Installation Guide for Gasketed Integral Bell PVC Pressure Pipe

This installation guide has been developed by North
American Pipe Corporation for use as a field installation
guide. General information regarding the correct installation
of PVC pressure pipe and assembly of integral bell gasketed
joints is included.
For more detailed technical information, refer to American
Water Works Association C605, Underground Installation of
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Pressure Pipe and Fittings for
Water. This installation guide outlines design and
construction practices. The statements contained in this
installation guide are those of North American Pipe
Corporation and are not warranties, nor are they intended to
be warranties.

RECEIVING
When a load of pipe arrives at a job site, it is your
responsibility to check it thoroughly. If possible, inspect each
piece for damage. Check quantities against the shipping list.
Note missing or damaged items on bill of lading. Set aside
any damaged items and notify the shipper.

UNLOADING
It is also your responsibility to unload the shipment. DO IT
WITH REASONABLE CARE. Careless unloading can result in
damaged product or personal injury.

TRENCHING
Clean trenches save time and money. Dont let the
excavated material block sidewalks, drive or utility outlets.
Follow all safety rules and regulations. Protect workers with
sheeting and trench boxes in hazardous areas and slope walls
in dry soils. When sheeting or trench box is moved, make
sure the pipe is not moved and the side support material is
not disturbed.

WIDTH OF TRENCH
The width of the top of the trench will be determined by
local conditions. At the pipe zone, the trench width should
be kept to a practical minimum.
The minimum clear width of the trench measured at the
springline of the pipe is generally specified at least one foot
greater than the outside diameter of the pipe to enable
backfill material to be installed in the haunching area. Where
embedment compaction is required, the trench shall be wide
enough to accommodate the compaction equipment. If
minimum trench width is exceeded, and embedment
compaction is required, pipe zone haunching should be
compacted to a point at least one pipe diameter from the
pipe on both sides of the pipe.

DEPTH OF TRENCH

Use a fork-lift or front-end loader with fork attachment, if

available. Ensure the fork attachment is long enough to
support the bundles. When unloading by hand, remove one
piece at a time, and block the shipment to keep pipe from
rolling off the truck.

For water distribution and transmission lines, pipe should be

buried so that the top of the pipe is at least 6 inches (150
mm) below the deepest recorded penetration of frost.
Where surface loads will be encountered and where frost is
not a problem, the minimum height of cover over the crown
of the pipe is 12 inches (300 mm).

STORAGE

THE BOTTOM OF THE TRENCH

If you can unload the shipment in unit packages, the pipe will
be easier to store. Stack it on reasonably level ground. If you
unload one piece at a time, place the pipe bevel to bell.
Never stack over eight feet in height. Dont stack the pipe
next to heat sources such as boilers, steam lines, electrical
equipment or engine exhausts. Gaskets should also be
protected from heat, oil and grease.

The objective of bedding is to provide a continuous support

for the pipe at the required line and grade. Frozen material
should not be used to support or bed the pipe. At least 4
inches (100 mm) of bedding material should be placed under
the pipe if rocky conditions exist. The bedding may or may
not be compacted, but in any event, the projecting bells of
the pipe should be properly relieved in the trench bottom so
that the entire pipe is evenly supported by the bedding.
Where the trench bottom is unstable (organic material, or
quick sand or similar material), the trench bottom should
be over-excavated and brought back to grade with approved
material.

HANDLING
DO NOT DROP THE PIPE. String pipe close to the trench with
the bell ends pointing in the direction of work progress to
save extra effort. Be particularly careful in very cold
weather. The following table provides approximate weights
only and is provided for use as a guide in selection of
handling equipment.

Rev: 10/2014

Installation Guide for Gasketed Integral Bell PVC Pressure Pipe

LOWERING THE PIPE INTO THE TRENCH
Place the pipe and fittings into the trench using ropes and
skids, slings on the backhoe bucket, or by hand. Do not
throw the pipe or fittings into the trench or allow any part of
the pipe to take an unrestrained fall onto the trench bottom.
At this point, the pipe and other accessories are in a good
position for final inspection. Ensure there are no damaged
materials before assembly begins.

FIELD CUTTING
PVC pipe can be easily cut with a hacksaw or power- driven
abrasive disc. Be sure you make a square cut. Bevel the end
with a beveling tool, wood rasp or power sander to the same
angle as provided on the factory-finished pipe. Remark the
insertion line on the spigot using a factory marked spigot as a
guide.

