Norbrook Retreat
Water Supply Report
Introduction
The developers plan to construct 16 Three-bedroom units in Norbrook St. Andrew into a
development known as Norbrook Retreat. This water supply report explores the water
distribution design for the subdivision only.
The site is located along the Norbrook Road, North of Immaculate Conception High
School. Figure 1 shows the site location plan. The elevation of the subdivision is
approximately 580meters above mean sea level. The subdivision will be built on
approximately 2 acres (0.84Hectares) of flat land.
This report outlines the methodology behind the design of the water supply for the
proposed subdivision. The aim of the design is to achieve the design criteria set by the
designer. If this is achieved, the water supply network within the proposed subdivision
can be said to be reliable.

Existing NWC Water Source and Infrastructure
The Norbrook Community has a vast water supply network, with 6, 8 and 12 inch
pipelines being the sizes of the main supply pipelines. The hermitage dam is the main
source of water in this area. In the immediate vicinity of the development there is one 4
main line on Norbrook road where it is recommended the source be placed.
Pressure Testing on Pipeline
In order to accurately establish the available pressure from the existing network, a 1-day
test was conducted on the pipeline in the vicinity of the proposed subdivision. RASENG
Ltd employees under the supervision of, Mr. Stephan Rampair, conducted the test from
November 15, 2005. The apparatus used to measure the pressure was the WIKO pressure
gauge that has a range from 0 to 60 psi . Appendix 2 shows the location where the test
was carried out.

Water Supply Report
Design Criteria
The designs developed are guided by the requirements of the Office of Utilities
Regulation, Jamaica Institution of Engineers (JIE) recommended Guidelines for Design
and Construction of Housing Infrastructure Vol 3 1984: Water Supply Systems, and the
American Water Works Association Manual: M31 Distribution System Requirements for
Fire Protection(AWWA M31).
Maximum and Minimum Pressures
The allowable maximum distribution pressure is 690 kPa (100psi) at any point in the
subdivision. The minimum service connection pressure allowed at any point in the
subdivision except during fire flow conditions is 138kPa (20psi). Under fire flow
conditions; the minimum pressure allowed is 34.5 kPa (5psi).
Valving
Valving to this subdivision did not pose a problem and a plan with proposed valving
scheme is shown in figure 2 below

Storage
The storage criteria used for the proposed subdivision was 60% of the 24-hour average
day demand or 30% of the 24-hour average day supply plus the requirement for fire flow
whichever was greater.
Fire Flows and Duration
The fire flow used in this analysis was 60.6 L/s (960USgpm) for a duration of 2 hours.

Total Storage Requirement
Minimum Storage Recommended
Fire Fighting Water Requirement =
60.61L/s x 60 x 60 x 2
436,320 L (115,263 US Gallons)
60% of the 24-hour average day demand
=
0.6 x 26200L
15750L
30% of the 24-hour average day supply plus the fire flow requirement
=
(0.3 x 26200L) + (2x 3600 x 60.6)
=
444180L
Hence recommended storage is 444.2m3 (117,514 US gallons)
For a small subdivision such as this it is impractical to create storage for this great
capacity and hence it is recommended that storage for two days (average water supply) be
designed, using one day for regular subdivision needs and one day storage for extreme
circumstances. The piping in the subdivision will allow the use of the stored water for
firefighting should the need arise.
Fire Fighting Requirements
Needed Fire Flow
Calculation of the Needed Fire Flow (NFF) was done based on the Insurance Services
Office (ISO) method as presented in the American Water Works Association Manual:
M31 Distribution System Requirements for Fire Protection(AWWA M31).
The method states that:
NNF = (Ci)(Oi)(X+P)i
Where,
Ci= Construction Factor = 18F(Ai)0.5, where
F=
Coefficient Related to Class of Construction (AWWA M31 page 4)
Ai=
Effective Floor Area (in sq.ft.) = Area of Ground Floor + First Floor )
Oi= Occupancy Factor (AWWA M31 Table 1-2)

Ai = Effective Floor Area
Ai= Largest Ground Floor Area Possible (in Sq. Ft.)+50% of Second Floor (in

Maximum building area = 30.5ftx 50.5ft.
Ai = (30.5ft x 50.5 ft ) x 1.5
Ai = 2310.375 sq.ft.
Hence,
Ci= 18 x 1 x 2310.3751/2
Ci= 865.2gpm
Oi= 0.85 Limited Combustible (using AWWA M31 Table 1-2)
Xi= Exposure Factor (using AWWA M31 Table 1-3)

Distance to Exposed Building = 0 -10ft.

