3 Sonia and Aaron were given some solid silver carbonate to carry out some experiments. Silver
carbonate (Ag2CO3) is a compound containing the elements silver, carbon and oxygen.
First they heated the silver carbonate in a test tube. Small beads of silver metal formed and two
gases were given off: carbon dioxide and oxygen.
Then they collected the silver and mixed it with some tin. They heated the metals until they
melted, so they could mix them together.
a Use the above information to write a word equation for the chemical reaction which
happened when the silver carbonate was heated.

g The heat was turned off after 11 minutes and the tube was left to cool.
On the grid above, draw the shape of the graph that you would get.
Continue the line as far as 20 minutes.

d When malachite is heated, copper oxide and carbon dioxide are formed.
The chemical name for malachite is copper carbonate. When this mineral is heated two
substances are formed - coper oxide and carbon dioxide.
Write a word equation for the reaction that happens when malachite is heated.
