facilities leads to further violations.

Diphtheria scare triggers mass immunization drive
Malappuram District has 23912 unimmunized children below 5
years- the largest group resisting vaccination in the state. Recently there was
an outbreak of Diphtheria at 2 Arabic College Hostels in the district. 4 cases
were confirmed and over 36 children showed symptoms of the disease.
Preventive measures were taken by giving medicines and vaccines to
vulnerable groups. All those who got the disease were not vaccinated against
Diphtheria. The district Panchayat has come forward to join hands with the
Health Department to reach out to all the 23912 unimmunized children below
5 years. Though they are resisting all efforts of immunization, the help of NSS,
Student Police Cadets, NCC, Thanalkoottu, Scouts, Kudumbasree, Asha
workers, Education Department and other voluntary organizations will be
sought to overcome their resistance.

Polio status-2015
.
This year, only two countries have reported polio cases -Afghanistan
and Pakistan. Africa has not seen a case in over a year. The reported cases have
also come down dramatically from 350,000 children a year, a decade ago to
mere thousands today.

According to experts, Pakistan will prove the biggest challenge to

global eradication efforts, with the country accounting for nearly 90 percent
of the world's cases in 2014. Fewer than 10 cases have been reported in
Afghanistan so far in 2015.Nigeria saw its last polio case on 24 July 2014. The
World Health Organization may soon remove Nigeria from the list of polioendemic countries
