niños y mata a cientos de miles al año, sobre todo en los países
en vías de desarrollo; y para evitar las complicaciones en la apli-
cación de las tradicionales vacunas líquidas –como la necesidad
de electricidad para refrigerarlas y agujas esterilizadas para pre-
venir infecciones como el sida y la hepatitis- comenzará a pro-
barse este año en ensayos clínicos, la primera vacuna inhalable
de polvo seco.
Desarrollada por un grupo de investigadores de la Universidad
de Colorado con Robert Sievers a la cabeza, mediante un proceso
conocido como CAN-BD (Carbon Dioxide-Assisted Nebulization
with bubble dryer), la nueva vacuna se administra mediante una
profunda aspiración a un saco de plástico y al llegar directamen-
te a las mucosas, tiene el potencial de ser incluso más eficaz que
los métodos convencionales.
Esperemos que éste sea el inicio de una nueva generación de
inhalables que también resultarán menos dolorosos y traumáti-
cos para los pequeños.
In the fight against measles, which still affects millions of chil-
dren and kills hundreds of thousands each year, mostly in devel-
oping countries; and to avoid complications in the application of
traditional liquid vaccines –such as the need of electricity to re-
frigerate them and sterilized needles to prevent infections, such as
AIDS and hepatitis-, starting this year, the first dry dust inhalable
vaccine will begin being clinically tested.
Developed by a group of researchers from the University of Colo-
rado- led by Robert Sievers- through a process known as CAN-BD
(Carbon Dioxide-Assisted Nebulization with bubble dryer), the
new vaccine is administered through deep inhalation of a plastic
bag and upon arriving directly at the mucosas, it has the potential
of being even more effective than conventional methods.
Let’s hope that this is the beginning of a new generation of in-
halables that will also turn out to be less painful and traumatic
for younger ones.

estado sólido pero de bajísima densidad, compuesta hasta en un

vertido en accidentes y catástrofes.
El aerogel, conocido también como “humo congelado”, absorbe
hasta 7 veces su peso y puede soportar grandes presiones sin colap-
sar, por lo que ha sido utilizado como aislante térmico y se encuentra
actualmente a bordo de la aeronave Stardust, recolectando mues-
tras de polvo interestelar.

black tides- which happen when hydrocarbons are spilled on the sea
and invade the habitat of marine species, getting to the beaches and
coasts, altering and destroying all life in their path, and whose clean-
ing entails a great investment, scientists from Arizona and New Jersey
have discovered that the airgel –a solid, low density substance, made
up of up to 99.8% air- can serve as a sponge to capture the oil spilled
in accidents and catastrophes.

weight and can stand great pressure without collapsing, due to which

The Tasmanian devil, known worldwide because of the famous War-

ner Bros. character “Taz”, has entered the list of endangered species
due to a rare illness that has decreased wild population in over 70%
since 1996.
The animal, apparently aggressive, is in reality shy and harmless for
humans. They can be found only in the island of Tasmania, south of
Australia, and today, it faces the threat of a contagious facial cancer
that causes serious injuries, preventing them from eating and leading
them to starvation.
The devils need help, due to which scientists are trying to identify
the causes for the illness and healthy specimens have been isolated
to avoid total extinction. We trust that the efforts from organizations
such as “Devil in Danger Foundation” will help so that the new genera-
tions get to know the greatest carnivorous marsupial in the world live
and in person and not just as a cartoon character.

que llegaron a nuestro continente nombra-
ron al exótico producto como “Pera de las
Indias” por su forma semejante a la de las
peras ibéricas, sin embargo la deliciosa fru-
ta ya había sido bautizada en náhuatl por el
pueblo azteca como “ahuácatl” que significa
testículo, con seguridad debido al aspecto
colgante del fruto.
Las evidencias muestran que milenios an-
tes de que fuera común en todo el mundo,
el aguacate era bien conocido por el hom-
bre. En una cueva de Coaxcatlán, Puebla, se
encontraron trozos de plantas de aguacate
fosilizados que dan a su consumo una anti-
güedad de al menos 7 mil años.
Las culturas prehispánicas le daban diver-
sos usos. En el Códice Florentino se mencio-
nan tres tipos principales: aoácatl, quilaoá-
catl y tlacacoloácatl, que de acuerdo a su
descripción podrían resultar equivalentes a
las tres especies principales de la planta que
hoy conocemos como mexicana, guatemal-
teca y antillana respectivamente.
Los totonacas que lo llamaban “cucata”,
representaron en el códice Mendocino al ár-
bol con un jeroglífico que hacia referencia al
pueblo de Ahuacatlán.
El término purépecha para designarlo era
“cupanda”; “yashu” la palabra zapoteca uti-
lizada para nombrar al apreciado fruto y en
varias regiones del estado de Chiapas aún es
conocido como “Tzitzito”.
En 1519, durante la conquista, los españoles
mencionaron por primera vez en un docu-
mento escrito a la fruta de deliciosa pulpa.

ca de Martín Fernández de Enciso publicada

(Pear of the Indies) because of its shape simi-
lar to that of Spanish pears; nevertheless, the
delicious fruit had already been baptized in
Náhuatl by the Aztec people as “ahuácatl”,
which means “testicle”, probably because of
its hanging appearance.
Evidence shows that millenniums before
it became common throughout the world,
avocado was well-known by man. In a cave in
Coaxcatlán, Puebla, pieces of fossilized avoca-
do plants were found, dating its consumption
back to at least 7 thousand years ago.
Pre-Hispanic cultures used it in different
ways. In the Florentine Codex, three different
main types are mentioned: aoácatl, quilaoá-
catl and tlacacoloácatl, which according to
their description, could be equivalent to the
three main species of the plant that we know
today as Mexican, Guatemalan and West In-
dian respectively.
The Totonacas who called it “cucata”, repre-
sented the tree in the Mendocino Codex with
a hieroglyphic which makes reference to the
village of Ahuacatlán.
The Purépecha term to name it was “cu-
panda”; “yashu” was the Zapoteca word used
to name the appreciated fruit and in several
regions of the state of Chiapas, it is still known
as “Tzitzito”.
In 1519, during the Conquest, the Spanish
mentioned the delicious pulp fruit for the
first time on a written document. An example
is the “Suma Geográfica” by Martín Fernán-
dez de Enciso, published in Seville, who stated
that “what is inside is like butter, with a deli-
cious flavor and it leaves such a soft and good
taste, that it is wonderful”. By the year 1600,
it was introduced in Spain, from where it
spread out to numerous regions in which the
environmental conditions allowed its devel-
opment, reaching Africa in 1870, India in 1892,
New Zealand in 1910 and Israel in 1930.
In México, prior to the arrival of Europeans,
avocado was already an important part of
the inhabitants’ diet, besides being attribut-
ed certain healing properties and therefore,
it was used by local indigenes in traditional
medicine to eliminate microbes and para-
sites, against scabies and its leaves were used
to make and infusion as an expectorant, be-
sides conceding it aphrodisiac qualities.
In spite of the hundreds of years that have
gone by since then, the industry continues to
benefit from these properties, obtaining oils,
lotions, soaps, creams, cosmetics and sham-
poos from its skin, pulp or pit.
The avocado’s scientific name is American
Persea, and the tree belongs to the Laurace-
ae family, which includes different species of
woody plants, peculiar for their essence, like
laurel, camphor and cinnamon.

en infusión como expectorante, además de
concederle cualidades afrodisíacas.
A pesar de los cientos de años transcu-
rridos desde entonces, la industria sigue
beneficiándose de dichas propiedades, ob-
teniendo aceites, lociones, jabones, cremas,
cosméticos y champús para el cabello de su
piel, pulpa y semilla o hueso.

