Research Work

The educational benefits of social media are obvious; children are motivated to communicate
through the written language, the potential for communicating with peers from other countries
offers a multitude of learning opportunities and the ability for students to share their thoughts
and ideas on a particular subject or topic area. However, there are of course associated dangers.
In 2005 the European Union launched an eTwinning project for schools to encourage crosscultural exchanges of knowledge, foster students intercultural awareness, and improve their
communication skills, using ICT. More than 13,000 schools got involved in the first year alone.
The benefit of learning via collaboration with other students internationally is unquestionable,
but obviously engaging with people online comes with its warnings. In the school environment
teachers have a duty of care and therefore working through a secure IT system is vital. Good
social media platforms designed for schools should have twinningas a core feature, to enable
teachers to select schools from a pre approved list, based on location and any topics they may be
working on. Classes can then twin with other schools for a vibrant, engaging and highly
educational learning activity.
In todays world, social media has truly become the new currency for communication. However,
it is important to know that Facebooks minimum age, as per their license agreement is 13 and
for a very good reason. A survey carried out by Opinium last year highlighted the fact that more
than half of children use social media by the age of 10 years and people they didnt know had
messaged 43 percent of these!
So while we could conclude that the best way forward is to increase the restrictions on under age
use of social media, when we consider the benefits of this 21st century communication system, it
has to be better to educate children into the safe use of social media rather than cut them off.
It is critical to expose elementary children to what is going to be a big part of their lives. As so
many of our client schools stress, children are engaged with social media whether they should be
doing it or not and therefore schools are, to a certain extent, increasingly responsible for the
education of their students on social media.

Schools may believe that responsibility for the appropriate use of social media lies with parents.
However, another report found that while a third of nine to 19 year olds who use the Internet
report having received unwanted sexual comments, only seven percent of parents stated that their
child would have received such comments.
There is mounting adoption of technology in schools, but are they ready for it and the associated
dangers? When we have school districts with children four and five years of age being given
tablets to use where the teacher has minimal visibility of their activities, it is vital that we teach
children the fundamental skills early. They certainly play with it and enjoy posting and receiving
information but few have the fundamental skills, the ABC, 123s that as adults, we take for
granted.
An important part of educating children today is therefore to give them a system that includes a
complete appreciation of using social media effectively and ethically. At one school using such a
system, a boy sent a hurtful message to another girl in the class. Because of the teachers
dashboard, all messages could be seen so the children were protected. The teacher took the boy
aside to ask him why hed done this and how he thought it would make his classmate feel? He
felt bad and learned a harsh lesson. Without naming names, the children in the class were told
about the incident and it was discussed: a very real opportunity to teach the children about the
correct use of social media.
If we dont teach children social media skills, then we simply look to compound issues that we
already have.
Social media is an increasingly important part of students lives, so it is important to educate
them on the benefits, and risks. Furthermore, social media can be an exciting way to encourage
learning. Step into the engaging and interactive world of social media and global content sharing
by investing in the available cross-curricular, safe and controlled social media environments.
And through this, educate your students and empower them to become active global citizens.
