Engine Light

Vehicles rely on many components working harmoniously

to function at optimal capacity. Any number of systems can go
wrong, and oftentimes the first indication that something has
gone awry is an illuminated dashboard signal.
One such signal is the check engine light. Many drivers
have little idea what to do when this indicator lights up, and
this light can cause some anxiety. According to Consumer
Reports, a check engine light turning on does not usually
require immediate action. However, it does mean that you
should make an appointment to have the vehicle inspected for
potential problems.
Check engine lights are part of a cars onboard diagnostics.
The light turning on may indicate something minor, such as a
loose fuel cap, or something more serious like a misfiring
engine. When the light turns on, drivers wondering why may
want to see if the answer is related to one of the following
issues.
1. Loose gas cap: Fuel vapors can leak out and air can get
in when the fuel cap isnt secured correctly. This can compromise the fuel system and make the check engine light come
on. Take off the cap and then reseal it to see if that alleviates
the problem. Cracked caps will need to be replaced.
2. Dirty oxygen sensor: A faulty or clogged sensor may not
provide the right information about unburned oxygen from
the vehicles exhaust. This sensor monitors how much fuel is
burned. Compromised data can cause a decrease in fuel efficiency. Some do-it-yourselfers can replace an oxygen sensor
on their own, but those who cant should have the issue
addressed immediately by a professional.
3. Too much speed or load: Towing a trailer or another
heavy item may put strain on the vehicle and cause the light
to come on because of loss of power. Lightening the load and
reducing speed can help fix the problem. Always consult with
the owners manual to determine the towing capacity of your
vehicle.
4. Short or faulty code: Computers arent always foolproof, and sometimes an electrical short or another similar
problem can cause a light to come on. Bring the vehicle to an
automotive supply store. Such stores typically have diagnostics tools that can be hooked into the cars computer and
provide a more detailed understanding of what is triggering
the check engine indicator.
In many cases, a steady check engine light is not a serious
concern. However, when such a light comes on, drivers
should try to find out why as soon as possible.

Distracted Driving A Real Threat

Dating back to the days of

the first automobiles, drivers
have always taken on a degree
of risk when getting behind
the wheel and hitting the open
road. While technology has
done much to mitigate that
risk, its also contributed to
the growing number of distractions drivers face on the
road.
Distracted driving is a significant threat. According to
the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, in
2012 more than 3,300 people
were killed in crashes involving a distracted
driver. Just a year earlier, 17 percent of
crashes in which someone was injured
involved distracted driving.
Those figures are even more disturbing
when one considers the problem of underreporting with regard to distracted driving. The
National Safety Council notes that underreporting of mobile phone use leading to car
crashes makes the issue of distracted driving
appear less substantial than it likely is.
Perhaps because they fear potential citations
or even possible incarceration, many drivers
involved in crashes do not admit to using
mobile phones while driving.
But a 2011 CDC study found that distracted driving is a genuine threat. In the study,
survey participants were asked how often
they had read or sent a text message or email
while driving in the previous 30 days. Nearly
one-third of study participants in the United
States admitted that they had, and those figures were similar in Portugal and Belgium. In
addition, 69 percent of U.S. drivers between
the ages of 18 and 64 reported that they had
talked on their mobile phones while driving
in the past 30 days.
Combatting distracted driving is not easy.
As the use of mobile devices grows, many
people are finding it increasingly difficult to
put those devices down, even when they are
behind the wheel of their automobiles. But