lombia, Perú, Brasil, Australia, Israel, China,
Kenia, España y Filipinas.
En nuestro país, Michoacán es el estado lí-
der con más del 80% de la cosecha nacional
en sus fértiles tierras.
Pero, ¿Qué hace al aguacate un producto
generador de divisas tan importante para
nuestro país?
Por supuesto la indudable exquisitez de
su sabor, la textura y singular consistencia
y su asombrosa versatilidad culinaria que
ha conquistado paladares en todo el mundo
durante mas de cinco siglos. Sin embargo,
sus grandiosas propiedades nutritivas son
también un factor determinante de la sor-
prendente aceptación a nivel mundial.
Las grasas constituyen el principal compo-
nente tras el agua, pero éstas son mayorita-
riamente monoinsaturadas y la pulpa posee
la extraordinaria facultad de ayudar a elimi-
nar el colesterol “malo”.
Libre de sodio, es la fruta que mas fibra
dietética contiene, rica en vitaminas del gru-
po B como la B6 o piridoxina que colabora al
buen funcionamiento del sistema nervioso,
en ácido fólico, glutamina y vitamina E cuya
acción antioxidante interviene en la estabili-
dad de las células sanguíneas.
Con alto contenido de proteínas de alta
calidad y carbohidratos, es también rico en
minerales como el magnesio y potasio vin-
culados a la actividad muscular y al correcto
funcionamiento del intestino, nervios, hue-
sos y dientes.
Se sabe también que combate la dermati-
tis y las arrugas en la piel, de su capacidad
antinflamatoria y equilibrante del azúcar en
la sangre así como de su acción en la reduc-
ción del riesgo de desarrollar arteroesclero-
sis, asma y artritis reumatoide.
En México, a pesar de formar parte de infi-
nidad de recetas, muchas veces se consume
fresco, en forma de ensalada o como el per-
fecto acompañante de carnes rojas y blancas,
si bien abundan los guisos servidos como
botanas, entradas, sopas, platos fuertes y
hasta postres. Sin embargo, es el guacamole,
del náhuatl ahuacamolli que significa sopa
o salsa de aguacate, el símbolo internacional
de la comida mexicana.

México is the main avocado producer in the
world, with over 34% of the total production,
exceeding one million tons a year, followed
by the United States, Chile, South Africa, Do-
minican Republic, Colombia, Peru, Brazil,
Australia, Israel, China, Kenya, Spain and the
Philippines.
In our country, Michoacán is the top pro-
ducing state, with over 80% of the national
harvest on its fertile lands.
But, what makes avocado such an impor-
tant foreign currency generator product for
our country? Of course, the unquestionable
exquisiteness of its flavor, the texture and pe-
culiar consistency and its amazing culinary
versatility which has conquered palates all
around the world for over five centuries. Nev-
ertheless, its great nutritional qualities are
also a decisive factor in its surprising accep-
tance worldwide.
Fats are the main components after water,
but these are mostly monounsaturated and
the pulp offers the extraordinary quality of
eliminating “bad” cholesterol.
Free of sodium, it is the fruit with the most
dietary fiber, rich in B vitamins, like B6 or
pyridoxine, which contributes to enhance the
nervous system function; folic acid, glutamine
and vitamin E, whose antioxidant properties

dratación del aguacate, que en esta presen-
tación es hoy exportado a diversas partes del
mundo como Guatemala y Canadá.
La idea de crear el polvo de aguacate del
tipo Hass, surgió por la preocupación del
científico en relación al poco tiempo con que
se cuenta para exportarlo, manteniendo su
frescura, lo que ocasionaba graves pérdidas
a los productores. De color verde y con sus
características y propiedades esenciales, el
polvo conserva su sabor y puede ser guarda-

Entre los llamados deportes extremos hay
diversas actividades con un nivel de riesgo
variable, que sin embargo tienen en común,
el no estar pensadas para personas con co-
razón débil o sin condición física. Surgen tal
vez, de la necesidad que tiene el ser huma-
no de sentir que se encuentra en riesgo para
que la adrenalina fluya en su sistema circula-
torio y en ese instante, tener plena concien-
cia del hecho de estar vivo. Este deseo es más
evidente en las personas que, con una vida
sedentaria y rutinaria tienen el imperativo
de modificar ese estado, y es positivo cuando
significa un reto que les lleva a superarse y
desarrollar nuevas facetas de su personali-
dad; así, los deportes extremos alcanzan su
autentica dimensión.
Dentro de las actividades recreativas con
ciertas condiciones de peligrosidad, está el
montañismo, con variantes como la escala-
da y el rapel. La primera es una actividad que
consiste en realizar ascensos sobre paredes
de fuerte pendiente valiéndose de la fuerza
física y mental, empleando no sólo las pier-
nas sino de manera importante los brazos.
Para tener seguridad, se aconseja usar equi-
po de protección apropiado y una buena
condición física.

Among the so-called extreme sports, there
are many activities with a variable level of
risk, although what they all have in common
is that they weren´t created for those with
a weak heart or those who aren´t in good
physical shape. Perhaps they were created
because of the need that human beings have
of feeling at risk, so that adrenaline can flow
through their circulatory system and at that
precise instant, they have total conscience
of being alive. This desire is more evident in
people who, leading a sedentary and unad-
venturous life, have the imperative of modi-
fying that state, and it can be positive when
it represents a challenge that leads them to
excel themselves and develop new sides of
their personality; that is how extreme sports
achieve their true dimension.
Within recreational activities with certain
danger conditions we find mountaineering,
with such variables as climbing and rappel-
ling. The first one is an activity that involves
climbing very steep walls making use of physi-
cal and mental strength, making use not only
of the legs but also- and quite importantly- of
the arms. To be safe, we advise to make use of
the appropriate protection equipment and to
be in good physical shape.

tinta la escalada en hielo de la escalada en
roca. Entre la escalada en roca y la de rocódro-
mo no hay mucha diferencia de técnica bási-
ca, por lo que esta última se utiliza muchas
veces como entrenamiento; sin embargo la

Depending on the environment you are
climbing on, you choose the techniques and
equipment to be used. It is quite different
to ice climb than to rock climb. There isn’t
much basic technical difference between rock
climbing and indoor climbing, due to which
the latter is frequently used as training; how-
ever, rock climbing demands more physical
and technical resources. Safety equipment
must include: harness, express tapes, cara-
biners (locking and non-locking), dynamic
rope, magnesium, climbing shoes, long tape,
gri gris and helmet. It is extremely important
to take the correct material for each type of
climbing, taking into consideration the kind
of rock, the area´s graduation and the condi-
tion of the existing anchors.
Rappelling or rapel (from the French rap-
pel) is a system of descent with a rope used
in vertical surfaces. It is done in places where
descent in any other way is complicated or
unsafe and it only requires –besides knowing
the correct technique- to be wearing mini-

con 1830 metros de altura y preciosas cas-
cadas. A 9.5 km. al sur de Monterrey, está el
Parque Nacional Cumbres de Monterrey con
una masa gigante de 305 metros llamada el
Cañón y en Tuxtla Gutiérrez, capital de Chia-
pas, el Parque Nacional El Sumidero con pa-
redes verticales ideales para rapelear.
Las condiciones en la Riviera Maya, la con-
vierten en el destino ideal para quien se
siente inclinado por disfrutar de esta mane-
ra de la naturaleza. Parte de la hidrografía al
sureste del país son las corrientes subterrá-
neas que forman depósitos conocidos como
cenotes, cavernas a cielo abierto por las que
penetran los rayos del sol, que nos muestran
los multicolores de la roca caliza y en oca-
siones, se descubren piezas de cerámica y
vestigios mayas, así como la fauna acuática
que habita en esas profundidades. Entre los
más bellos y populares podemos mencionar:
Zací (significa “Gavilán blanco” por la urbe
prehispánica sobre la cual se fundó la actual
ciudad de Valladolid), en donde la entrada
de la luz que se filtra a través de las copas de

no sólo de ver la naturaleza sino de sentirla
en toda su magnificencia y que desean rom-
per con lo común y cotidiano, es momento
de prepararse y poner a prueba su destreza,
de aventurarse y descubrir los más maravi-
llosos paisajes desde las alturas o en las pro-
fundidades.

the best places for cave diving in the state and

noon, the sun enters through a hole and il-
luminates the clear water.
So, for reckless travelers, who not only love
to observe nature, but also to feel it in all its
magnificence and wish to escape from the or-
dinary and everyday things, it’s the moment
to prepare themselves and test their skill, ven-
ture and discover the most wonderful land-
scapes from up high or from way deep.

En busca de propues-
tas turís-
ticas y sitios de interés en nuestra ciudad,
cayó por casualidad en mis manos un folleto
del Instituto Nacional de Antropología e His-
toria (inah). Llamó mi atención un recorrido
de un día que invita al turista a un paseo por
la casa de quien, bajo el gobierno del Gene-
ral Porfirio Díaz con motivo del Centenario
de la Independencia de México, realizara el
diseño definitivo del monumento alusivo: el
Arquitecto Antonio Rivas Mercado y su Án-
gel de la Independencia. La ruta continúa
hacia la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Án-
geles, construída en el S XVI en San Diego
Churubusco, Coyoacán, y concluye con una
más informal pero entretenida visita a “Los
Ángeles”, enclavado en la calle de Lerdo 206
del popular barrio de Tlatelolco y que es el
Salón de Baile mas antiguo de la capital, que
gozara de gran auge en la época de los 40
y 50 y en donde se mantiene la tradición de
interpretar el danzón y el mambo.

