Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such as the reports,
photographs, laboratory exam / tool tests are required to be attached to the assignment report
in a proper order.
The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the Second Examiners
comments should be in GREEN ink.
The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be written only in the Component
CET B: Assignment table.
If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the second examiner lies
within +/- 3 marks, then the marks allotted by the first examiner is considere d to be final. If the
variation is more than +/- 3 marks then both the examiners should resolve the issue in
consultation with the Chairman BoE.

Propellers are also considered as power absorbing turbomachine without stator. They
are used to generate thrust to propel smaller aircraft.
B.1.1. Discuss the working principle of propeller and scope of propeller application
B.1.2. Discuss the variation of velocity and total and static properties i.e. pressure ,
temperature, enthalpy in propeller flow stream
B.1.3. Discuss the effect of flight speed on aircraft propeller thrust and efficiency
B.1.4. Operating conditions that limits aerodynamic performance of aircraft
propeller
B.2
Turbines are most efficient power generating machines. Both axial and radial
flow turbines find scope in this area. A given type of turbine may be efficient over some range
of size and available specific energy otherwise may not be efficient and economical as well.
B.2.1 Discuss working principle and theory behind axial and radial turbine
B.2.2 Discuss on the requirements of operating condition for axial and radial turbine
B.2.3 Discuss the causes that limit the performance of axial and radial turbines
B.2.4 Applications that are well suited for different type of machine
B.2.5 Conclusion and justification
B.3 An axial turbine with constant nozzle angle and zero reaction runs at 6000 RPM. The
hub and tip diameter are 0.5 m and 0.8m. All sections are designed for maximum
utilization factor. Assuming radial equilibrium conditions , determine the following at
hub, mean and tip of blade section:
B.3.1 Absolute and relative flow angles
B.3.2 Blade to gas speed ratio
B.3.3 Degree of reaction
B.3.4 Specific work
Note: Consult the course leader for selecting the value of nozzle angle
B.4 For a certain application, it is desired to generate 1000 kW of power with existing water
resource. The available static head is H m and minimum discharge is 0.3 m3 /s. Technical
committee recommended pelton turbine that runs at rotational speed of 1000 RPM with at
least 70% efficiency.
B.4.1 Justify whether Pelton wheel is suitable for the above requirement.
Assume suitable coefficient of velocity and coefficient of drag and calculate the
following:
B.4.2 Efficiency of pelton turbine
B.4.3 Number of jets used
B.4.4 Jet diameter
B.4.5 Pelton wheel diameter and number of buckets
Note: Consult the course leader for selecting the value of static head
