NU 609: Advance Health Assessment

Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner Program


Course Overview
The focus of this clinical course is on the examination of the process of holistic assessment (physical, psychosocial, & cultural) of
individuals across the lifespan. Focus is critical thinking and decision making relating to the role of the advanced practice nurse in
a primary care setting.
Course Objectives
1. Perform a comprehensive physical, psychosocial, developmental, and cultural assessment in a concise and systematic
manner.
2. Analyze history, physical examination, diagnostic procedures, and laboratory data to formulate differential diagnoses.
3. Skillfully perform selected diagnostic and laboratory procedures.
4. Document health assessment data in a concise, accurate, and logical manner to meet standards for reimbursement.
5. Effectively communicate assessment findings to other healthcare professionals.
Clinical Hours Required: 135 hours
Preceptor Responsibilities
1. The Preceptor will provide a setting that enables student to gain clinical experience relevant to program objectives.
2. The Preceptor will function as a role model providing clinical teaching and supervision for the student in the practice of
assessment and management specific to patient care needs.
3. The Preceptor will cosign all official records or documents with entries by the APN student.
4. The Preceptor will participate with the faculty member in conversations to discuss the students progress and learning
needs.
5. The Preceptor will provide input regarding clinical evaluation of the student by completing and submitting the Preceptor
Evaluation of the Student Form to the course faculty within 48 hours after the last student clinical day.
6. The Preceptor is expected to notify faculty immediately when the performance of the student is in question.
Student Responsibilities
1. The Student is responsible for demonstrating professional and ethical behaviors in all communication and interactions
with faculty, Preceptors, patients, families, and all persons in the healthcare environment.
2. The Student is responsible for completing and submitting all forms relating to the clinical experiences.
3. The Student shall develop a mutually agreeable schedule with the Preceptor. For the 90 hour clinical courses, students
should attend clinical 8 hours a week max. For the 135 hour clinical courses, students should attend clinical 10-15 hours a
week max. Clinical hours must be concurrent to the course that the student is participating in. Approval is required by
course faculty and may be required from the program chair, to do more clinical hours per week.
4. The Student will demonstrate the ability to manage progressively complex patient care situations (differential diagnosis,
treatment plans, and patient teaching) in accordance with his/her academic progression.
5. The Student participates in conferences with the Preceptor and faculty to discuss progress and identify learning needs.
6. The Student enters data from clinical experiences by Sundays at 11:59pm and responds to faculty comments within 48
hours.

The focus of this clinical course is on synthesizing theoretical, scientific, and contemporary knowledge for the assessment and
management of both health and illness states in adults with attention to gender, age, and ethnic variations.
Course Objectives
1. Distinguish between normal and abnormal physical and psychosocial changes associated with patients aged 25 55 years.
2. Identify syndromes and disease states commonly managed by advanced practice nurses in the adult population.
3. Critique existing protocols and best practices that address differential diagnosis, pharmacotherapeutic intervention, and
resources to manage and evaluate acute and chronic illness in the adult population
4. Plan and implement therapeutic interventions to return the adult patient to a stable state and/or optimize the patients
health.
5. Examine state and federal resources influencing healthcare for the adult population.

resources to manage and evaluate acute and chronic illness in womens and infant populations.
4. Plan and implement therapeutic interventions to return the woman and infant patient to a stable state and/or optimize the
patients health.
5. Identify ethical issues in examining state and federal resources influencing health care for the womens and infant
populations.

APPENDIX E: TYPHON OVERVIEW


Account Information:
- New students will receive information on Typhon and how to access your account in the 3rd week of the semester
- Your username and password will be sent to you in a follow up email
- The first time you log into Typhon you will be promoted to complete the set up process. At this time you can change your
password and set up your default settings.
- You should also be entering and uploading the following information:
* Contact information *Picture *Copy of your RN License *Copy of BLS

Requesting a Preceptor/Clinical Site:


- Go to Setup Default Choices under Your Account on the main menu. Under the Required Defaults you will notice a
link to the side of the preceptor and clinical site drop down menu that says REQUEST ADDITION. Click this link and
enter the required information for BOTH the site and preceptor. (You will need your preceptor information forms to
enter the information off of)
- Once the addition is verified and approved, you will receive an email notifying you that your preceptor and/or clinical site
have been added to the directory. At this point you will be able to select the preceptor/clinical site as you default setting
when inputting a case log. Again, you need to request BOTH the Site and Preceptor separately.
Entering a Case Log
- Go to Add New Case Log from the main menu. Input the Date of Encounter by clicking on the calendar icon or by
clicking the TODAY link, which will input the current date for you automatically. Then click Save Data.
- Input all relevant and required information and then click Save Data located in the center of the screen.
- At any point you can delete the case. The option is located in the bottom right hand corner. You can also save the case
and begin a new one or to the next case in your case log list by clicking on those options in the bottom left hand corner.
- You have 7 days from your clinical day to enter this information afterwards you will be locked out and will lose that day
Entering Time Logs
- Go to my Time Logs from the main menu. Click on add a Daily Time Log and input the Date of Time Log by clicking
on the calendar icon or by clicking the TODAY link, which will input the current date for you automatically. Make sure
your Course and Preceptor is listed correctly them click Save Data.
- Input the number of hours and our minutes for your clinical shift that day and click Save Data.
- You may also check the box Display patient, consult & conference time if you would like those total make available on
the screen. If you want to see your shift time parallel to your patient time, go to My Hours by Course under the Other
Activities & Reports heading. You may also go into My Time Logs and select a date range and check the Display
patient, consult and conference time, box in the top left corner, then hit Apply Filters.
Missing Information
- The Missing Information link on the main menu will have a flashing red arrow next to it any of your case logs are
incomplete. You would simply click on missing Information, view the entry and input the required data.
Instructions & Video Tutorials
- Helpful tutorials related to your use of Typhon can be accessed under the Help section on the main menu.
- You should view these tutorials prior to starting your clinical as the videos are your formal training to Typhon.
Miscellaneous Information
- To search for sites or preceptors in your area, go to Directories under the main menu, click the one you would like to
view and filter it by state

- Under Downloads on the main menu you will find Blank Case Log Worksheet. Print copies of these to bring to clinical
and fill out for each patient. This will cut down the time it takes you enter your patient encounters to 2-3 minutes per
patient.
- Under Downloads you will see Most Common ICD/CPT Codes. View these to ask in properly entering your codes.
