ThefollowinginformationisapplicabletoallfireresistivedesignsdescribedinthisDirectory.Itisrecommendedthattheusersreviewthis
informationinadditiontothegeneralguidelinesprovidedforspecificmaterialsandconstructiontypes.
AuthoritiesHavingJurisdictionshouldbeconsultedbeforeconstruction.
Fireresistanceratingsapplyonlytoassembliesintheirentirety.Exceptforthoseseparatelyratedstructuralmemberssupportingtested
assemblies,individualcomponentsarenotassignedafireresistanceratingandarenotintendedtobeinterchangedbetweenassembliesbut
ratheraredesignatedforuseinaspecificdesigninorderthattheratingsofthedesignmaybeachieved.Unlessotherwisespecifiedinthe
individualdesignorcertification,attachmentstostructuralsteelhavenotbeeninvestigated.
Allratingsarebasedontheassumptionthatthestabilityofthestructuralmemberssupportingtheassemblyarenotimpairedbytheeffectsof
fire.Theextentofdamageofthetestassemblyattheratingtimeisnotacriteriafortherating.
Thespecificationsformaterialsinanassemblyareimportantdetailsinthedevelopmentoffireresistanceratings.Thosematerialsprovided
withan"*"inthedesigntextareeligibletobeproducedundertheFollowUpServiceProgramofUL.Informationidentifyingsuchmaterials
andthecertifiedcompaniesauthorizedtoprovidethematerialsarelocatedintheproductcategorysectionofthisDirectory.Theappearanceof
theULCertificationMarkontheproductistheonlymethodprovidedbyULtoidentifyproductsthathavebeenproducedunderitsFollowUp
Service.
1.MetricDimensions
Itisrecommendedthatthe"MetricGuideforFederalConstruction,"publishedbytheNationalInstituteofBuildingSciences(NIBS),be
consultedforguidanceregardingtheuseofmetricdimensionedbuildingmaterials.Thedimensionalconversionofbuildingmaterialsfromthe
inchpoundsystemtometricmayeitherbehardorsoft.
Hardconversionsaretypicallyappliedtomanufacturedproductsusedinmodularconstruction.Theseproductsincludesuspendedceiling
systems,gypsumwallboard,insulationboards,etc.Certifiedproductswhichareavailableinmetricsizesareidentifiedinthecertification
informationfortheindividualproductcategorieslocatedneartheendofthisDirectory.
Forsoftconversions,inchpounddimensionsaremathematicallyconvertedtoexactequivalentmetricvalues.Examplesofdimensionswhich
maybesoftconvertedincludeconcretethickness,depthofconcealedspaceabovesuspendedceilings,andcoatingthicknesses.
Itisrecommendedthatdimensionswhichareidentifiedasminimumormaximuminfireresistivedesignsbeinitiallysoftconvertedand,if
required,furtherconvertedtoahardmetricequivalentfollowingthemin/maxguidance.Thespacingofhangerwireandothersupportsfor
suspendedceilingswouldbeexamplesrequiringthistypeofconsideration.
2.LoadingofTestSpecimens
ANSI/UL263requirestheloadappliedtotestsamplestobebaseduponthelimitingconditionsofdesignasdeterminedbynationally
recognizedstructuraldesigncriteria.Forsomeapplications,thenationallyrecognizedstructuraldesigncriteriamaybebasedupontheAllowable
StressDesign(ASD)ortheLoadandResistanceFactorDesign(LRFD)Method.Forapplicationswherethesetwodesignmethodsareavailable,
theloadappliedtothetestsamplewasdeterminedinaccordancewiththeAllowableStressDesignMethodunlesstheratedassembly
specificallyreferencestheLoadandResistanceFactorDesignMethod.Also,unlessotherwisestated,theloadcapacityofsteelbeamsassumes
thebeamsarefabricatedfromA36steel.
ANSI/UL263permitssamplestobetestedwiththeappliedloadbeinglessthanthemaximumallowableloadasdeterminedbythelimiting
conditionsofanationallyrecognizedstructuraldesigncriteria.Theratingsforassembliesdeterminedfromtestswheretheappliedloadwas
lessthanallowedbythenationallyrecognizedstructuraldesigncriteriaareidentifiedas"RestrictedLoadCondition."Thepercentofthe
maximumload,thepercentofthemaximumstress,andthenationallyrecognizeddesigncriteriaisidentifiedinthetextdescribingthe
structuralelementofratedassemblieswitharestrictedloadcondition.Anexampleofthetextusedinanassemblywitharestrictedload
conditionandsteeljoistloadedto80%ofthemaximumallowableis:
Thedesignloadforthestructuralmemberdescribedinthisdesignshouldnot:(1)exceed80%ofthemaximumallowableload

