Post-16 Education
Evening

St Marys Sixth Form

Introduction
We are very pleased to introduce you to post-16 study at St Marys; this booklet gives
information for prospective students and their parents.
Post-16 education should be considered carefully; the choices you make now will have farreaching implications for your future and you must make these choices using all of the
possible information available to you.
There are various reasons why you may choose to continue in education:

You enjoy studying and would like to pursue your favourite subjects at a higher
level and/or begin a new course of study
You have a particular career in mind which needs a qualification gained through
higher education, or you want relevant vocational experience to enable you to
embark on that career path
You have no definite career plans, but you would like to continue your education
and improve your qualifications and skills

All of these are especially valid in the increasingly competitive employment and education
market.
The advantages in choosing to stay on at St Marys are:

You will be taught by staff who know you well and can support you to make
excellent progress
There is no need for settling-in to a new place and so less time is lost at the
beginning of the course. This is especially important because the first
examinations occur in the January of Year 12
In some subjects there are smaller teaching groups than you have been used to
and so you get more individual attention and active participation
St Marys students have an excellent track-record in moving on to their first
choice universities (including Oxbridge) and careers
You will have opportunities to take on more responsibility and enjoy privileges in
an institution with which you are already familiar

OFSTED says Students are entirely happy with the academic and personal support they
receive, and appreciative: You get personal attention here. There are many opportunities
for them to contribute to school life and the community and also Teaching is
predominantly good
Courses and Curriculum
We offer a full range of subjects at level 2 (GCSE and equivalent) and level 3 (AS and A
level and equivalent). Vocational and applied courses are included alongside the more
traditional academic subjects. We aim to give maximum possible flexibility in the
curriculum so that so that you will have access to the fullest range of opportunities beyond
Year 13.

Enrichment activities are an integral part of Sixth Form life at St. Marys; all students take
part in extra-curricular activities, community service in and out of school and trips to
enhance their subject studies. Through these experiences our senior students develop
their wider life and leadership skills.
Care, Guidance and Support
Our strong and comprehensive care and guidance programme supports students to
maximise their academic success. It includes:

Progress tracking by subject teachers and the Sixth Form Team

A personal tutor who offers academic and pastoral mentoring
A programme of information and guidance activities to support the university
application process
Careers advice and guidance, in partnership with other organisations
Advice from the Director and Assistant Director of Sixth Form
Partnership with parents through regular communication and parents evenings

Admission Criteria
Applications from existing St Marys students and from students of other schools are
welcomed. An application form is available from the school. Applicants need to have
achieved sufficient qualifications at GCSE or equivalent to qualify for the course they
wish to follow:

In the event of oversubscription, students from St Marys will be given preference, after

All Sixth Form students are expected to work hard and play a full and active role in the life
of the school; the expectations of the partnership between students, parents and school

The Sixth Form Partnership
We are delighted to be entering our second year of the extremely successful SHaW
consortium which has allowed us to broaden our offer with courses delivered at Whitefield
School and Hampstead School. This means students wishing to remain at St Marys can
complete courses such as French, Spanish, Government & Politics, Further Maths,
Photography, Law or BTEC Level 3 Food Technology at these nearby providers. These
courses will be subject to timetabling constraints and student take-up, but we are keen for
our students to remain with us and so are working hard to establish more choice in the
Sixth Form. The full range of courses available across the partnership will aim to reflect
student requests.

Submission of unit 1, Revision for Unit 2 Exam

The course

Edexcels GCE in Design and Technology: Product Design

comprises four units and contains an Advanced Subsidiary
subset of two AS units.
The Advanced Subsidiary GCE is the first half of the GCE course
and consists of Units 1 and 2. It may be awarded as a discrete
qualification or contribute 50 per cent of the total Advanced GCE
marks.
The full Advanced GCE award consists of the two AS units
(Units 1 and 2), plus two A2 units (Units 3 and 4) which make up
the other 50 per cent of the Advanced GCE. Students wishing to
take the full Advanced GCE must, therefore, complete all four
units.
Unit 1; Portfolio
Students will produce one portfolio with three distinct sections
which will demonstrate their creativity and flair when
investigating, designing and making product(s). The three distinct
sections have been adopted as students are not being asked to
perform one large design and make exercise but three smaller
and more focused tasks which build up to provide a detailed
portfolio of their skills.
Unit 2; Written Exam
In this unit, students will develop a knowledge and understanding
of a wide range of materials and processes used in the field of

design and technology. It is important for students, as designers,

to learn about materials and processes so that they can develop
a greater understanding of how products can be designed and
manufactured.

Students will also learn about industrial and commercial practices

and the importance of quality checks and the health and safety
issues that have to be considered at all times. The knowledge
and understanding students develop in this unit can be easily
applied to their Unit 1: Portfolio of Creative Skills.

The course

Sociology is a popular subject at this school and it complements many

other level 3 courses. Students taking history, psychology, geography or
any science subjects feel it suits their portfolio of subjects well. Students
say the parts they enjoy most are when they look critically at things they
have been taking for granted in their lives, and have their long held views
challenged.
All universities regard Sociology as a valuable subject, especially where
students are looking to pursue courses and careers in the humanities,
journalism, public sector work, education or law.

Careers

Summer
Preparation

Core text is AS level Sociology for AQA, written by Rob Webb and Keith

The course

The A2 course is more challenging than the AS work as it involves more

work on the theory and methods behind sociology. It demands a more
philosophical and critical attitude of the students. It also tackles some
controversial issues, but ones which are highly relevant to todays society.
All universities regard Sociology as a valuable subject, especially where
students are looking to pursue courses and careers in the humanities,
journalism, public sector work, education or law.