Looking for tourist pro-
posals and
places of interest in our city, a leaflet from
the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e His-
toria (inah) (National Institute for Anthropol-
ogy and History) fell into my hands by coin-
cidence. A one-day visit called my attention,
a stroll around the house of whom under
General Porfirio Díaz’s government on the oc-
casion of the Centenary of the Mexican Inde-
pendence, made the final design of the allu-
sive monument: the Architect Antonio Rivas
Mercado and his Ángel de la Independencia
(Independence Angel). The route continues to-
wards the church Nuestra Señora de los Ánge-
les, built in the 16th in San Diego Churubusco,
Coyoacán, and ends in a more informal but
amusing visit to “Los Ángeles”, situated in 206
Lerdo Street in the popular neighborhood of
Tlatelolco, which is the oldest ballroom in the
capital, its boom was in the 1940s and 1950s
and it still preserves the tradition of playing
“danzón” and “mambo”.
Perhaps the attractiveness of this peculiar
itinerary is the great difference between these
three angels and the fact that they belong to
the same México that in its diversity shows
the richness of people that can be both sober
and festive at the same time.
The house of Rivas Mercado in 45 Héroes
Street in the Colonia Guerrero turned into
news as a result of the proposal to restore it
to turn it into the headquarters of the Fun-
dación Conmemoraciones 2010 A.C. (Founda-
tion for the 2010 Commemorations), which is
to be in charge of the divulging acts, such as
conferences, debates and exhibitions on the
occasion of the Bicentenary of the Mexican
Independence and the Centenary of the Mexi-
can Revolution.
Originally, the luxurious 1567 square-meter-
residence, stood out for its decorative richness
made with classical, Moorish and Art Nouveau
elements. Rivas Mercado himself designed his
fifteen-room palace with a “Torre del Porve-
nir” (Future Tower) from where he witnessed
the Decena Trágica (Tragic Ten-days).
Rivas Mercado, who was director of the
prestigious Academia de San Carlos and who
also created the emblematic Angel, the House
of the Wax Museum, and the Teatro Juárez in
Guanajuato, is also remembered because of
his daughter Antonieta, consummated pa-
tron of México’s culture in the 20th century
by whose initiative, literary halls, experimen-
tal theatre and the Symphonic Orchestra of
México City arose, and who also impelled
writers like Novo, Villaurrutia, Gorostiza and
He-nestrosa, as well as painters like Diego

La casa de Rivas Mercado en la calle de
Héroes No. 45 en la Colonia Guerrero, se con-
virtió en noticia a raíz de la propuesta de
rehabilitarla para funcionar como sede de
la Fundación Conmemoraciones 2010 A.C.,
encargada de realizar actos de divulgación,
como ciclos de conferencias, coloquios y ex-
posiciones con motivo de la celebración del
Bicentenario de la Independencia y el Cente-
nario de la Revolución.
Originalmente, la lujosa residencia de 1567
metros cuadrados, se distinguió por la rique-
za de su decoración conformada por elemen-
tos clásicos, moriscos y característicos del Art
Nouveau. El propio Rivas Mercado diseñó su
palacio de 15 habitaciones con una “Torre del
Porvenir”, desde donde fue testigo de la De-
cena Trágica.
Mercado, quien fuera director de la pres-
tigiada Academia de San Carlos y constru-
yera además del emblemático Ángel, la
Casa del Museo de Cera y el Teatro Juárez de
Guanajuato, es también recordado por su
hija Antonieta, consumada mecenas de la
cultura en México en el siglo XX de cuya ini-
ciativa surgieran salones literarios, teatro
experimental y la Orquesta Sinfónica de la
Ciudad de México, y que impulsó literatos
como Novo, Villaurrutia, Gorostiza y Henes-
trosa, así como pintores de la talla de Diego
Rivera, José Clemente Orozco y Frida Kahlo.
Desgraciadamente, cobró trágica fama
al quitarse la vida en la Catedral de Notre
Dame en París, tras la decepción sufrida al
término de su relación con José Vasconce-
los, Secretario de Educación y candidato a

The first angel of México inaugurated by
Don Porfirio Díaz on the 16th of September,
1910, was made up of a column with pedes-
tal and plinth surrounded by a decorated
esplanade with pinnacles and an entrance
staircase, bronze sculptures that evoke law,
war, justice and peace; a lion at the access of
the mausoleum leads to the very angel that
finishes off the monument and represents a
winged victory that holds a laurel wreath in
one hand and a piece of chain in the other.
The figure, of smelt bronze covered with gold,
keeps the mortal remains of great heroes like
Vicente Guerrero, Guadalupe Victoria, Miguel
Hidalgo, Ignacio Allende, José Ma. Morelos
and Leona Vicario, amongst others.
After the 1957 earthquake, it had to be re-
stored and the head replaced because it was
broken into pieces when it fell during the
movement. It has been renovated three more
times as a consequence of the sinking of the
surrounding area, which has caused that only
9 of the 23 steps in the staircase are original.
The second stop in of our stroll is part of the
Marian triptych of the city. The history of the
Santuario de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles
goes back to 1580, after a great flood when
a painting of Virgin Mary came to the place,
rescued from the mud by an indigenous ca-
cique by the name of Tzayoque who built her

La segunda escala del paseo forma parte
del tríptico mariano de la ciudad. La historia
del Santuario de Nuestra Señora de los Án-
geles se remonta a 1580, cuando después de
una gran inundación, llegó al lugar una pin-
tura al óleo de la Virgen María, rescatada del
lodo por un noble cacique indígena de nom-
bre Tzayoque que le construyó una capilla
con pared de adobe. La imagen la muestra
parada sobre una luna con el Espíritu Santo
sosteniendo su corona y como halo lumino-
so, un sol a su espalda. Su nombre obedece al
coro angélico y querubines que la rodean.
El convento estuvo originalmente al cuida-
do de los frailes dieguinos, congregación de-
rivada de la orden de San Francisco. En 1808,
se levantó la actual iglesia en la que contras-
ta la pobreza arquitectónica de la fachada
con la incomparable belleza neoclásica del
interior y que ha sido atribuida al arquitecto
y escultor español Manuel Tolsá.
El templo fue restaurado entre 1934 y 1942
y cuenta con 8 retablos del siglo XVIII y una
colección de valiosas pinturas en el coro.

brilliant halo. Her name is due to the angelic
chorus and cherubs that surround her.
The convent was originally guarded by the
Dieguino-friars, a congregation derived from
the San Francisco order. In 1808, the current
church was erected, in which the architec-
tural scarcity of the façade contrasts with the
incomparable neoclassical beauty of the inte-
rior and that has been attributed to Spanish
architect and sculptor Manuel Tolsá.
The temple was restored between 1934 and
1942; it has 8 altarpieces from the 18th cen-
tury and a collection of valuable paintings at
the choir.
In the convent group, next to the temple,
bullet inlaids can be seen as a memory of
the Battle of Churubusco held against North
American troops in 1847. One of the bloodiest
actions has been immortalized by the phrase
pronounced by General Pedro María Anaya
as a response to the question made by Gen-
eral Twiggs: ¿Where are the bullets? To which
Anaya calmly answered:”If there were any,
you wouldn’t be here”.
The convent was declared Historical Monu-
ment in 1861 and in 1981 was turned into the
Museo Nacional de las Intervenciones (Na-
tional Museum of the Interventions), har-
bouring collections from the invasions that
México suffered along the 19th century and
the beginning of the twentieth century by
Spain, France and the United States. The tem-
ple continues to serve the Catholic worship.