loadratioof3:1.Aloadrestrictionneednotbeappliedforanunrestrainedconditionofanyhourlyratingnorappliedforarestrainedcondition
withahourlyratingof1hourorless.
SomefireresistivedesignsarespecifiedwithaRestrictedLoadCondition.WhenusingfireresistivedesignswithaRestrictedLoadCondition,
thefactoredresistanceofthestructuralmembersorcomponentsshouldbereducedbymultiplyingthefactoredresistancebytheLoad
RestrictedFactorspecifiedintheindividualfireresistivedesigns.
TheLoadRestrictedFactorshouldbeappliedtothefactoredresistanceofallstructuralmembersorcomponents,including,butnotlimitedto,

3.Penetrations
Penetrationsthroughalloraportionofanassemblycansignificantlyaffecttherating.Firestopsystemsdevelopedtoprotectopeningscreated
bypenetrationitemsarecoveredunderThroughpenetrationFirestopSystems(XHEZ).
4.FinishRatings
Afinishratingisestablishedforassembliescontainingcombustible(wood)supports.Thefinishratingisdefinedasthetimeatwhichthewood
studorwoodjoistreachesanaveragetemperatureriseof250Foranindividualtemperatureriseof325Fasmeasuredontheplaneofthe
woodnearestthefire.Afinishratingisnotintendedtorepresentaratingforamembraneceiling.Therequirementsforfinishratingsarenot
includedinANSI/UL263.

anexteriorapplicationofaULcertifieddesignisdesired,thelocalbuildingcodeandAuthorityHavingJurisdictionshouldbeconsultedto
ensurecompliancewithothercoderequirementsapplicabletoexterioruse.

Thesurfaceflammabilityandsmokedevelopmentcharacteristicsofcertifiedmaterialsthatmaybeusedasexposedinteriorfinishesare

Unlessotherwisespecifiedinthespecificdesign,theuseofelectricalradiantheatingpanelsinafireresistanceratedassemblyisnot
permitted.
9.CoatingMaterials
Coatingmaterialsincludeproductsidentifiedas:1)SprayappliedFireresistiveMaterialsand2)MasticandIntumescentCoatings.
Thetypeofmaterialisspecifiedineachdesign.Materialsthathavebeeninvestigatedforexteriorapplicationaresoindicatedintheindividual
designsandintheproductcategory.
Regulationsgoverningtheapplicationanduseofcoatingmaterialshavebeenpromulgatedbymanygovernmentalagencies.AuthoritiesHaving
Jurisdictionshouldbeconsultedforcurrentlocalrequirements.
Unlessspecificallydetailedintheindividualdesignsorintheproductcertificationinformation,theinteractionofdissimilarfireproofing
materialsonthesamestructuralelementorattheintersectionofstructuralmembers,andtheadherenceofoneproducttotheother,hasnot
beeninvestigatedunderfiretestconditions.
Unlessspecificallydetailedintheindividualdesignsorintheproductcertificationinformation,theimpactofgalvanizationappliedtostructural
steelmembershasnotbeeninvestigatedunderfiretestconditions.Galvanizationmayimpacttheadhesionofsprayappliedfireresistive
materialsormasticandintumescentcoatings.
SprayappliedFireresistiveMaterials
Thesurfacesonwhichthematerialistobeappliedmustbefreeofdirt,oilandloosescale.Surfacesmaybeprimedwiththeprimers/paints
coveredunderPrimersforStructuralSteel(CGJM).
Thefollowingmethodofdeterminingthebondstrengthofthesprayappliedmaterialsonlyappliestoprimersorpaintsthatarenotcovered
underCGJM.Unlessspecificallyprohibitedintheindividualdesigns,materialsidentifiedasSprayappliedFireresistiveMaterials(CHPX)may
beappliedtoprimedorsimilarlypaintedwideflangesteelshapesandpipeandtubeshapedcolumnsprovided:(A)thebeamflangewidth

