REPORT ON INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO ERODE RAILWAY

STATION ON 13-08-2014
INTRODUCTION:
The Third year B. E. Civil Engineering students (2012 2016 batch) of Velalar college of
Engineering and Technology, Erode 12 an Industrial visit to Erode Railway station on
0808-2014(Forenoon).
INDUSTRIAL VISIT ARRANGMENTS DETAILS:
Industrial visit arrangements have been divided into 3 batches under the control of five faculty
members.
Initiation letter:
The Initiation letter was written by Principal Dr. M.Jayaraman to the Assistant divisional
Engineer, southern railway of Erode to get the permission. The Civil Engineering department
Head Dr.E.Ravi and faculty IV in charge Mr. C.Karthik personally handover the initiation letter
to Assistant divisional engineer.
Permission letter:
The permission letter was collected in person from engineering department, southern
railway by student organizer Mr.S.Sarath kumar as per their request.
Transport details:
The college bus was arranged with the help of Mr. N.Periyasamy, Administrative
Manager and Mr. R.Ananthamoorthy, Deputy Manager of VCET.

AIM OF THIS VISIT:
The subject title Railways, Airport & Harbour Engineering is included in fifth semester
of Civil Engineering curriculum, we feel it will be fruitful that the students have a sight of the
railway track operation, maintenance and controlling activities of signal in order to have a better
appreciation of practical applications of theory.

ACTIVITIES DURING THE VISIT:


We split the entire visit into two sessions,
1. Class room session delivered by faculty from Railway Training Institute, Erode.
2. Practical session delivered by Inspector of work (IoW) Railway Track and Signaling at
site, Erode.
Class room session:
At Railway training institute, Instructor delivered a lecture about the overall railway track
operations, maintenance of railway track and controlling the railway system.
At railway training institute, various type of rail sections, rail fastenings, defected rail
sections, accessories for welding the rail section, Turnout, Level crossing, Railway crossing, Rail
gauge and various types of signals are displayed. Students are split into three batches and they
are allowed to visit all the models personally and ask if they are having any doubt.
Further the Instructor explained various functions, operations and uses of these railway
track components to each batch with model.
Practical session:
After completion of class room session, all three batch students are gone to site with
instructor and two railway track gang man to guide the students from safety point of view.
The instructor explains the following items to all our three batches separately with live
example at site:
1. Rail gauge
2. Wheel gauge
3. Coning of wheels
4. Sleepers- wooden and prestressed concrete
5. Ballast
6. Rail fastenings Fish plate, Spike, Sliding plate etc.,
7. Track circuiting
8. Left hand turnout
9. Right hand turnout
10. Tongue rail
11. Stock rail
12. Switches
13. Distance blocks
14. Rolling stocks
15. Signals Semaphore signal and coloured signal.
16. Fouling mark
17. Widening of wheel gauge on curve.
During the practical session, students permitted to see the rail engine front axle, back axle
and wheel flange projection in the moving locomotive at a speed of around 10kmph.

his valuable advice. We thank Mr. C.Karthik, Faculty IV incharge who helped in getting
permission in the southern railway. Our sincere thanks to Mr.Srinivasan, Assistant divisional
engineer, Engineering department, Southern railway, Erode who gave permission, helped in
understanding the various technical details of railways network. Our sincere thanks go to
everyone who helped for this useful industrial visit.