PRE-ASSEMBLY

Remove all dirt and other foreign material from the bell
interior and spigot exterior that could prevent an effective
seal between the bell and spigot. Carefully clean the gasket
and groove area behind the gasket. Check each gasket to
ensure that it is seated uniformly in the groove by running
your finger around the edge of the gasket. DO NOT REMOVE
THE GASKET FROM THE GROOVE FOR CLEANING. The gasket
is not removable and will be damaged by attempts to
remove it.

LUBRICATION

IF NECESSARY

The bar and block method is recommended as a worker is

able to feel the amount of force being used and whether
the joint goes together smoothly. Larger pipe will require
mechanical assistance to apply sufficient force to assemble
the joint. With mechanical devices, care must be taken to
insure that the spigot is NOT OVERINSERTED and that
previously assembled pipe joints are not disturbed. This is
accomplished by inserting only to the insertion line on the
spigot end. In all cases, good alignment of the pipe is
essential for proper assembly. If the pipe is misaligned,
overinserted or assembled with excessive force, the
following are possible consequences:

rolled gaskets

split bells
failure to pass acceptance testing (e.g. hydrostatic
pressure test)

damage to previously assembled joints

INSTALLING PIPE THROUGH CASINGS

When the pipeline intercepts a heavily traveled, protected or
landscaped area, it may be necessary to install the pipe
through a protective casing. There are five major
precautions to observe in the design of the casings and while
pushing the pipe through the casing. These are:

Lubricant should be applied to the bevel and exterior pipe

wall of the spigot approximately mid-way back to the
insertion line. Apply lubricant to the inside surface of the
gasket in the bell. Only use supplied or approved lubricants.

2. Install spacers and skids on the PVC pipe.

PROBLEMS

3. Minimize the friction force during the push.

If you have trouble assembling the joint, disassemble and

examine the gasket. Be sure the gasket is properly seated
and both pipe segments are in straight alignment. If the
gasket is damaged, cut off the bell, bevel the new edge, and
use a coupling to assemble the two pipe segments.
If the pipe is misaligned, over-inserted, or assembled with
excessive force, the following are possible consequences:
Rolled or torn gaskets,
Split bells,
Acceptance testing failure (e.g. hydrostatic pressure test),
Leaky joints after temperature changes or earth
movement,
Damage to previously assembled joints.

1. Select the appropriate casing size.

4. Avoid over-insertion.
5. Install a water-permeable seal at the casing ends.

CASING SIZE
The casing size should be large enough to readily
accommodate the maximum outside diameter at the pipe
bells and the projections of the supporting skids. The casing
should not be so large as to permit excessive whipping or
snaking of the PVC pipe when it is pressurized after
installation in the casing.

Rev: 10/2014

Installation Guide for Gasketed Integral Bell PVC Pressure Pipe

JOINT ASSEMBLY

Prior to joint assembly, both pipe lengths must be in straight alignment to prevent gasket tearing or rollout during insertion.
Push the lubricated spigot end into the bell beyond the gasket. Pipe spigots are marked either with one or two insertion lines
that indicate how far the spigot is to be inserted in to the bell. DO NOT OVERINSERT THE JOINT. Correct assembly of the pipe
joint is shown below.
For single insertion line products, the spigot should be pushed into the adjoining bell until the insertion line is flush with the
edge of the bell.

For dual insertion line products, the spigot should be pushed into the adjoining bell until the edge of the bell is between the
two insertion lines. One line should be hidden by the bell, and one line should still be visible.

The bar and block method of assembly is recommend as a worker is able to the feel the amount of force being used and
whether the joint slides together smoothly.
Larger pipe will require mechanical assistance to apply sufficient force to assemble the joint. With mechanical devices, care
must be taken to ensure that the spigot is NOT OVERINSERTED and that previously assembled pipe joints are not disturbed.

Installation Guide for Gasketed Integral Bell PVC Pressure Pipe

SKIDS
The pipe should not rest on the bells after installation in the
casing. Runners, or skids, should be attached to the barrel of
the pipe with steel straps for a sufficient distance along the
barrel to prevent any portion of the pipe contacting the
casing. Pipe sizes 12 inch (300 mm) and under should have
four skids arranged at 90 intervals around the pipe. Pipe
over 12 inch (300 mm) may need six skids at 60 around the
pipe at intervals adequate to ensure that no part of the barrel
or bell is in contact with the casing. To help prevent overbelling as the pipeline is pushed though the casing, place one
set of runners with their ends even with the assembly line on
the spigot end of the pipe. The wood used to make the skids
should not be creosote treated, because this material will
damage the pipe.

