Consolidatingarmorclassandhitpointswasdoneforsimplicity,butagain,ithasa
realism:
First,itdispenseswiththeinterestingfictionthathighlevelcharacterscouldwade
throughamobofkoboldsandnottakesomuchasascratch.Lowlevelenemies
remainverydangerous,especiallyinnumbers...
Thenatureofgamesissuchthathighleveltypesstillneedtobechallenged.Wejust
wantedtobemorehonestaboutwhatwashappeningandtospreadthingsoutacross
levels!
Andyes,lowlevelcharactersenjoyadecentbufferofhitpoints,withfewergainedat
eachnewlevel.Some,likefighters,getbetterhitsaspartoftheirskillset,as
opposedtosay,magic,whileothers(magicians)sufferlowerhitstobalancetheir
otherwiseconsiderableabilities,namelyspellcasting.
Butconsiderthatasimple1d6trapcouldreduceacharacterquickly,especiallyif
they'vealreadyencounteredenemies.Nottomentionthatapairoforcs(say,2/+1in
leatherarmor)couldreallychallengeafightersincetheygettheflankingbonus(+1)
andthefightercanonlydealwithoneatatime(unlesstheyhavethesweeping
move).
Thesamelowchancetohitthatprotectstheplayercharactersalsoprotectstheir

enemies,andevenasimplebonusmatterswhenyourattackspreadis212insteadof
120.Factorinmultipleattacks,andthingscangethairyquick!
Mathematically,each+1bonusequals(approximately)+9%,sooutflankingmatters!

Oh,andyou'recorrect:10+4=14HP(notincludingarmor,ofcourse).
Wereallylikeyourmagicclasses.They'renicelyintegratedandbalanced,especially
withtheelves,andweconfesstohavingnotconsideredtheschoolsofmagicyou
proposeverynice!
LikesomanyOSRgames,P&Pwasdesignedwithanoldschoolethos.Themost
importantofthesebeingthateachcampaignisagameuntoitself,evenwhenthe
samebasicrulesarebeingused.Wethinkyou'veachievedthatnicely!

ArcaneAdventurersmakeacleveraddition.Theessentialdungeonexplorer!
Druidsarereallycool,andwelovetheadditionalabilities.Shapeshiftersarealso
prettysweet.Welikehowyou'vebuiltaspecializationaroundjustafewspells(and
reallytappedtheirpotential).
Elvesarealsonicelydone.Welikehowthey'veretainedanessential"elvishness"
whilemaking(human)magiciansthedominantspecialists.Elvesarereluctantto
imposetheirwilluponnature,eventhroughmagic.
Overall,balanceandintegrationbetweenthefourisverywelldone,andperfectfora
magicallycenteredcampaign.
Nicejobusingspellavailabilityforbalance,bytheway.Eachhasitsowncharacter.
Bestofluckasyourgamesgetunderway!We'rehardatworkonnewresourceson

I'mgladtoseethatmyassumptionsaboutthecombatruleswerefairlyaccurate.I
mustapplaudyouonthetransparencyofintentforyourrules,that'snotaneasything
todo.
TruthbetoldabouttheArcaneAdventurer,Iwaslookingoverthespelllistandseeing
whichonesnaturallyseemedtonaturallygrouptogetherandIsawalltheseutilitytype
spellsthatdidn'tnecessarilylendthemselvestoanyonparticularspecialtyoranother.
Uponfurtherinspectionthough,theyallseemedtobethingsthatwouldalwaysbenice
tohaveonanadventureandthesumtogetherdidn'tseemtoopowerfultohaveallin
onepackage.Sothentheclassideajustkindofsprangupfromthere.
Thankyouforthecomplimentsonthespecialties.Druidshavealwaysbeenafavorite
classofmine,sotheywereanaturaltobeoneofthefirstIwrote.Asfortheelf
change,Icouldn'tbringmyselftonarrowtheirspelloptionsdownto4or5,soIjust
decidedtoeliminatethemoreovertanddestructivespellsasthoseseemedless'elfy'.
Ihopetogettotrythisalloutwithmygroupsoonwithabitofatestdrive.Itwill
unfortunatelybeabitlongeruntilIcanrunsomethingmoresubstantialsinceIjust
finishedrunningacouplesessionsofHulks&HorrorsandnowtheDMinthegroupis
goingtoresumeout4ecampaignofWaroftheBurningSky.
Ieagerlyawaitanynewstuffyouallcomeupwith.I'mimmenselyimpressedwith
whatyou'vedonealreadyandIcan'twaittoseemore.
Iwentaheadandwroteupafewmorespecializations.Ifeelalittleiffyaboutthe
GeneralistandtheStormcaster,butIlikehowtheIllusionistandWarmageturnedout.
I'mthinkingImightnexttrymyhandatmorenonmagictypeclassesthatadaptsome
ofthespellsfortheirspecialabilities.SuchasaRangerthathassomethingofa
permanentHideandMute(selfonly)effectwheninnaturalsettingsandcan
immediatelyCalmwildanimalsandperhapsaBerserkerwhocanflyintoaragewhere
theyGrowandgiveoffapermanentFearorRouteffectwhenraging.Anyway,hereare
theotherspecialties:

BackintheAD&Ddays,illusionistswerealwaysaversatileclassbecauseillusions
couldbeofanything.ThisistruewithRuse,andtheneedforconcentrationbalances
itspowernicely.
Alsolikehowyousavethereallypowerful(offensive)spellsforthestormcasterand
reallypareitdowntojustafew.Dittoforwarmages(toalesserextent).I'dcertainly
wantoneonmyside!
Varietyofspelleffectsispower,andthelackthereofaneffectivebalancing
mechanism.
Atanyrate,youcrossbalancealotofmovingparts,anditspeakstothefeelingof
yourcampaign.
Yes,elvesaretheirownanimal,andgiventheirdesireforharmony,theywouldbe
reluctanttotapthemoredisruptivepowersofnatureforanyreason.And,ofcourse,it
helpsbalancethemagainstothercharacters.
Soundslikeyouhavealotofgamingonyourplate.We'rehonoredthatyouchoseours
foryourbusyschedule,andwehopeyouandyourgroupenjoysit.Wedoplananother
supplement,andpossiblyasettingwithmorecontent.
We'llseewhattheyearbrings.Oh,andwehopetoberunningeventsatPretzcon

IadmitIgotalittle(ok,alot)carriedawaywiththewarmage.Isomehowhadnot
completelyrealizedthatmagicalplatehasaminimumofa+4tobonushits.IthinkI'll
reducethearmorallowanceforthemtoatmostchainmailandmaybejustleather.I
figuredthereductioninthemagicitemstheycouldusewouldalsohelpcompensatefor
theirdestructivepotential.Ishouldmentionthatgiventhemoreorlessatwillnature
ofmagicwithmyhouserules,thatprettymuchallspellswillallowasavingthrow.
Alas,IliveawaysawayfromOmahaorKansasCityandhaveneitherthetimenorthe
fundstomakeittoeitherofthosecons,butIwishyouthebest.

and/ormoney.
Thesamegoesforfighters,whodonotimprovefightingability,butcanemploymagic
itemsthatallowthemtodoso.Actually,combatmoveswereintroducedinpartto
differentiatecombatspecialistswithoutupsettingthis...
Thatsaid,accesstomagicitemsisanotherwaytoempowerand/orbalance
characters.Thefactthatyougrantsavingdicealsogoesalongwaytowardsbalancing
powerfor"magicattheready"magicians.
Otherwise,spellsareultimatelyjusteffects.Theycanbeappliedtononspellcasters
andattributedtononmagicalsources,anditbecomesasimplematterofreferencing
theoriginalspellwhendoingso.Verynicejobhere,bytheway!
Wereallylikeyourgrouphealingconcept.Thisaddsalotofflexibilityandforcesthe
playerstothinkandsetpriorities.Theberserkerisalsoprettyinteresting.Youcross
balancethisinmanyways,likenotbeingabletousecharisma,etc.Wealsolikethat
theyadvanceonthedwarftablenowhere'sabalancingmechanismusedinnew
ways!
Dittoforassassins.You'vemanagedtomakesoundscary.
Ultimately,wewantedtocreateagamethatwascompleteandwholeuntoitself,but
thatcouldbetailoredbyrefereesfortheirpersonalcampaigns.Therulesareatoncea
fullgame(likeD&D),orrawmaterialsandresources(likeGURPS).Inthehandsofa
capablereferee,thisshouldworkjustfine.We'redelightedtoseethatthisisthecase!

ThatisonethingI'vebeentryingtokeepinmind.Imaychangethewarmagetoallow
uptoplatearmor,butlikethesavant,magicarmorinterfereswiththeirmagic.That
shouldhopefullykeepthemincheckabitmore.
I'verevisedtheassassinabit.Ifelttheirshadowformwasalittletoostrongasanat
willability.SoitnowcoststhemoneHPtoentertheformanditlastsfor1turnand
eachturnafterthefirstcostsanotherHP.Theirbackstababilityupgradestomimicthe
thief'sat9thlevel.AndIputinoneabilitythatIhadforgottenwhichwastheabilityto
handlepoisonwithoutdanger.IfIfindinplaythattheshadowformistoopowerful,I
mayreduceittooneroundofactivationperHPspent.
Letmesaythankyouagainforlettingmemonopolizeyourtimelikethis.Ihaven't
quitehadanopportunitytodiscussagamewiththedesigner(s?)likethisbeforeand

We'reonlinefairyoften(punctuatedbytheoccasionalweekorsooff)andwe'reglad
toanswerquestions.We'veenjoyedthediscussiontoo,andgreatlyappreciateyour
interest!
Playtestingisthebest(andmostenjoyable)waytoseewhatworks,butyourHPdrain
forshadowformmakessensegiventhematerialdisruptioninvolved.Thesavant's
inabilitytousemagicarmorworksinpracticebecauseallowingitwouldgreatly
expandtheirabilitytoemploypsychicfunctions,whichwasnotitspurpose.Itsounds
likeyou'vegotithandled...