Perhaps the attractive-

En el conjunto conventual a un lado del
Templo, pueden apreciarse incrustaciones
de balas como recuerdo de la Batalla de
Churubusco contra tropas norteamericanas
en 1847. Una de las acciones más sangrientas
de la contienda ha sido inmortalizada por la
frase pronunciada por el General Pedro Ma-
ría Anaya en respuesta a la pregunta del Ge-
neral norteamericano Twiggs: “¿Dónde está
el parque (balas)?” a lo que Anaya respondió
serenamente: “Si hubiera parque, no estaría
usted aquí”.
El convento fue declarado Monumento
Histórico en 1861 y en 1981, se convirtió en el
Museo Nacional de las Intervenciones, alber-
gando colecciones sobre las invasiones que
padeció México a lo largo del siglo XIX y prin-
cipios del XX por parte de España, Francia y

The last angel of our journey is a 70 year-
old hall and that is an important part of the
traditional music of our metropolis.
It was inaugurated in August 2nd, 1937 in
a very different México in which dance halls
were abundant: El Colonia, El Riviera and the
California Dancing Club; the latter and Los
Ángeles are the only ones still open today.
In that time, every evening more than 2000
people elegantly attired went to dance.
Families and whole generations have
passed through the dance floor and its history
is blended with that of the large city, receiving
great musicians, distinguished writers, art-
ists and intellectuals as José Saramago, Ga-
briel García Márquez, Carlos Fuentes, Yolanda
Montes “Tongolelé” and María Rojo, but most
of all, real dancers from all classes and social
sectors. In 2007, “Los Ángeles” celebrated its
70th anniversary with a program of musi-
cians of great quality as the Internacional
Sonora Santanera and Pepe Arévalo.
If you have never visited a place like this,
you have missed a great night party and the
chance to see real professionals moving to
the rhythm of danzón and mambo, as well as
listening to quality music that never goes out
fashion.
It is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 6
to 11 pm, and twice a week, classes are given
to learn how to control time, rhythm, steps
and even looks, so as not to become inhibited
when the time to jump to the dance floor
comes.
To conclude with the description of the fas-
cinating journey, I will make the slogan of the
danzón hall mine just to confirm that our
people’s expression of grandeur and opulence
allows us to be amazed in any corner and be-
fore the most uncommon displays.

Inagurado el 2 de agosto de 1937 en un
México distinto al de hoy, en que abundaban
las salas de baile como El Colonia, El Riviera
y el California Dancing Club, que es el único
que junto con Los Ángeles hoy permanece
abierto. En esa época, cada tarde acudían
más de 2000 personas elegantemente ata-
viadas a bailar.
Por la pista han desfilado familias y gene-
raciones y su historia se mezcla con la de la
gran urbe acogiendo a grandes músicos, ilus-
tres literatos, artistas e intelectuales como
José Saramago, Gabriel García Márquez,
Carlos Fuentes, Yolanda Montes “Tongolele”
y María Rojo, pero sobre todo a consumados
bailarines de todas las clases y sectores so-
ciales. En el 2007, “Los Ángeles” celebró su
70º aniversario con un cartel en el que alter-
naron músicos de la categoría de La Interna-
cional Sonora Santanera y Pepe Arévalo.
Si nunca ha visitado un sitio como éste,
se ha perdido de una gran noche de fiesta
y la oportunidad de ver a verdaderos profe-
sionales moviéndose al ritmo del danzón y
el mambo así como de escuchar música de
calidad que nunca pasa de moda.
Además de estar abierto de martes a do-
mingo de 6 a 11 de la noche, dos veces por
semana se imparten clases para aprender a
dominar tiempos, ritmos, pasos y hasta mi-
radas para no cohibirse en el momento de
saltar a la pista.
Para concluir con la descripción del fas-
cinante recorrido, he de apropiarme del
slogan del recinto del danzón sólo para re-
afirmar que la grandiosidad y opulencia de
la expresión de nuestro pueblo nos permite
maravillarnos en cualquier rincón y ante las
más inusitadas manifestaciones.

sobre su género, si es que lo tiene), no es más
que una red informática mundial que con-
siste en ordenadores conectados entre sí por
medio del cual personas, organismos y em-
presas localizan, seleccionan e intercambian
información. Su origen se remonta a 1969,
con la creación de una red entre algunas
universidades de California y Utah en Esta-
dos Unidos, y que en apariencia obedeció al
propósito inicial de encontrar alguna forma
de mantener el contacto en la eventualidad

zados de Defensa (DARPA por sus siglas en
inglés), responsable de nuevas tecnologías
para uso militar, esta primera conexión re-
cibió el nombre de ARPANET y en pocas dé-
cadas, además del cambio de nombre a IN-
TERNET (International Network) pasó de ser
un enlace entre unas cuantas máquinas, a
engarzar a mil cien millones de usuarios re-
gistrados el año pasado, con el pronóstico de
que hacia el 2015, la cantidad de navegantes
superará los dos mil millones.
Contrario a la creencia popular, Internet
no es sinónimo de “WWW” (World Wide
Web). La Web es sólo uno de los muchos ser-
vicios ofertados en Internet y de mucho más
reciente creación, desarrollado a fines de los
años 80 por Tim Berners Lee.
El acceso remoto a otras máquinas, la trans-
ferencia e intercambio de archivos, el correo
y boletines electrónicos, las conversaciones
en línea, la mensajería instantánea, la radio,
televisión y videos a la carta, el comercio y la
banca electrónica y los multijuegos, son sólo
algunas de las muchas otras opciones más
disponibles en Internet.
Podríamos resumir en 4 las áreas en que la
vida cotidiana del hombre se ha visto impac-
tada con verdadera fuerza por el ingenioso
invento; el conocimiento, el ocio, el trabajo y
la comunicación.
El inmediato acceso a una inimagina-
ble cantidad de información, es la primera
y más agraciada cara que el monstruo nos
muestra. La disponibilidad y variedad de re-
cursos no tiene comparación con las biblio-
tecas tradicionales y enciclopedias (aunque
fueran ilustradas) a las que recurríamos los
que nos educamos hace un par de décadas.
Lo mismo puede decirse del ambiente que
rodea al proceso de adquisición de cultura.

We could sum up the 4 areas of man’s ev-
eryday life which have had the greatest im-
pact from this clever invention: knowledge,
leisure time, work and communication.
The immediate access to an unimaginable
amount of information is the first and most
graceful face that the monster shows us. The
availability and variety of resources has no
comparison with traditional libraries and en-
cyclopedias (even illustrated ones) to which
we resorted to a couple of decades ago. The
same could be said of the environment sur-
rounding the process of acquiring culture. Ac-
cording to education professionals, it is possi-
ble to learn more when more senses are used
and the benefit increases thanks to taking
part in a new virtual society of which all the
characters involved are part of, whether it
be students, teachers, tutors, directors
or parents. The environ-
ment also helps the

more productive,
audacious or creative.

Respecto al trabajo, atrás quedaron las jor-
nadas de 9 a 6 en la oficina. Las conexiones
inalámbricas y de alta velocidad en hote-
les, cibercafés, aeropuertos y universidades,
convierten cualquier lugar en un despacho
o negocio móvil. Podemos laborar a toda
hora y en conjunto, con quien esté sentado
frente a un servidor al otro lado del mundo.
Las opciones de buscar y encontrar empleo
se multiplican, los blogs y páginas web se
constituyen en un aparador para las empre-
sas, y el concepto de oficina sin papeles sim-
plifica el ejercicio de las actividades además
de contribuir al cuidado de los recursos na-
turales. Internet ha impulsado la economía
global, pero algún precio habría que pagar,
pienso cada vez que cierro y rechazo la pu-
blicidad interactiva que me bombardea que
por otra parte es igual de molesta que el te-
lemercadeo.
Por último, los servicios de mayor uso en
Internet, son la mensajería instantánea o
chat y el E-mail.
La crítica y especulación al respecto era de
esperarse; ¡Tan bien que se sentía recibir una
carta a través del servicio postal!
Al crecer la red, es lógico que aumente la
posibilidad de establecer más relaciones vir-
tuales entre las personas, con la consecuente
disminución del contacto cara a cara. Pero la
sensación de los usuarios no es de soledad,
los rodea el mundo entero y la presencia so-
cial parece medirse en función del número
de contactos, los conozcas o no.
Recientemente he recibido múltiples in-
vitaciones para formar parte de grupos de
gente sobre la que no se nada. Creí que la

La joya más brillante en la corona del

Bayou se ubica al sureste del estado de
Lousiana, bañada por las aguas del Río
Mississippi.