MECHANICAL CASING SPACERS

Mechanical pipe spacers are available to provide proper
separation between the carrier pipe and the casing. These
spacers are manufactured from polyethylene, stainless steel
or carbon steel and come complete with runners to provide
clearance for the bell spigot assemblies. The casing spacer
manufacturer should be contacted for information on the
location and number of casing spacers required.

EMBEDMENT
The use of proper embedment materials is very important to
trouble-free operation of the pipe system. Avoid using
angular rock larger than inch (20 mm) or rounded rock
larger than 1 inches (40 mm) for embedment.

BEDDING
Bedding may be used to bring the trench bottom up to grade
before the pipe is installed. Its purpose is to provide
continuous support. Where required, a maximum depth of 4
to 6 inches (100 to 150 mm) is normal.

HAUNCHING
Placement of the haunching material is the most important
factor affecting pipe performance and deflection. Proper
placement of material in the haunch reduces voids and
increases pipe support. Granular materials may be properly
placed using techniques such as shovel slicing. Place material
under the haunches and at least halfway up the pipe to
provide side support. Make sure the material is properly
compacted. CAREFUL: DONT MOVE THE PIPE. DONT
DISTURB SIDE SUPPORT WHEN MOVING SHEETING OR
TRENCH BOX.

The material placed to the sides of the pipe from the bedding
to about the springline (center line) is intended to help the
pipe support the vertical loads. The pipe stiffness and
anticipated loadings will dictate whether or not any
compaction of the haunch material is necessary.

INITIAL BACKFILL
The material placed over the crown of the pipe to a height of
6 to 12 inches (150 to 300 mm) is the initial backfill. Where it
is not otherwise specified, the initial backfill may consist of
the native material in the trench provided it is free from
large stones, not frozen, and free of debris or other organic
materials. The purpose of the initial backfill is to protect the
pipe from the final backfill.
Machine compaction of initial backfill directly over the pipe is
not desirable unless adequate cover has been provided to
protect the pipe. Adequate cover will depend on the type of
compaction equipment. For adequate cover to prevent pipe
damage or deflection, consult the project engineer.

FINAL BACKFILL
In the final backfill, avoid using rocks over 4 inches (100 mm),
clumps of frozen soil, rubble and other such material. In
most cases, the material that was originally excavated can be
used for final backfill.

COMPACTING THE BACKFILL

Compact the haunching, initial backfill and final backfill in
accordance with the job drawings. Observe the following
precautions:
1. When a self-compacting material is used, such as
crushed stone, ensure the material does not arch or
bridge beneath the haunch of the pipe. Remove such
voids by shovel slicing.
2. When compacting the material underneath and at either
side of the pipe, do not allow the tool or the machine to
strike the pipe.
3. When compaction in excess of 85% standard proctor
density is required in the haunching area, ensure that
the compacting effort does not dislodge the pipe from
the correct grade. If the compacting effort dislodges the
pipe, re-lay the pipe to the correct grade.
4. It is not necessary to compact the initial backfill directly
over the top of the pipe for the sake of the pipes
structural strength. However, it may be necessary for
the sake of roadway integrity.

immediately after the pipe has been laid, the testing may be
carried out after backfilling has been completed, but before
placement of permanent surface. In all cases, sufficient
backfill shall be placed to confine the pipe system during
testing.
The engineer shall assure that the pressure and leakage test
requirements do not exceed the design pressure of the pipe,
fittings or the specified thrust restraint capabilities at the
specified time of test.
Procedure: The following procedure is based on the
assumption that the pressure and leakage tests will be
performed at the same time. Separate tests may be made if
desired; however, if separate tests are made, the pressure
test shall be made first.
Each section of the pipeline shall be slowly filled with water

Allowable Make-Up Water: After pressurizing the line for
testing in accordance with the above table, a measurement
of allowable make-up water must be made. Make-up water
is defined as the volume of water necessary to be added to
bring the line pressure back to its initial test value. The
maximum allowable pressure drop during the testing is 5 psi
(35 kPa). It is possible that no make-up water will be
required, that is, if the pressure remains unchanged during
the test period. The make-up water volume must then be
compared to an allowable water loss as determined by the
following formula:
L = NDP / 7400
L is the allowable water loss in gallons per hour; N is the
number of joints in the length of pipeline tested; D is the
nominal diameter of the pipe in inches; and P is the average
test pressure during the hydrostatic proof test in pounds per
square inch gauge. Water loss values determined by the
above formula can be found below.

