integrityoftheoverallassembly,afireratedsystemmustbeusedtosealthejointorgap.Therearefourprimary
configurationsofjointsasillustrated.
Thebasicstandardusedtoinvestigateproducts

thatareusedinjointsystemsisANSI/UL2079,TestsforFireResistanceofBuildingJointSystems.Thehourly
ratingsapplyonlytothecompletesystems.Individualcomponentsaredesignatedforuseinaspecificsystemto
achieveaspecifiedrating.Eachofthejointsystemsidentifiedareclassifiedasdynamic,thatis,having
movementcapabilities.
Alljointsystemsaretestedattheirmaximumjointwidth.Theratingsforthejointsystemsinstalledinwallsapply
wheneitherfaceofthewallisexposedtofire.Theratingsforjointsystemsinstalledinafloororroofapplywhen
theundersideorceilingsurfaceisexposedtofire.

Wheneveracommoditysuchaspipingorelectricalwiringmustpassthroughafireratedelement,acircularor
rectangularjointorgapisusuallycreated.Inordertomaintaintheintegrityoftheoverallassembly,afirerated
systemmustbeusedtosealthejointorgap.Afirestopsystemisaspecificconfigurationofitemsthatconsistsofa
wallorfloorassembly,anitemthatpenetratesthatwallorfloorassembly,andthematerialsdesignedtoprevent
thespreadoffirethroughtheopeningthatiscreatedaroundthepenetratingitem.Therearecurrentlythree
throughpenetration

firestopsystemsthatcanbeutilizedwithAERCONwallsandfloors.Theseareillustratedtoshowthevarious
itemsassociatedwitheachsystem.
ThebasicstandardusedtoinvestigateproductsthatareusedinthroughpenetrationsystemsisANSI/UL1479,
FireTestsofThroughPenetrationFirestops.ThisstandarddefinesthecriteriaforhourlyFandTratingsfor
firestopsystems.TheFratingcriteriaprohibitsflamepassagethroughthesystemandrequiresacceptablehose
streamtestperformance.TheTratingcriteriaprohibits
flamepassagethroughthesystemandrequiresthemaximumtemperaturerise(onthesidewhichisnotexposedto
thefireduringtesting)to325Fabovethestartingtemperatureandalsorequiresacceptablehosestreamtest
performance.Theratingsforfirestopsystemsinstalledinwallsapplywheneitherfaceofthewallisexposedto
fire.Theratingsforfirestopsystemsinstalledinafloororroofapplywhentheundersideorceilingsurfaceis
exposedtofire.