El visitante primerizo

llarse en problemas al tratar de comprender
una ciudad como Nueva Orleans. No sólo en
el aspecto arquitectónico, que la vuelve un
punto y aparte de la fórmula Freeway Nation
repetida hasta el cansancio en miles de pue-
blos anónimos e idénticos, sino como una en-
tidad aparte, alejada del convencionalismo y
digna representante del mestizaje cultural.
Como Nueva Orleans no hay dos. Es una ciu-
dad que se ve distinta, sabe como ninguna
otra, huele de una manera completamente
diferente al resto de Estados Unidos. Por sus
calles se respira un particular “joie de vivre”,
herencia directa de su pasado creole y cajun.
La joya más brillante en la corona del Bayou

Fundada por los franceses en 1718, formó
parte de sus colonias de ultramar, hasta que
el Tratado de París los obligó a cederla a la

find himself in trou-
ble upon trying to understand a city like New
Orleans. Not just in its architectural aspect,
which sets it apart from the Freeway Na-
tion formula, repeated over and over again
in thousands of anonymous and identical
towns, but also as a separate entity, away
from conventionalism and worthy represen-
tative of the cultural crossbreeding. There’s
not another like New Orleans. It’s a city that
looks different, has a taste like no other, and
smells completely different to the rest of the
United States. On its streets, you can breathe
a particular joie de vivre, direct heritage of its
Creole and Cajun past. The brightest jewel in
the Bayou crown is located to the southeast
of the state of Louisiana, bathed by the wa-
ters of the Mississippi River.
Founded by the French in 1718, it was part of
their overseas colonies until the Treaty of Par-
is forced them to cede it to the Spanish Crown.

músico mediocre y extraviado en el dolor, se
difuminó a orillas del Mississippi sin que na-
die supiera nada más de él durante mucho
tiempo. Cuando Robert Johnson fue visto de
nuevo, algo había cambiado en él. Su mirada
ya no le pertenecía y sus dedos, otrora largos
y torpes, se convirtieron en habilísimas lan-
zas para rasguear la guitarra. De la noche a
la mañana, con un poco de ayuda diabólica,
se convirtió en el mejor guitarrista de blues.
La de Johnson es una de las muchas leyen-
das orlennianas relacionadas con la música.
Se le reconoce internacionalmente como la
capital del jazz, el lugar en donde Jelly Roll
Morton se autoproclamó (y con justa razón)
como inventor de este género. La historia del
jazz en Nueva Orleans se remonta a la crea-
ción de Storyville en 1897. Éste era el distrito
rojo de la ciudad donde la prostitución era
tolerada; y como ya sabemos que donde hay
burdeles hay músicos, una cosa llevó a la otra
y el jazz se impuso como un ritmo popular
entre la comunidad negra de la ciudad. En
1917 durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, las
autoridades decidieron demoler el barrio, lo
que significó la migración de muchos músi-
cos de jazz hacia Nueva York y Chicago. Esto
supondría otro giro importante en el rumbo
de este género, cambiante y experimental

cajun para bailar, o el Howlin’Wolf, un garito
de jazz forjado con tradición y años de ha-
cer ruido. Dependiendo de la época del año,
se pueden encontrar distintos festivales de
música: desde el festival Primaveral de Jazz,
hasta el encuentro Voodoo de Otoño, pasan-
do por el autogestionado Festival Foburg de
música indie o el apogeo carnavalesco de
Mardi Gras en febrero, la fiesta más colorida,

The devil´s music

Legend tells that it was in the outskirts of
New Orleans where Robert Johnson sold his
soul to the devil. After losing his wife a few
months earlier, a mediocre and grief-stricken
musician disappeared on the bank of the
Mississippi without anybody hearing from
him for a long time. When Robert Johnson
was seen again, something inside him had

changed. His look was absent and his fingers,

once long and clumsy, became skillful spears
to strum the guitar. Overnight, with a little
diabolical help, he turned into the best blues
guitar player.
Johnson’s is one of the many legends of
New Orleans related to music. It is interna-
tionally renowned as the capital of jazz, the
place where Jelly Roll Morton self-proclaimed
(deservedly) as the creator of this genre. The
history of jazz in New Orleans dates back to
the creation of Storyville in 1897. This was the
city’s red district where prostitution was tol-
erated; and as we already know that where
there are brothels there are musicians, one
thing led to another and jazz was established
as a popular rhythm among the city’s black
community. In 1917 during the First World War,
authorities decided to demolish the neighbor-
hood, which meant the migration of many
jazz musicians to New York and Chicago. This
would involve another important turn in this
genre’s direction, changing and experimental

ing live music. In it, they recommend bars like
Mulate’s, with wonderful Cajun dance music
or Howlin’ Wolf, a jazz joint created through
tradition and years of making noise. Depend-
ing on the time of the year, we can find dif-
ferent music festivals: from the Spring Jazz
Festival to the Autumn Voodoo Fest, the self-
managed Foburg Indie Musical Festival or the
carnival zenith of the Mardi Gras on February,
the largest, most co-lorful and fun celebration
in the country.

The cuisine’s sacred trinity

One of the most highly appreciated fea-
tures from the culture of New Orleans is its
celebrated mixed race cuisine, a culinary
fusion in which the combination of flavors
and smells transform the traditional south-
ern dishes into authentic works of art. Cajun
cuisine sways between the typical American
rural food and the French-Canadian country
taste, whose flavor is based on home-grown
products, the sacred trinity of Louisiana: cel-
ery, peppers and onion. Its main contribu-
tions are the jambalaya (a dish made with
rice, ham, chicken, giant prawns and pepper)
or the crawfish étoufée. On the other hand,
Creole cuisine has a more urban origin, with

give the Creole cuisine its typical spicy and
strong flavor. Among the favorite dishes are
the succulent gumbo and the Creole shrimp.
Another highly valued dish is fried crocodile,
a local specialty that one seldom has the op-
portunity to savor. And to finish off, why not
eat a delicious beignet? typical French style
bread rolls accompanied by a cup of hot café
au lait New Orleans style: mixing coffee with
chicory for a unique taste.
New Orleans has over 3,000 restaurants of
different kinds and cuisines, thus completing
an enviable food offer.

The old quarter

The quintessential tourist area is also
known as Vieux Carré (old quarter in French),
the oldest area in the city. Despite its proxim-
ity to the Mississippi River and the damages
suffered in 2005 due to of Hurricane Katrina,
the “Quarter” still maintains its beauty intact.
The architectural style of the area reveals its
pre-American origin: most of the buildings
were built before Louisiana became part of
the States, and although the great fire of 1788
destroyed most of the French colonial build-
ings, the classic and charming style of the co-
lonial Spanish splendor is preserved. The most
famous street in the neighborhood, Bourbon

e n 1953, Agustín Lara vivía en la colonia
Polanco, en la esquina de Homero y Ed-
gar Allan Poe. Ahí tenía su piano y su nidito
de amor al lado de Yiyí Gasca, una hermosa
joven que bien podría haber sido su nieta.
También tenía una casa en Veracruz –la fa-
mosa Casita Blanca–, un par de automóviles,
un chofer alemán, un cocinero chino, dos sir-
vientes y un inseparable asistente al que lla-
maba “Verduguillo”. Canciones como “Arrán-
came la vida”, “Piensa en mí”, “Veracruz”,
“Granada”, “La Cumbancha” y “Solamente
una vez” lo habían hecho famoso, no sólo en
México, sino también en el resto de América
e incluso en Europa; ese año viajaría por
primera vez a España. Finalmente la
vida le sonreía y con una sonrisa de
sandía.
Porque Agustín Lara sufrió mu-
cho durante los prime-
ros años. Su padre, lo
echó de la casa por ha-
ber llegado tarde de una
corrida de toros, des-
pués iría a sacarlo del
burdel donde se ganaba
la vida tocando el piano y
por último lo metería a una
escuela militar, a él que era
flaco, enfermizo y sobre todo
bohemio. Sin embargo, cuando
sobrevino la Revolución, segu-
ramente para escapar del
padre, se unió a las tropas
de Pancho Villa. Su pri-
mer matrimonio –a los
diecinueve años– resultó
un fracaso y, por si fuera poco,

time. Finally, life was smiling at him
with a big smile.
Agustín Lara suffered a lot
during his first years: his
father threw him out of
the house because he re-
turned home late from
a bullfight; later on, he
would go and get him out
of a brothel where he earned
a living playing the piano
and would finally put him
in a military school, he who
was thin, sickly and above
all, bohemian. Never-
theless, when the Revo-
lution came, most cer-
tainly to escape from
his father, he joined the
troops of Pancho Villa.