Should the make-up water volume exceed the allowable

water loss based on the formula, it is probably that the
system has a leak that must be located and repaired. The
test must be repeated after any repairs are made.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
Allowable Bending: Some changes in direction may be
accomplished without the use of elbows, sweeps or other
fittings. Controlled bending within acceptable limits can be
accommodated by PVC pipe. A general rule of thumb for the
minimum bending radius (Rb) calculation is Rb = 300 O.D. In
most cases, if bending is required, it can and should be
accomplished manually. It is not recommended to attempt
bending pipes greater than 12 (300 mm) in diameter due to
the forces required.
Joint Deflection: Changes in direction may also be
accomplished through joint deflection. Either joint deflection
or longitudinal bending may be used for changes in direction,
BUT NOT BOTH, on the same length of pipe. Maximum joint
deflection for all sizes is 1.
Thermal Effects: PVC will display a variation in physical
properties with changes in temperature. Extremely cold
temperatures result in increases in pipe stiffness and tensile
strength and decreases in impact strength. The decrease in
impact strength requires care in handling during installation
in cold temperatures.
The actual rate of expansion/contraction for PVC is 3/8 inch
per 100 feet of pipe per 10 degrees F temperature change.
Stresses caused by thermal changes are rarely ever
generated in PVC pipe due to gasketed joints absorbing any
thermal movement.
Disinfection: For information on the procedures for
disinfecting water mains, refer to AWWA C651, Disinfecting
Water Mains.
Joint Restraint Devices: Mechanical thrust restraint devices
are available which clamp to the wall of the pipe and tie back
to a mating collar on the fitting or pipe bell. It is
recommended that such devices conform to the
requirements of ASTM F1674, which specifies restraint
devices for use with PVC pipe. Contact the joint restraint
manufacturer for installation recommendations.

Having a make-up water volume below the allowable leakage

indicates a successful proof test. Very low volumes of makeup water normally do not indicate a leak, but rather just a
small increase in interior pipe volume due to radical
expansion, air entrapment, or slight movement of the thrust
restraint devices.

Installation Guide for PVC Solid Wall Sewer Pipe

This installation guide has been developed by North
American Pipe Corporation for use as a field installation
guide. General information regarding the correct installation
of PVC solid-wall sewer pipe and assembly of integral bell
gasketed joints is included.

When exposure in excess of two years to direct sunlight is

unavoidable, PVC pipe should be covered with an opaque
material while permitting adequate air circulation above and
around the pipe, as required to prevent excessive heat
accumulation.

For more detailed technical information, refer to ASTM

D2321 Standard Practice for Underground Installation of
Thermoplastic Pipe for Sewers and Other Gravity-Flow
Applications. This installation guide outlines design and
construction practices.

HANDLING

The statements contained in this installation guide are those

nor are they intended to be warranties.

TRENCHING

RECEIVING
When a load of pipe arrives at a job site, it is your
responsibility to check it thoroughly. If possible, inspect each
piece for damage. Check quantities against the shipping list.
Note that once the pipe leaves the plant, it becomes the
property of the trucker. Any damaged or missing items must
be documented on the bill of lading. Set aside any damaged
items and notify the shipper.

UNLOADING
It is also your responsibility to unload the shipment. DO IT
WITH REASONABLE CARE. Careless unloading can result in
damaged product or personal injury. PVC pipe is tough, but
dont slam it around!

DO NOT DROP THE PIPE. String pipe close to the trench with
the bell ends pointing in the direction of work progress to
save extra effort. Be particularly careful in very cold
weather.

DE-WATERING
Keep the trench as dry as possible until the pipe has been
installed and enough backfill placed to prevent the pipe from
floating. PVC pipe will readily float if not filled with water or
weighted down. The height of loose backfill material
required to prevent flotation of empty pipe is conservatively
equal to 1.5 times the pipe diameter.

FIELD CUTTING

Use a fork-lift or front-end loader with fork attachment, if

available. Ensure the fork attachment is long enough to
support the bundles. When unloading by hand, remove one
piece at a time, and block the shipment to keep pipe from
rolling off the truck.