there are some steps drivers

can take to improve their
awareness on the road.
One such step is to reduce
reliance on hands-free devices. Though it might seem as
though hands-free devices
are the ultimate weapon
against distracted driving,
the NSC reports that more
than 30 studies have shown
that such devices do not
make drivers any safer.
Thats because drivers remain
distracted by the conservations they have while using
hands-free devices. Reports from the NSC,
Texas Transportation Institute and AAA
Foundation for Traffic Safety indicate that
drivers talking on handheld or hands-free
devices can fail to see as much as 50 percent
of their surroundings. When driving, stick to
driving so you can focus all of your attention
on the road, where it belongs.
Another step drivers can take to improve
their awareness on the road is to educate
themselves and their teenaged drivers about
the dangers of distracted driving. A University
of Utah study found that drivers using mobile
phones had slower reaction times than drivers
with a .08 blood alcohol content, which is the
legal intoxication limit in many states. If
more drivers realized that speaking on their
mobile phones impairs their reaction time
even more than driving drunk, then perhaps
more people would put down their phones
and continue their conversations once they
reach their destinations.
Finally, drivers who recognize their habits
can take steps to prevent those habits from
putting them in harms way. If you are never
too far away from your mobile phone and
unable to resist the urge to read and/or answer
a text message or email, turn your phone off
and put it in the glove compartment before
you hit the road. Doing so might just save
your life and the lives of your passengers and
fellow motorists.

Open House Meetings, Deer

Hearings Begin March 20

ing season and to provide feedback on the

number of moose permits recommended for
2016.
We are offering these March Wildlife
Open House meetings in Castleton and
Montpelier as a means of presenting and discussing the other game management programs, said Scott Darling, wildlife management program manager. While the focus on
deer is understandable, there are many other
important wildlife management efforts,
including our work to conserve and manage
habitat, that are also worthy of the publics
attention.
Wildlife Open House meetings:
Sunday, March 20, 1-5 p.m. Kehoe
Conservation Camp, 636 Point of Pines Rd.,
Castleton, VT 05735
Saturday, March 26, 1-5 pm, Montpelier
High School, 5 High School Drive, Montpelier,
VT 05602

Hunters, landowners and anyone else interested in Vermonts wildlife should plan on
attending one of the three events hosted by
the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department
this month.
The Fish & Wildlife Department holds
three public hearings each March to provide
the results of the deer hunting seasons and
receive public input on the status of Vermonts
deer herd. This year, two of the hearings will
be on weekends and include Open House
sessions on management of black bear, moose,
and furbearers as well as a discussion of
Vermonts wildlife habitat.
The hearings will still include results of
Vermonts 2015 deer and moose seasons and
prospects for deer and moose hunting next
fall as well as an opportunity for hunters to
provide their observations and opinions about
the status of these big game animals.
The three meetings will also serve as public hearings to review the 2015 moose hunt

Turkey Hunting Seminar, April 2 in Barre

The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department

is hosting a free turkey hunting seminar this
spring from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday,
April 2 at the Barre Fish and Game Club on
Gun Club Road in Barre.
Both experienced and first-time turkey
hunters stand to benefit from these seminars,
said Hunter Education Training Coordinator
John Pellegrini. We will provide A-Z hunting information, including safe hunting practices, specialized equipment, calls, site setup,

and other strategies for harvesting turkeys.

Certified Volunteer Hunter Education
Instructors Jeff Blanchard will be leading the
seminar.
Those interested in attending may sign up
by going to VT Hunter Education Seminars
at: http://tinyurl.com/gr9csxh.
Registration is online and participants are
encouraged to bring a lunch. Participants
should NOT bring their own shotguns and
ammunition to the seminar.

F&W Cautions Public to Stay Off Ice

The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department

is imploring people to exercise extreme caution around frozen water bodies and not to go
on the ice for any reason. After recent tragic
events involving ice anglers, Vermont game
wardens are reporting that ice conditions have
deteriorated to unsafe levels statewide.
Record warm temperatures, wind and rain
have caused ice to become unsafe in many
areas that would traditionally have held solid
ice for several more weeks. Ice may appear
thick, but is structurally weak and melting
from underneath as well as at the surface.
With the rain and unseasonably warm
weather, some areas of the state are seeing
thinner and more unpredictable ice than we

would expect this time of year, said Col.

Jason Batchelder, chief game warden. We
would encourage everyone to stay off the
ice.
Wednesday, angler Kenneth Gaudette died
after falling through the ice on Shelburne
Pond despite a rescue attempt by Warden
Dana Joyal. Joyal was briefly hospitalized for
hypothermia.
We train for these situations, but each one
is unique and calls for the judgment and discretion of the officer involved, said
Batchelder. Dana showed extraordinary
courage in this ultimately tragic circumstance.
Our thoughts are with the Gaudette family.