No obstante, esta mujer no sólo marcaría su
rostro sino el principio de su carrera, pues a
ella dedicaría una de sus primeras piezas:

A lo largo de su vida escribió medio millar
de canciones, lo que generó una enorme ri-
queza compartida con una larga e intermi-
nable lista de artistas: Maruca Pérez, Pedro

back at the brothels, a woman made a cut on
his left cheek with a broken bottle in a fit of
jealousy. Nevertheless, this woman would not
only mark his face but also the beginning of
his career, for he would dedicate to her one of
his first songs: “Marucha”.
Throughout his life, he wrote around 500
songs, which generated enormous wealth
that was shared with a long and endless list
of artists: Maruca Pérez, Pedro Vargas, Juan
Arvizu, Ana María Fernández, Ramón Armen-
god, Toña la Negra, the Hermanas Águila, the
Orquesta de Solistas... Recently, Enrique Here-
dia, leader of the Flamenco group La Barbería
del Sur, promoted his first solo record, “El Úl-
timo Beso” (The Last Kiss), an album in which
the songs of “El Flaco de Oro”, performed by a
cantaor, bring more sense than ever to that
verse in “Granada” that reads: “Mi cantar se
vuelve gitano/cuando es para tí” (my song be-

Vargas, Juan Arvizu, Ana María Fernández,
Ramón Armengod, Toña la Negra, las Herma-
nas Águila, La Orquesta de Solistas… Recien-
temente Enrique Heredia, “El Negri”, líder del
grupo flamenco La Barbería del Sur, Promo-
cionó de su primer disco en solitario, El últi-
mo beso, un álbum en el que los temas del
“Flaco de Oro”, interpretados por un cantaor,
le dan más sentido que nunca a ese verso de
“Granada” que dice: “mi cantar se vuelve gi-
tano / cuando es para ti”.
A diferencia de otros compositores de su
tiempo, su poesía no era de despecho, ni de
perdedores o borracheras. Agustín Lara era
un caballero obsesivamente pulcro y elegan-
te, tanto en su vestir como en sus composi-
ciones, versos como éste de “Noche criolla”
son prueba de ello: “noche que se desmaya
sobre la arena / mientras canta la playa su
inútil pena.” En su estilo jarocho, rumbero
y trovador de veras siempre dignificó a las
mujeres: “vende caro tu amor / aventure-
ra (…) y aquél que de tu boca /la miel quie-
ra / que pague con brillantes / tu pecado”.
Y aunque grandes cantantes interpretaban
sus canciones, nadie lo hacía mejor que él;
su dicción era impecable y su sentimiento
único; más allá del sentido de las palabras,
parecía disfrutar de los sonidos propios de
la lengua y sobre todo de las combinaciones
que él mismo hacía con ellos: “última carca-
jada de la Cumbancha / llévale mis tristezas
y mis cantares”.
El día de su muerte –el 6 de noviembre de
1970– todo el país seguía los detalles del fu-
neral por la radio y la televisión. En la ciudad
de México, la gente se volcó a las calles y las

unique; beyond the
sense of the words,
he seemed to enjoy

era como un grupo de lanchas abriéndose
paso en un mar de gente que había conver-
tido al Palacio de Bellas Artes en una isla. Ahí
se le rindieron todos los homenajes posibles
antes de llevarlo a la Rotonda de los Hom-
bres Ilustres, en el Panteón de Dolores.
Lo dicho hasta aquí no es más que un pe-
queño homenaje a la obra y la persona de
Agustín Lara con motivo de su 40º aniversa-
rio luctuoso. Sin embargo, a pesar de que so-
bre el “Flaco de Oro” se ha escrito mucho, aún
está por escribirse una biografía a la altura
de tan singular personaje, un compositor
cuya carrera se desarrolló al mismo tiempo
que la radio, nuevo medio de comunicación
del que habría de ser protagonista durante
los años cuarenta, cincuenta y sesenta, dé-
cadas en las que México vivía una época do-
rada, una especie de película de cuya banda
sonora Agustín Lara se volvería pieza clave.
Y no es en los bronces que con su esbelta
figura existen en la Ciudad de México, Ve-
racruz, La Habana, Madrid, Granada, Sevilla
o Los Angeles donde sigue vivo sino en sus
canciones; la música no sólo fue el canal por
donde fluyó su talento sino el camino hacia
la inmortalidad.

On the day of his death –November 6, 1970-
the whole country followed the funeral details
by radio or television. In México City, people
went out on the streets and filled them up in
such a way that the funeral cortège was like
a group of boats making their way through a
sea of people that had turned the Palace of
Fine Arts into an island. There, all the possible
homages were paid before taking him to the
Distinguished Men Rotunda, at the Cemetery
of Dolores.
Everything that has been said up till now
is nothing more than a small homage to the
work and the person of Agustín Lara, to mark
the occasion of his 40th. death anniversary.
Nevertheless, despite the fact that a lot has
been written about “El Flaco de Oro”, a biogra-
phy that measures up to the stature of such a
peculiar character is yet to be written, a com-
poser whose career developed together with
the radio, a new means of communication, in
which he would be a star during the 1940´s,
1950´s and 1960´s, decades when México was
living a golden age, a kind of movie in whose
soundtrack Agustín Lara would become a key
part. And it is not in the bronze sculptures
that exist in Mexico City, Veracruz, La Habana,
Madrid, Granada, Sevilla or Los Angeles that
he still lives, but in his songs; music was not
only the channel through which his talent
flowed, but also the path to inmortality.

A mediados de la década de los no-
venta, el mundo editorial anglosajón
se vio cimbrado por la aparición de
Push, primera novela de la poeta y
performer Sapphire. El golpe no fue
de suerte y se debió a varios factores:
el apoyo incondicional de la máxima
sacerdotisa televisiva (y populachera
crítica de libros) Oprah Winfrey; la te-
mática impactante y la prosa honesta.
Una combinación de oro estandariza-
da, la historia de ghetto que tanto gusta y estremece a las buenas
conciencias suburbanas, pero esta vez en la piel de una jovencita
convertida en bomba de relojería. Push es la historia de superación
de Precious Jones, una chica obesa, negra, víctima constante de
abusos, racismo y vejaciones, embarazada de su segundo hijo (el
padre de ambos es su propio padre), cuyo analfabetismo funcional
no ha sido un impedimento para llevarla hasta octavo grado. El
cenit del libro, su lenguaje, disperso, fragmentado como el HH y
al mismo tiempo vigoroso, se encuentra en una encrucijada al ser
traducido al español, pero se hace lo que se puede: imaginemos
a Iceberg Slim hablando de pollas y gilipollas con beat castellano.

Las Slits solían ser una mezcla de angustia adolescente, guita-
rras chatarreras, elementos rítmicos de Jah y actitud punk. Era
el fin de la década de los setenta y hacer mal las cosas requería
de valor; la vanguardia era otra vez cosa de jóvenes y un grupo
de chicas en medio del furor por el DIY resultaba una bocanada
de aire fresco. Por supuesto que no eran las únicas (existíeron
también las Raincoats de Palmolive y las Kleenex) pero sí las más
aguerridas y cándidas. Los documentos de sus presentaciones
en directo las hacen ver como una catástrofe a punto de ocurrir;
aunque cuente la leyenda que Mick Jones  (The Clash), tenía que
afinarles los instrumentos antes de subir al escenario. Así era la
juventud inglesa que gastaba el dinero del UB40 en tintes y cer-
veza: brillante e inexperta. Casi treinta años después, Ari Up abre
un paréntesis a su ostracismo y regresa con unas Slits que con-
servan pocos de los ingredientes que las encumbraron; aquella
suciedad y furia no podían durar toda la vida y Trapped Animal
es el claro ejemplo de que a los muertos, mejor ni tocarlos.

By the mid nineties, the Anglo-Saxon editorial world was shaken by
the appearance of Push, the first novel by the poet and performer, Sap-
phire. The stroke wasn’t of luck and it was due to several factors: the
unconditional support of the highest television priestess (and populist
book critic), Oprah Winfrey; the shocking themes and the honest prose.
A standardized golden combination, the ghetto story that is so popu-
lar and makes the good suburban consciences shudder, but this time,
in the shoes of a young girl turned into a time bomb. Push is the story
of Precious Jones’ personal growth, an obese black girl, victim of con-
stant abuse, racism and humiliations, pregnant of her second son (the
father of both of them is her own father), whose functional illiteracy
has not been an obstacle to get to eighth grade. The zenith of the book,
its language, dispersed, fragmented like the HH and at the same time
vigorous, finds itself at a crossroads upon being translated to Span-
ish, but you do what you can: let’s imagine Iceberg Slim talking about
cocks with a Spanish beat. Chilling, isn’t it?

