Background
Professional development plays an important role in the growth of an organization. Ongoing training
programs are essential for employees to build required skill-sets and keep them engaged. A survey by
Microfinance Insights indicates that most MFIs offer training to staff at least once or twice a year and nearly
39% of them offer it more than four times per year. 1 Many MFIs offer basic in-house training for newly
joined employees to provide general information about the organization and equip staff with knowledge
about its products and services. It includes classroom training programs along with field work training as a
means to learn various delivery methodologies of the MFI.
As part of the commitment of the Microfinance Council of the Philippines, Inc. (MCPI) to provide its
members with learning activities to enhance their capacity to serve significant numbers of poor clients with
financial and non-financial services, a training of trainers on adult learning, gender sensitivity and financial
literacy will be held on April 25-29, 2016. The training will be conducted in partnership with ASKI Skills and
Knowledge Institute.
In this workshop, MFI staff and loan officers will learn more about different adult learning methods to
effectively connect with their clients. In addition, the workshop will help participants deal with gender
biases and increase their clients awareness on gender-sensitive issues. Proper and ethical treatment of
clients, regardless of gender and other perceived biases fall within the sweep of social performance and will
help MFIs shape their social performance in the realm of gender sensitivity.
The workshop is also anchored on helping build clients capacity to manage their own finances and help
them better their lives sustainably. Financial literacy informs clients directly about the known effective
approaches to managing their money. It also helps lessen the likelihood of over-indebtedness while
increasing the clients capacity to deliver wise financial decisions, ultimately enhancing the financial
performance of the MFI.
Objectives
The overall goal of the workshop is to train microfinance staff to become effective trainers on Adult Literacy,
Gender Sensitivity and Financial Literacy. By the end of the 5-day workshop, participants would be able to:
Familiarize with the concepts, methods and principles in training, techniques on facilitation and
mentoring in the context of adult literacy;
Orient participants with concepts on Gender Sensitivity and Financial Literacy;
Hold a mock-trial in conducting training on Gender Sensitivity and Financial Literacy; and
Prepare a draft training module on Gender and Financial Literacy workshop for clients.
