Diphtheria scare triggers mass immunization drive
Malappuram District has 23912 unimmunized children below 5
years- the largest group resisting vaccination in the state. Recently there was
an outbreak of Diphtheria at 2 Arabic College Hostels in the district. 4 cases
were confirmed and over 36 children showed symptoms of the disease.
Preventive measures were taken by giving medicines and vaccines to
vulnerable groups. All those who got the disease were not vaccinated against
Diphtheria. The district Panchayat has come forward to join hands with the
Health Department to reach out to all the 23912 unimmunized children below
5 years. Though they are resisting all efforts of immunization, the help of NSS,
Student Police Cadets, NCC, Thanalkoottu, Scouts, Kudumbasree, Asha
workers, Education Department and other voluntary organizations will be
sought to overcome their resistance.