PVC pipe can be easily cut with a hacksaw or power- driven

abrasive disc. Be sure you make a square cut. Bevel the end
with a beveling tool, wood rasp or power sander to the same
angle as provided on the factory-finished pipe. Remark the
insertion line on the spigot using a factory marked spigot as a
guide.

STORAGE

ASSEMBLY

If you can unload the shipment in unit packages, the pipe will
be easier to store. Stack it on reasonably level ground. If you
unload one piece at a time, place the pipe bevel to bell.
Never stack over eight feet in height. Dont stack the pipe
next to heat sources such as boilers, steam lines, electrical
equipment or engine exhausts. Gaskets should also be
protected from heat, oil and grease.

Remove any mud, sand or other foreign material from the

bell interior and spigot exterior that could prevent an
effective seal between the bell and spigot. Carefully clean
the gasket area. Do not remove the gasket from the bell.
Make sure the gasket is seated uniformly in the groove by
running your finger around the edge of the gasket.

Rev: 04/2012

Installation Guide for PVC Solid Wall Sewer Pipe

LUBRICATION
Lubricant should be applied to the bevel of the spigot end
and approximately mid-way back to the insertion line, and to
the gasket surface which makes contact with the spigot end.
Only use supplied or approved lubricants.

JOINT ASSEMBLY
Push lubricated end past gasket into the bell until the
insertion line on the spigot is even with the edge of the bell.
DO NOT OVERINSERT.

PROBLEMS
If you have trouble assembling the joint, disassemble and
examine the gasket. Replace if damaged. Be sure the gasket
is properly seated and both pipe lengths are in straight
alignment. Repeat assembly steps. Correct assembly is
achieved when the insertion line on the spigot is lined up
with the edge of the bell.

FOUNDATION
A foundation is required when the trench bottom is unstable.
Any foundation that will support a rigid pipe without causing
loss of grade or structural breakage will be more than
adequate for PVC pipes.

IF NECESSARY

BEDDING

The bar and block method is recommended as a worker is

able to feel the amount of force being used and whether the
joint goes together smoothly. Larger pipe will require
mechanical assistance to apply sufficient force to assemble
the joint. Such mechanical devices are available if desired.
Care must be taken to insure that the spigot is NOT
OVERINSERTED and that previously assembled pipe joints are
not disturbed. This is accomplished by inserting only to the
insertion line on the spigot end. In all cases, good alignment
of the pipe is essential for proper assembly. If the pipe is
misaligned, overinserted or assembled with excessive force,
the following are possible consequences:

Bedding may be used to bring the trench bottom up to grade

before the pipe is installed. Its purpose is to provide
continuous and uniform support. Where required, a
maximum depth of 4 to 6 inches is normal.

rolled gaskets
split bells
failure to pass acceptance testing (e.g. low-pressure air
testing and mandrel testing)
or damage to previously assembled joints

EMBEDMENT
Terms used in pipe installation are illustrated in this cross
section. The use of proper embedment materials is very
important to trouble-free operation of the pipe system.
Avoid using rocks larger than 1 inches for embedment.

HAUNCHING
Placement of the haunching material is the most important
factor affecting pipe performance and deflection. Proper
placement of material in the haunch reduces voids and
increases pipe support. Granular materials may be properly
placed using techniques such as shovel slicing. Place material
under the haunches and at least halfway up the pipe to
provide side support. Make sure the material is properly
compacted. CAREFUL: DONT MOVE THE PIPE. DONT
DISTURB SIDE SUPPORT WHEN MOVING SHEETING OR
TRENCH BOX.

INITIAL BACKFILL
Initial backfill protects the pipe from damage during the final
backfill. Machine compaction
of initial backfill directly over the pipe is not desirable unless
adequate cover has been provided to protect the pipe.
Adequate cover will depend on the type of compaction
equipment. For adequate cover to prevent pipe damage or
deflection, consult the project engineer.

Rev: 04/2012

Installation Guide for PVC Solid Wall Sewer Pipe

For a pipe under a road surface at shallow depths between 1
and 3 feet, specific embedment materials and compaction
levels are recommended. The embedment material should
be Class I (crushed rock) or Class II (clean sand and gravel) as
described in ASTM D2321. This material should be installed
from the bottom of the trench up to the bottom of the
pavement and compacted to 95 percent of proctor density.