anguish, scrap guitars, rhythmic
Jah elements and punk attitude.
It was the end of the 1970s and
doing things the wrong way re-
quired courage; avant-garde was again a young people’s thing and a
group of girls in the middle of the DIY rage turned out to be a breath
of fresh air. Of course they weren’t the only ones (there were also the
Raincoats of Palmolive and the Kleenex), but they were the most hard-
ened and candid. The documents from their live performances make
them seem like a catastrophe about to happen; although legend tells
that Mick Jones (The Clash) had to tune their instruments before they
got on stage. That’s how English youth spent the UB40 money: in dyes
and beer, brilliant and inexperienced. Almost thirty years later, Ari Up
takes a break from her ostracism and returns with the Slits who pre-
serve few of the ingredients that elevated them; that filth and fury
could not last forever and Trapped Animal is a clear example that the

Un policía resulta gravemente herido
durante la catástrofe de Katrina, en Nue-
va Orleans. A pesar de haber sido ascen-
dido a teniente por su comportamiento
heroico, el dolor en la espalda de Terence
McDonagh (Nicholas Cage) sólo puede
ser soportado con cocteles de sustancias,
prohibidas y legales, que poco a poco lo
derriban por un espiral de abusos, co-
rrupción, violencia, juego y prostitución.
Mientras intenta elucidar sus entresijos
morales se le asigna la misión de en-
contrar al asesino de una familia de in-
migrantes africanos: la oportunidad de
redimirse podría ser eso o el último esca-
lón antes de tocar fondo. A diferencia de la versión original dirigida
por Abel Ferrara y que estelariza Harvey Keitel (ojo, que la premisa
es la misma, pero son dos películas completamente distintas) ésta
apunta más al thriller kármico y lisérgico, mientras que la primera
tiene un punto de misticismo y manumisión que la hace aún más
violenta y cruel. Usted elija.

Lo de Mosley va más allá de homenajear el frugal ambiente de la
novela negra, o de componer diálogos engrasadísimos entre los ar-
quetípicos Detectiveduroysilencioso y Rubiasensualymortífera. Tam-
poco vale considerarlo únicamente como el heredero de Chester
Himes, porque entre tanta coincidencia obvia (de género, color e in-
dudable capacidad narrativa) al final tienen tanto que ver como NYC
y LA. El demonio vestido de azul es un fantasma, una fotografía de
una chica blanca a la que Easy Rawlins, un ex muchacho del Tío Sam
durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, está dispuesto a perseguir por
unos cuantos billetes. La búsqueda llevará a Rawlins por un espiral de
decadencia y destrucción, lo hará reencontrarse con el áspero pasado
que había decidido dejar atrás.
Lo que en un principio parece la descripción básica y usual de cual-
quier novela de detectives se torna distinta al entrar en contacto con
la pluma de Mosley: la capacidad de desentrañar las pasiones del ser
humano, las condiciones de la comunidad afroamericana en la pos-
guerra y sobretodo, la ferocidad que cualquier persona puede exhi-
bir para mantenerse a salvo, para esconder lo que nadie puede saber.
Este libro marca el debut de uno de los personajes más recordados
del canon negro: Ezekiel Rawlins; más ambiguo que Marlow, más con-
fundido que Belane.

A policeman results seriously injured during the Katrina catas-
trophe in New Orleans. Despite having been promoted to lieuten-
ant for his heroic behavior, Terence McDonagh’s (Nicholas Cage)
back pain can only be endured with legal and forbidden substance
cocktails that little by little knock him down a spiral of abuse, cor-
ruption, violence, gambling and prostitution. While he tries to elu-
cidate his moral ins and outs, he is assigned the mission of finding
the murderer of an African immigrant family: it could be the op-
portunity of redeeming himself or the last step before he hits rock
bottom. Unlike the original version directed by Abel Ferrara star-
ring Harvey Keitel (don’t be fooled, because although the premise
is the same, they are two completely different movies), this version
is more inclined towards the karmic and lysergic thriller, while the
first has a mysticism and manumission tone that makes it even
more violent and cruel. You choose.

Mosley’s thing goes beyond paying
tribute to the frugal environment of
the black novel or writing well greased
dialogues between the archetypal
tough and silent detective and the
sensual and deadly blonde. Neither is
it worth considering him as Chester
Himes’ heir, because among so much
obvious coincidence (of genre, color
and unquestionable narrative capac-
ity), in the end, they have as much in
common as NYC and LA. Devil in a Blue
Dress is a ghost, a picture of a white girl
whom Easy Rawlins, an ex Uncle Sam
boy during Second World War is willing
to chase after for a few bills. The search will take Rawlins on a spiral
of decadence and destruction, which will make him meet up again
with the rough past he had decided to leave behind.
What at the beginning seemed to be the basic and usual de-
scription of any detective novel turns different when coming into
contact with Mosley’s pen: the ability of unraveling the passions
of human beings, the conditions of the Afro-American community
during the postwar period and above all, the fierceness that any
person can display to keep safe, to hide what nobody can know.
This book marks the début of one of the best remembered char-
acters in the black canon: Ezekiel Rawlins; more ambiguous than
Marlow, more confused than Belane.

pasiones humanas en productos de
superación personal. Ya consiguió
sortear esta dificultad con “Million
Dollar Baby”: logró mostrar una
idea sobre las relaciones persona-
les y sus rupturas sin acudir al sen-
timentalismo obvio. Esta vez ha de-
cidido tocar el tema Mandela y su leitmotiv
de unión y solidaridad va por el camino del
rugby; a partir de la integración racial en un
juego solamente practicado y seguido por
blancos, el presidente sudafricano intenta
unir a todo un pais en quince hombres. Si no
está de humor para descargas moralizantes
sobre el perdón, pase por alto.

other film which exalts and gives false epic
overtones to a situation based on real facts,
it ennobles when Clint takes it in charge. The
sports glory movies tend to be soporific and
ridicule to the point of turning human pas-
sions into self-improvement products. He al-
ready managed to overcome this difficulty
with “Million Dollar Baby”: he managed to
show an idea about personal relationships
and their break-ups without turning to ob-
vious sentimentalism. This time, he has de-
cided to discuss the Mandela subject and his
unity and solidarity leitmotiv goes down the
path of rugby; based on racial integration in
a game which is only practiced and followed
by whites, the South African president tries
to unite a whole country through 15 men. If
you aren’t in the mood for moral discharges
about forgiveness, don’t watch it.

en un periodo de tiempo exclusivo de la his-
toria actual, favorecido por los desarrollos en
las tecnologías y especialmente en los me-
dios de comunicación, si bien este proceso
ha conocido un aceleramiento sin preceden-
te por efecto de la sofisticación de la ciencia,
en realidad, se trata de un camino que la hu-
manidad ha recorrido por diferentes sendas
a lo largo de la historia.

Diferentes ejemplos pueden dar cuenta
de tal dinámica y en el aspecto cultural son
innumerables los casos que forman parte de
nuestro entorno, un ejemplo que puede se-
ñalarse es el jarabe tapatío, el bailable más
representativo de la gala mexicana.
No es raro identificar que el jarabe es un
bailable típico de muchos países de América
Latina por el intercambio cultural que se es-
tablece durante el Virreinato, de ahí que se le
encuentre un parecido especial a la jota ara-
gonesa y al flamenco –propio este último de
los bailables gitanos del sur de España- (en
el que por cierto, se advierten evocaciones
de ciertos bailes de la India).
Se considera que el origen de la palabra
“jarabe” debe buscarse en el árabe, idioma

choacán el “jarabe moreliano” y el “mixteco”
en la región que se localiza entre los estados
de Oaxaca, Guerrero y Puebla. Cuando se
hace referencia al jarabe tapatío, se habla
del que es bailado en la región de Guada-
lajara, en Jalisco y es como se ha dicho, el

Several examples may show such dynamics
and regarding the cultural aspect, there are
countless cases which are part of our environ-
ment, an example that could be pointed out
is the Jarabe Tapatío, the most representative
dance in Mexican gala.
It isn’t strange to identify that the jarabe
is a typical dance in many countries of Latin
America due to the cultural exchange es-
tablished during the Viceroyalty period, ex-
plaining why there is a similarity to the jota
aragonesa and the flamenco –this last one,
typical of the gyspy dances from southern
Spain- in which, by the way, there is an influ-
ence from certain dances from India.
It is considered that the origin of the word
“jarabe” should be looked for in the Arab lan-
guage, in which xarab means drink, indirectly

como antecedente al Jarabe Gatuno, creado
en España a mediados del siglo XV y traído a
la Nueva España por los peninsulares, dicha
exposición fue siempre un baile popular y
nunca entró a los salones, pues era conside-
rado como una danza corriente y licenciosa
propia de las fiestas públicas cuyas picantes
tonadas se burlaban abiertamente de los
bailables de las clases altas, lo que dio como
consecuencia que dicha celebración fuera
condenada por el virrey Félix Berenguer de
Marquina, el 15 de diciembre de 1802, que en
un bando condenaba a: “…un baile nombra-
do Jarabe Gatuno, que por sus deshonestos
movimientos, acciones y canto, causaba ru-
bor aún a las personas de menos delicada
conciencia”; con el tiempo, sus características
libertinas fueron difuminadas hasta conver-
tirse en un baile folklórico, que mantuvo fir-
memente arraigada su aceptación popular.
Es posible acotar aquí sin embargo, que el
jarabe ejerció una especial atracción en dos
extranjeros muy influyentes en la alta socie-
dad de su respectivo contexto: el tristemente
célebre emperador Maximiliano I (que arriba
a México en 1864 y fue fusilado en 1867); así

