Basic Statistical Procedures and How to Compute (2)

Date 12th March 2011

For practical computation with the help of software, I will

demonstrate mainly base on MS Excel, Gnumeric, Open Epi and Win PEPI
software package. You may be wonder about that why I used these
softwares (most of them are never heard in past experience and surprise
that MS Excel has that kind of statistical functions). Some of us knew
about epi-info or SPSS for statistical computing and want to know why I
dont mention these softwares. My purpose for this article is how to use
free and open source software (except MS Excel) and to avoid complicated
procedures in advance statistical software packages. (If you want to read
using these softwares like, SPSS, Epi-Info, etc. for some reason like larger
data set, please wait and read my other article of Easy Way to Compute
Statistical Analysis for Medical Professionals. I will demonstrate with MS
Excel 2007 (dont worry, older version of MS Excel also the same).
Let us begin with Students t test
Sex (M/F)

---------------------------------------------------------> BMI (kg/sqm)

(20 male and 20 females)

You may see how to input the BMI values of 40 subjects. Data will be
entering separate column name in Male and Female. The first column
named Code should be used for every time in data entry. It is not for the

computing purpose. But it may help you a lot in later time, when you want
to recheck the data.
Now you see Data in Ribbon (normally its on 5 th position of Ribbon
next to Formulas) and click, you will see like this (Data analysis button on
the edge).

Then you click Data analysis. A new window named Data Analysis
appears with a lot of statistical analysis. Choose t test (two samples). Feel
free about to choose either of one.

When you click OK, then data selection window will be appeared.

Firstly input variable 1 range. To do this press your mouse cursor

to the cell named Male and drags the cursor to end of data in that column
and release. $B$1:$C$21 will be appearing in variable 1 range. (It
means that you have been select from cell 1 of column B to cell 21 of
column B)
Then input variable 2 range. To do this press your mouse cursor to
the cell named Female and drags the cursor to end of data in that column
and release. $C$1:$C$21 will be appearing in variable 2 range. (It
means that you have been select from cell 1 of column C to cell 21 of
column C)
Since, we select Name of the Groups like Male and female in input
range, check the Labels buttons and then press ok.
The result will be appearing on new sheet including Mean and
variance for each group, t test result and p values. In this example vale of
t is -8.1367X10-15 and p value is 1 for two tails. Please try with your own
data sets.
