Laterthismonth,NASAresearchershopetoconductanexperimentthatcoulddetermineif
theforceofgravitymightsomedaybeadjusted,likethevolumeofaradio.Thespaceagency
saysthatturningdownthegravityintheimmediatevicinityofarocketwouldenablefuture
spacecrafttoroamthegalaxybyusingthetugofdistantplanetsandstars.
Scientistshavehistoricallydismissedtalkofantigravitymachinesasutternonsense.Butata
rare,closeddoorconferenceatNASA'sLewisResearchCenterinCleveland,Ohio,scientists
representingmajoruniversities,nationalweaponslaboratories,defensecontractorsandthe
corporateresearchanddevelopmentcommunitygatheredtohearadetailedaccountofthe
spaceagency'sprogressinattemptingtobuildamachinethatonceseemedbeyondthe
boundsofpossibility.
Inasurprisingdeparturefromits,longstandingpolicyofopenness,NASAdidnotinvitethe
presstotheconference.However,after,interviewswithattendees,PopularMechanicshas
learnedthatagroupofresearchersatNASA'sMarshallMannedSpaceFlightCenterin
Huntsville,Alabama,hasnearlycompletedbuildingadevicethatcouldmakeitpossibleto
reducegravitationalattractionsinitsimmediatevicinity.
Partofthereasonforthesecrecyisthattheverythoughtofsuchamachinedefies
conventionalscientificwisdom.
Tounderstandwhy,it'shelpfultoknowtherearetwocomplementarybutnotentirely
compatibleexplanationsforgravity.IsaacNewton,thefirstphysicist,describedgravityasan
attractionbetweentwomasses.AlbertEinstein'sgeneraltheoryofrelativitysuggestsmass
actuallycausesspacetimetowarparoundit.
Imagine,forinstance,theindentationcreatedbyplacingabowlingballonasoftbed.
Boththeoriesexplainwhyapplesfallfromtrees.ScientistsconsiderEinstein'stheorysuperior
becauseitexplainsalsowhylightwhichhasnomassappearstobendinstrong
gravitationalfields.

ideaantigravitydevicepreposterous.
Well,mostscientists,anyway.RonKoczor,aresearcheratNASA'sMarshallSpaceFlight
Center,whocoauthoredapaperontheHuntsvillelaboratory'sgravitymodificationdevice
thatwaspresentedattheconference,picksupthestory.
"In1992,Dr.EugenePodkletnovofTampereUniversity,Finland,publishedthe
resultsofhisexperimentwithhightemperatureceramicsuperconductors,"
Koczorsays.
"Hedevisedanexperimentinwhichadiscofsuperconductingmaterialwas
magneticallylevitatedandrotatedathighspeed,uptoseveralthousandrpm,in
thepresenceofanexternalmagneticfield.Inthecourseofthetests,Podkletnov
notedthatobjectsabovetherotatingdiskshowedavariablebutmeasurableloss
ofweight,fromlessthan.5%toabout2%.Hehadnoexplanation,"explains
Koczor.
Podkletnovcollecteddatafromhisexperimentsfornearlyfouryearsandcompileditina
paperthatwasacceptedforpublicationintheprestigiousJournalofPhysics.
Butthepaperneverappeared.Severaldaysbeforeitsscheduledpublicationinthefallof
1996,PodkletnovtoldhisstorytotheLondonSundayTelegraph.Otherreportersattempting
toconfirmthestorylearnedthatoneofPodkletnov'scoauthorsclaimedtohavenever
workedontheproject.
PodkletnovwithdrewhispaperandreturnedtothefacultyoftheMoscowChemistryScience
ResearchCentre.Formanyjournalists,thesituationwasbeginningtolooklikethecold
fusiondebacle.Theyquicklybackedofffromthestory.
NoteveryonewasdissuadedbyPodkletnov'srefusaltopublishhiswork.Sevenyearsearlier,
NingLi,atheoristwhoworkedwithNASA'sMarshallcenter,haddevelopedatheory
suggestingthatasuperconductorrotatedinastrongmagneticfieldcoulddisruptthe
gravitationalforceinitsimmediatevicinity.Threeofherpapersweresubsequentlypublished
bymajorscientificjournals.
CurrentlyaseniorscientistontheresearchfacultyoftheUniversityofAlabamain
Huntsville,NingLihasbeenhelpingtobuildthesuperconductingdiscfortheMarshall
antigravitydeviceforthepastyear.
WhittBrantley,theNASAdesignatedspokesmanfortheexperimentwhoalsoisamemberof
theantigravityproject,saysthespaceagency'sscientistsdecidedlastyeartotrytoduplicate
Podkletnov'smachinebylookingoverhisearlierresearchandexchanginginformationwith
himbytelephoneandemail.
"Eachtimewecontacthimthereseemstobemoredetail.It'ssortoflikechasingsomething,"
saysBrantley.
NASAisn'tsureitsantigravitymachine,whichis90%complete,willwork.Atthemoment,
thebiggestproblemisbuildingthefragilesuperconductingdisc,whichis,infact,madeoftwo
discs,explainsBrantley.Oneismadeofmetalthatcanbelevitatedinamagneticfield.Ontop
ofitisacompositemadeofsuperconductingmaterials.
Thisassemblyishousedina20in.dia.columnthatstandsabout4ft.tall.Atthestartofthe
experiment,itwillbefilledwithliquidheliumornitrogen,whichcoolstheapparatusto

minus400[degrees]F.
Onlythenisthediscsetintomotion.
IfthemachineperformsasPodkletnovclaims,delicateinstrumentswillshowadiminutionof
gravity'stug.
Brantleysaysresearchersoriginallysawaslightgravityshieldingeffectwhentheyplaced
instrumentationaboveasmaller,stationarydisc.
Itturnedouttobetheresultofthemagneticfield.Addingordinary1/2in.ironplates
removedthisanomaly.SomecriticscontendthatifPodkletnovhadtakenasimilar
precaution,theeffectsthatheobservedwouldhavelikewisedisappeared.
MostphysicistsbelievethatwhenNASAflipstheswitchonitsgravitymodification
experiment,absolutelynothingwillhappen.Thenagain,itcouldstartthecountdowntoa
boldnewerainspaceexploration.