El Jarabe Tapatío fue compuesto por Jesús
González Rubio y fue por primera vez baila-
do en 1790 en el Teatro Coliseo de la Ciudad
de México, si damos una mirada atenta a
las distintas referencias, podemos imagi-
nar un alegre espectáculo amenizado por
orquesta integrada de arpa, clarinete, tam-
borcillo, guitarrón, violín y piano; repertorio
de diferentes sones interpretados por dos
voces acopladas, una de ellas entonando el
artificioso falsete. Con el tiempo, la escena
se convierte en una tertulia con una o va-
rias parejas bailando separadas y sincopa-
das al compás de la música del Mariachi.
El hombre vestido con el traje de Charro y
la mujer con el de la China Poblana. El brío
de los ejecutantes se contagia al auditorio,
conmovidos como si se tratara de un himno
popular, aquellos zapateando sobre tarimas
de gruesa madera y estos desde sus asientos
bailando sólo los pies no por eso con menos
entusiasmo. La velada puede empezar con el

dance named Jarabe Gatuno, which because
of its dishonest movements, acts and singing,
caused even the people with the less delicate
conscience to blush”; with time, its libertine
features were softened until it turned into a
folklore dance which maintained its popular
acceptance firmly established. It is possible to
annotate here, nevertheless, that the jarabe
exerted special attraction for two foreign-
ers with great influence on the high society
of their respective context: the sadly famous
emperor Maximilian I (who arrived in México
in 1864 and was executed in 1867), as well as
famous Russian dancer Anna Pavlova, one of
the great ladies of ballet, who arrived in Méx-
ico in 1919. Prima ballerina in love with cul-
ture, ethnic dances and sumptuous regional
costumes, she included the Jarabe Tapatío
dressed as a China Poblana as part of her per-
manent repertoire.
The Jarabe Tapatío was composed by Jesús
González Rubio and was danced for the first
time in 1790 at the Teatro Coliseo in México
City: if we take a good look at the dif-
ferent references, we can imagine
a happy show, livened up by the
orchestra made up of harp,
clarinet, small drum, guitarrón,
violin and piano; different
son repertoire, interpreted
by two joined voices, one
of them singing the im-
plausible falsetto. With the
passing of time, the scene
turned into a gathering of
one or two couples danc-
ing separated and syn-
copated in time to the
Mariachi music. The
man dressed in the
Charro attire and
the woman as a

The performers’
vigor is transmit-
ted to the audience, moved as
if it was a popular hymn, the
first stomping their feet on the
hardwood floor and the latter,
dancing from their seats with
no lesser enthusiasm. The eve-
ning may begin with the Son de la
Negra; then, El Atotonilco, El Perico
Loro, La Malhora, La Güitlacocha, Las
Alazanas, El Sihualteco, Las Copetonas,
Las Abejas, El Sinaloense, El gavilancillo, El
Carretero, La Vaquilla, the list is really plen-
tiful, but it never saturates its audience.
Just like with other dances, the move-
ments try to imitate an animal´s behav-
ior -originally, only the one who played the

pietario, sino por el trasfondo simbólico que
dicha pieza adquiere durante el baile, por
ejemplo en el Son de el Palomo, el hombre
hace la rueda a la mujer, como el palomo a
la hembra, arrojando finalmente a los pies
de la bailadora el sombrero; en el Son de el
Guajolote, la conquista amorosa se declara
cuando el hombre pasa su pierna sobre la
cabeza de la mujer y ella acepta bailar en el
ala del sombrero.
El Jarabe tapatío ha sido la temática cen-
tral lo mismo de las películas de la llamada
época de oro del cine mexicano, así
como en las imágenes de la lotería,
o en los cromos de los calen-
darios; la mercadotec-
nia no ha sido ajena a
la influencia que tiene
esta imagen en el ima-
ginario del México

calendar images; marketing has not been
beyond the influence this image has in con-
temporary México’s imagination, so that
the Corona Brewing Company -through the
Quittani production company- on a recent
advertising campaign filmed a commercial
during two days in the Red Square and other
nearby streets and squares; for this purpose,
a 400,000 dollar deal was made; 400 Rus-
sian Army soldiers were hired and 20 of them
were taught to dance the Jarabe Tapatío at
a military station. It’s just one more of the
peculiarities of globalization with a clearly
Mexican taste.

El Decatlón Solar es una competencia en la que participan 20
equipos de estudiantes de Ingeniería, Arquitectura, Diseño y Comu-
nicación provenientes de universidades de todo el mundo, con el ob-
jetivo de construir una vivienda que además de cómoda y moderna,
sea sostenible al ser alimentada gracias a la energía solar.
En Junio del 2010, el decatlón tendrá lugar por primera vez fuera de
los Estados Unidos, para permitir que la ciudad anfitriona –Madrid-,
muestre al mundo sus avances y compromisos con la eficiencia ener-
gética y las ventajas de la energía renovable.
Al terminar el diseño y construcción de las viviendas, éstas son
abiertas al público con el fin de que los visitantes conozcan las in-
novadoras soluciones al gran reto que hoy enfrentamos: la creciente
necesidad de energía de poco o nulo impacto. El Primer lugar en la
versión 2009 celebrada en Washington, DC, fue para el equipo ale-
mán.

The Solar Decathlon is a contest in which 20 Engineering, Archi-
tecture, Design and Communication student teams from universities
from all around the world participate with the purpose of building
a house which, in addition to being modern and comfortable, is also
self-sustainable by being fed through solar energy.
On June 2010, the decathlon will take place for the very first time
outside the United States, to allow the host city –Madrid- to show the
world its advances and its commitment to energy efficiency and the
advantages of renewable energy.
After the design and construction of the houses is finished, they are
opened to the public so that visitors get acquainted with the innova-
tive solutions to the great challenge we are facing today: the growing
need of little or no impact energy. The first place of the 2009 version
that took place in Washington, D.C., went to the German team.

Desde el 2009 comenzaron a circular dentro

del Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México,
una flotilla que llegará a 100 ciclotaxis –ve-
hículos impulsados por energía eléctrica
mediante un sistema híbrido- que pretende
promover el transporte ecológico y reducir el
tráfico en la zona. Liviano para el conductor
y cómodo para el usuario, el ciclotaxi puede
viajar entre 25 y 45 km/h, girar 360° y además
de pedales tiene un motor con 4 baterías de
12 volts.
Por fortuna, en una megápolis tan com-
plicada, la disposición de las autoridades
parece favorecer las opciones que eviten la liberación de gases con-
taminantes, y como medida adicional se han instalado soportes para
aparcar bicicletas en el área, y en Febrero del 2010 dio inicio el Pro-
grama Ecobici, para realizar trayectos cortos en varias colonias de la
ciudad, y el cual permite mediante un pago anual de 300 pesos, el
uso ilimitado de bicicletas.
Ahora si, parece que nuestra ciudad comenzará a estar, -al menos
en lo que respecta al cuidado del medio ambiente- a la altura de las
principales capitales del mundo y esperemos que la iniciativa se in-
corpore a otras zonas con gran afluencia de visitantes peatonales.

ment of 300 pesos to make short journeys through several of the city’s
neighborhoods.
So now it seems that our city will begin to be –at least as far as en-
vironmental care is concerned- on the same level as the main capitals
of the world, and let’s hope that this initiative is introduced in other
areas with great pedestrian inflow.

You can reach a speed of 120 km/h and au-
tonomy of 105 km thanks to its 12 kWh, ion-
lithium batteries, which can be recharged in
any home’s garage. The luxuries in the design:
a joystick that substitutes the steering wheel and pedals, a Swatch
clock on the board and the lid of the power point’s connector made of
Swarovski crystal.
Although for now it is just a prototype, it is expected that soon, it
will become a model of mass production.