OutletBoxesandFittingsCertifiedforFireResistance(CEYY)coverspresetandpostsetinsertsforuseinconcretefloorsforelectricaland
communicationconnections.Thesedeviceshavedemonstratedanabilitytobeusedinspecificassemblieswithoutreducingtheirfireresistive
ratings.Inthosefloorceilingdesignswheretheinsertsarenotspecificallyshown,penetrationstotheconcretetoppingwithelectricalinserts
mayjeopardizetheratingunlesspropercompensatingprotectionisprovided.Intheabsenceofspecificinformationforinsertsintheindividual
designs,insertsthatdonotpenetratethroughtheentirefloorandbeartheULCertificationMarkforOutletBoxesandFittingsCertifiedforFire
Resistancemaybeusedinfloorceilingdesignswhichincludefireresistivecoatingmaterialsonbothflutedandcellularfloorunitsforthe

thesamematerialandthicknessasrequiredbelowthetrenchheaderswithagradualreductioninthicknesstothatspecifiedforflutedunitsin
theindividualdesigns.Thespacingbetweeninsertsshouldbesufficientforstructuralintegrity.Thediameterofanyholesintheinsertcoverfor

NonmetallicoutletboxesinvestigatedforinstallationinfloorceilingorroofceilingassembliesarecoveredunderOutletBoxesandFittings

ThehourlyfireratingsforloadbearingwoodstudwallstestedbeforeJanuary1,2009,werederivedwithasuperimposedloadappliedtothe

Woodstudwallsmaycontainfireretardanttreatedstudsaswellasuntreatedwoodstuds.Theuseoffireretardanttreatedplywood(wood

structuralpanelinthedesign.
2.SteelStuds
Thedimensionsandgaugeofsteelstudsareminimums.Thehourlyratingsapplywhenthesteelstudsareofaheaviergaugeand/orlarger
dimensionsthanspecifiedinadesign.Thesuperimposedloadofbearingswallsutilizingsteelstudsshouldbebasedonthecapacityofthe
studsasdeterminedbythe"NorthAmericanSpecificationandCommentaryfortheDesignofColdFormedSteelStructuralMembers"(2007).
Wherelateralsupportofstuds(bymeansofstraps,channelsorsimilarsteelmembers)isrequiredinthedesign,theloadsappliedtosteel
studsshouldbebasedonthesteelbraceddesign.Theloadsbasedonsheathingbracingshouldnotbeassumed,unlessotherwisestatedinthe
design.
Theloadsappliedtosteelstudshavingayieldstresshigherthanthestatedminimumshouldbebaseduponthespecifiedminimumyieldstress
statedinthedesign.
NonloadbearingsteelstudsareproducedinaccordancewithASTMC645,"StandardSpecificationforNonstructuralSteelFramingMembers."
InaccordancewithASTMC645,theminimumflangewidthshouldbe11/4in.andtheminimumreturnlipshouldbe3/16in.Studsarealso
producedwithsteelhavingaminimumyieldstrengthof33ksi.
3.MetalThickness
Unlessotherwiseindicatedintheindividualdesigns,thefollowingminimummetalthicknesstablesapplywhereametalgaugedesignationis
stated.MetalgaugesarenolongerreferencedinASTMStandards.Itisstillanindustrypracticetospecifysteelcomponentsbygauge.Because