FINAL BACKFILL
In the final backfill, avoid using rocks over 4 inches, clumps of
frozen soil, rubble and other such material. In general, the
material which was originally excavated can be used, and it
must be compacted to suit the engineer.

OVERNIGHT PRECAUTIONS
At the end of each workday, be sure that all installed pipe
ends are covered to keep dirt, debris and animals from
entering the pipe.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
Allowable Bending: Some changes in direction may be
accomplished without the use of elbows, sweeps or other
fittings. Controlled bending within acceptable limits can be
accommodated by PVC pipe. A general rule of thumb for the
minimum bending radius (Rb) calculation is Rb = 300 O.D.
Tighter bending radii may be achieved for certain products.
Block or brace pipe joints to ensure that bending of the pipe
does not result in axial deflection of the joint. Excessive axial
deflection may result in damaging stresses or leakage. In
most cases, if bending is required, it can and should be
accomplished manually.
Joint Deflection: Changes in direction may also be
accomplished through joint deflection. Either joint deflection
or longitudinal bending may be used for changes in direction,
BUT NOT BOTH, on the same length of pipe. Maximum joint
deflection for all sizes is 1
Manhole Connection: Proper manhole connections are
essential to good system performance. The following
precautions are recommended:
Insure stable foundation and bedding for the manhole
and connecting pipe to prevent shifting which could
damage connection.
Use a water stop gasket produced from elastomeric
material which prevents leakage while allowing
longitudinal pipe movement.
Use a nonshrinking or expansive type grout for making
connections of pipe and waterstop to manhole walls.

Acceptance Testing: Low pressure air testing has been an

acceptable method of insuring integrity of the installed
sewer system. Infiltration testing is an alternative method
which is accurate only when the pipe is completely under
water. Exfiltration testing can be complicated by entrapped
air. Uni-Bell PVC Pipe Association publication UNI-B-6,
Recommended Practice for Low-Pressure Air Testing of
Installed Sewer Pipe, describes testing procedures and is
available at http://www.uni-bell.org.
Thermal Effects: PVC will display a variation in physical
properties with changes in temperature. Extremely cold
temperatures result in increases in pipe stiffness and tensile
strength and decreases in impact strength. The decrease in
impact strength requires care in handling during installation
in cold temperatures.
Increases in temperature above 73.4 F result in decreases in
tensile strength and pipe stiffness and increased impact
strength. Decreases in pipe stiffness require that more care
be taken during installation to avoid excessive deflection.
Risers: Sewer risers or vertical stacks may be required in
deep sanitary sewers to minimize excavation for service
lines. Risers are generally permitted where the main sewer
line is deeper than 7 ft. (2 m).
The vertical riser pipe creates a load scenario not common in
other sewer installations. Any settlement of material
alongside the riser produces a drag-down load due to the
frictional forces at their interface. Additionally, settlement
of the lateral fitting assembly produces the same drag down
load. These loads must be mitigated or transferred
harmlessly off the stack to prevent such things as overinsertion, fittings fracture, main sewer line deflection or
misalignment, etc.
The following practices are considered appropriate for all
riser installations:
Transitions from horizontal to vertical should be smooth
and well supported. This may be accomplished with
fitting combinations, gradual bends and/or trench
geometry.
Service laterals from the main sewer should exit at an
angle no greater than 45 degrees from the horizontal.
A single joint of lateral pipe should be used for the riser
section whenever possible (up to 13 feet).
Rev: 04/2012

Installation Guide for PVC Solid Wall Sewer Pipe

In order to minimize or eliminate settlement and the

resulting loading, compaction is critical beneath the main
line sewer, elevation fitting and any horizontal portion of
the assembly (top and bottom).

Deep risers (13 ft. (4 m.) or greater) may require special

design.
Soil Migration: Where conditions are such that running or
standing water occurs in the trench, or substantial seasonal
water table changes are expected, consideration must be
given to preventing soil migration. Materials used for
underdrains, bedding or haunching should be of proper
gradation and thickness to prevent migration of material
between the underdrain, pipe embedment and native soils in
the trench below and at the sides of the pipe.
Overexcavation: Maintaining proper grade is essential to
good system performance. Where overexcavation does
occur, care must be taken that the elevation under the entire
length of the pipe is brought up, rather than at the bells only,
to insure proper support of the pipe and prevent sagging
between joints.