For Unprotected passageways, Enclosed Building, 11-20ft from Exposed
Buildings
Pi = 0.3
There fore,
NNF = (Ci)(Oi)(X+P)I
NNF = (862)x (0.85) x [(.22) + (0.3)]
NNF = 381.3 US gpm
Although the NNF is calculated here to be 382 US gpm, table 1-5 of the AWWA M31
states that the NNF for a one and two family dwelling with a separation between 11 and
30 feet is 1000 US gpm or 63L/s (1000 USgpm).
The practical equivalent in terms of the supply available from fire hydrants in Jamaica is
four fire streams from two hydrants capable of supplying 60.6l/s (960USgpm).
Fire Flow Duration
A fire flow duration of 2 hours was used in the distribution model for the proposed
subdivision. This requirement was adapted from Table 1-1 of AWWA M31.
Minimum Residual Pressure
The AWWA M31 recommends a minimum system residual pressure of 138 kPa (20psi)
during fire flow events. However, for practical and economic purposes, the minimum
residual pressure used in Jamaica and adopted for this analysis is 34kPa (5psi) during fire
flow events and 138 kPa (20psi) under normal operating conditions.

Pipe Sizing and Design Criteria
Pipe Sizing and Layout
The water distribution pipelines were designed in the water network modelling software
known as WaterCAD for AutoCAD version 6. Various scenarios were set up including
varying the pipe sizes in the network and the demands to model the factors of average
day conditions that the distribution will experience. Scenarios, where checked to satisfy
the various design criteria.
Initial Pipe Sizing
The pipe sizing and layout for subdivision was done by setting initial pipe sizes based on:

The minimum sizes required supporting the fire hydrant layout. 100mm pipes
(4) pipes are required as a minimum wherever hydrants are present.

Valve bank separate from the water supply to the hydrants

The use of storage tank water to aid firefighting

Modelling
The water modelling software used is known as WaterCAD for AutoCAD version 6. This
software is based on the EPANET software used by many local consulting professionals.
The software has all the capabilities of EPANET with added features enabling the user to
model the network directly in the AutoCAD drawing environment.
Some elements in the network have been simplified for modelling purposes. The various
settings of different elements include:
Reservoir
A reservoir was used to model the existing pipeline pressure. This was achieved by
setting the elevation of the reservoir at a height such that the equivalent pressure of 50psi
was attained at the connection points to the subdivision. This pressure was used because
it represents the off-peak pressure available at the subdivision and it is the pressure
achieved during the water supply tests.
Junction Demands
Junction demands were modeled for using a base demands applied to every unit. A
Junction was also placed at the maintenance point to model requirements there. Table 2
shows the assigned demand values.

Elevations
The subdivision is located on very flat land (approximately 5/1000). For this design, the
differences in elevation were assumed to be negligible.
Tank and Pump
The storage system demands that the stored water be pumped into the system when no
water is available from the NWC pipeline. The pump used in the model is a 4Hp single
phase 220V pump with design conditions of 55usgpm at 110 ft pressure head. Estimated
energy consumption is
Dynamic Modeling
Having assigned junctions, elevations, set up the reservoir and storage, the base demands
were then set. A table of time versus base demand multiplier was done to model the
varying demand from the each junction over time.
This table is set in table 3 below.

Network Analysis and Results

Scenarios
Two dynamic demand scenarios were modeled. This was done so that the demands at the
junctions would model the different conditions including over an entire 24-hour period to
encompass: average demands, 24-hour maximum demands, maximum hour demands.
Dynamic analysis was used for each scenario.
24-hour average demands
The 24-hour average demands were computed and assigned using an average day water
consumption of 272.77L per person and 5 persons per townhouse and adding 20%
additional demand for leaks and losses.
Maximum hour demands
The maximum hour demands were computed by multiplying the 24-hour maximum
demands (expressed per hour) by a factor of 2
Minimum Hour demand
The minimum hour demands were computed by multiplying the 24-hour average
demands (expressed per hour) by a factor of 0.5.
Main Design Conditions
The pipe sizing and layout of the proposed subdivision was deemed reliable if:
1. The minimum pressures stated previously were achieved during the 24-hour
maximum day demand.
2. The maximum pressures stated previously were not exceeded at minimum flow.

Results
The results fro the scenarios are highlighted below, since the main source of firefighting
water will come from the NCWC 4 mainline, no model was done for fire fighting
capabilities.

Discussion of Results
Normal Operating Conditions
Throughout all the normal operating scenarios it was observed that the pressure in the
subdivision remained above the minimum of 20psi and the pressure drop across the
subdivision nominal.

Main Design Conditions

The water supply design of the proposed subdivision was deemed reliable if:
1. The minimum pressures stated previously were achieved during the 24-hour
maximum day demand with maximum fire flow.
2. The maximum pressures stated previously were not exceeded at minimum flow
Both these conditions were achieved throughout all the scenarios examined
Conclusion
All the design criteria set by the designer have been met and the water supply network

within the proposed subdivision is reliable