CHECKLIST Dont Forget!

Take all sensible precautions necessary to protect
workers and materials.
Plan ahead for fittings.
Use trench boxes for shoring in unstable conditions.
Dont disturb pipe when moving trench boxes or shoring
materials.
Properly assemble joints by inserting until the insertion
line is even with the lip of the bell.
Insure water tight seal at manhole connection.
Keep trench bottom as dry as possible.

Use a fork-lift or front-end loader with fork attachment, if
available. Ensure the fork attachment is long enough to
support the bundles. When unloading by hand, remove one
piece at a time, and block the shipment to keep pipe from
rolling off the truck.

STORAGE
If you can unload the shipment in unit packages, the pipe will
be easier to store. Stack it on reasonably level ground. If you
unload one piece at a time, place the pipe bevel to bell.
Never stack over eight feet in height. Dont stack the pipe
next to heat sources such as boilers, steam lines, electrical
equipment or engine exhausts.

HANDLING
DO NOT DROP THE PIPE. String pipe close to the trench with
the bell ends pointing in the direction of work progress to
save extra effort. Be particularly careful in very cold
weather.

For water distribution and transmission lines, pipe should be
buried so that the top of the pipe is at least 6 inches (150
mm) below the deepest recorded penetration of frost.
Where surface loads will be encountered and where frost is
not a problem, the minimum height of cover over the crown
of the pipe is 12 inches (300 mm).

THE BOTTOM OF THE TRENCH

The objective of bedding is to provide a continuous support
for the pipe at the required line and grade. Frozen material
should not be used to support or bed the pipe. At least 4
inches (100 mm) of bedding material should be placed under
the pipe if rocky conditions exist. The bedding may or may
not be compacted, the entire pipe should be evenly
supported by the bedding. Where the trench bottom is
unstable (organic material, or quick sand or similar
material), the trench bottom should be over-excavated and
brought back to grade with approved material.

Installation Guide for Solvent Welded PVC Pipe

ASSEMBLY

APPLICATION OF PRIMER AND CEMENT

Using a fine-tooth hand or power saw to cut the pipe square

with its axis. A rotary cutter specifically designed for use
with PVC pipe may be used if its use does not raise a burr or
ridge at the cut edge. Remove any burrs or ridges that might
have developed during the cutting process.

To apply the primer and cement use a natural or nylon brush

with a width that is approximately 1/2 the diameter of the
pipe. A dauber, again approximately the pipe diameter in
width may be used for pipe sizes 2 inch and smaller.

The solvent-cement joint is designed as interference fit joint.

Dry fit the joint by inserting the dry spigot into the bell.
Typically this interference develops when the spigot is
inserted to about 1/3 to 2/3 of the socket depth. If the pipe
is at the minimum tolerance and the socket is at the
maximum tolerance it is possible that the spigot will inset
fully into the socket the fit should be snug. Select a different
fitting or pipe if the fit is wobbly.
Make sure that the mating surfaces are clean by removing
any moisture, oil, dirt, or other foreign material.

BEFORE APPLICATION
Confirm that the available primer and solvent-cement are
compatible and intended for use with the material to be
joined. Keep the primer and cement containers closed when
not in use. The cement should be discarded if there is an
appreciable change in the viscosity.
Bonding of a typical solvent-cement joint develops in two
ways. The section with the interference fit the pipe and
socket fuses together. In the looser fit section the cement
bonds the surfaces. The cement softens the joint surfaces so
that fusion or bonding can take place. Primer is used to aid
in the softening process and improves the bonding and
fusion.

Apply the primer to the inside of the bell first. Use a

scrubbing motion to ensure penetration. Next apply primer
to the spigot. Be sure that both surfaces are well softened.
Without delay apply the solvent-cement to bell and to the
spigot while the surfaces are still wet with primer. At this
stage in the assembly time is very important. If the solventcement starts to harden quickly apply another light coat.
Forcefully insert the spigot into the bell until the spigot
bottoms out, turning the pipe or the fitting turn during the
process. Hold the spigot in place for approximately one
minute. This process should be performed in about 20
seconds. Take care not to disturb the joint and to allow the
joint to set for the period of time recommended by the
cement manufacturer.
A properly made joint will develop a bead of cement around
its entire perimeter. It is important to wipe away any excess
cement. In like manner do not apply cement in the bell to
pipe transition area of pipe bells, particularly with pipe wall
thicknesses of 1/8 inch or less.
Any gaps between the bell and the spigot generally indicate a
defective assembly that is due to insufficient cement or the
use of light bodied cements when standard or heavy bodied
cements should have been used. This is particularly true
with large diameter joints.

It is important to important consider the atmospheric

conditions when applying the primer and cement. With high
humidity it is important to apply the cement quickly to
minimize condensation of moisture on the cement surface.
Surface temperatures should be kept below 110 degrees F to
prevent the solvent-cement from drying before the joint can
be assembled.

COLD WEATHER NOTES

The assembly of sizes six inch and larger requires two people
to apply primer and solvent cement and assemble in a
prompt manner. A mechanical forcing device may also be
required to insert the spigot and hold it in place.

Do not warm the cement and primer with open flame or

electric heaters and attempt to prefabricate as much of the
system in a heated area. Remove all ice, snow, or other
moisture before applying the primer. It will take longer for
the solvents to evaporate in cold temperatures so allow for a
longer than normal cure time.

Primers and cements do not penetrate and soften the PVC as

quickly in cold weather (below freezing) as in warm weather.
Verify the softening by testing a scrap piece. Apply primer to
a scrap piece and wait for a few minutes. Scrape the primed
surface with a knife edge. A properly softened pipe surface
will be removed during scraping.

Installation Guide for Solvent Welded PVC Pipe

INSTALLATION
For pressurized systems, carefully place the pipe in the ditch
and snaking the pipe from side to side to allow for expansion
and contraction. The actual rate of expansion/contraction
for PVC is 3/8 inch per 100 feet of pipe per 10 degrees F
temperature change. The pipe should be brought to the
approximate operating temperature by shade backfilling or
filling with water and allowed to stand overnight to vent to
the atmosphere before pressure testing. Because of
variances in atmospheric and assembly conditions the
necessary time to cure can vary from minutes to days.
Consult the manufacturer of the primer and cement for
recommendations. Pressure tests should be limited to runs
of 5000 ft or less.

OVERNIGHT PRECAUTIONS
At the end of each workday, be sure that all installed pipe
ends are covered to keep dirt, debris and animals from
entering the pipe. Backfill is needed to avoid flotation.

For PVC foam Core products use solvent cement that meets
the requirements of ASTM DD2564 Standard Specification for
Solvent Cements for Poly(Vinyl Chloride) (PVC) Plastic Piping
Systems. Also for foam core PVC products primers may be
used to clean, soften, and dissolve the joint surfaces prior to
application of the solvent cement. The primer for foam core
should meet the requirements of ASTM 656 Standard
Specification for Primers for Use in Solvent Cement Joints of
Poly(Vinyl Chloride) (PVC) Plastic Pipe and Fittings.
Keep the primer and cement containers closed when not in
use. The cement should be discarded if there is an

UNDERGROUND INSTALLATION
For underground installations install the pipe in accordance
with the provisions of the Plumbing Code having jurisdiction.
Aggregate size should be kept to a maximum of inch for
angular and inch for rounded particles. Consult ASTM
Practice D2321 for more detailed information.

SUPPORTS AND SPACING

Support the pipe at intervals of at least four feet. Hangers or
support straps should not compress, cut, or distort the pipe
in any way. Use supports that allow free movement of the
pipe to accommodate changes in length due to temperature
variations. Support vertical piping at intervals or 10 feet or
less.

To apply the primer and cement use a natural or nylon brush

with a width that is approximately 1/2 the diameter of the
pipe. A dauber, again approximately the pipe diameter in
width may be used for pipe sizes 2 inch and smaller.

COLD WEATHER NOTES

Apply a moderate and even coating of cement to the inside

of the fitting socket. Excessive solvent cement may become
an obstruction in the pipe and prevent satisfactory joining.
Quickly apply a heavy coat of solvent cement to the outside
of the pipe. At this stage in the assembly time is very
important. If the solvent-cement starts to harden quickly
apply another light coat. Forcefully insert the spigot into the
bell until the spigot bottoms out, turning the pipe or the
fitting turn during the process. Hold the spigot in place for
approximately one minute. This process should be
performed in about 20 seconds. Take care not to disturb the
joint and to allow the joint to set for the period of time
recommended by the cement manufacturer. To avoid pushout hold the joint together until the cement starts to set.

Do not warm the cement and primer with open flame or
