CHAPTER 1: PERSONALITY

Question 1: How do you like your personality?


- Postive person: attentive, considerate, courageous, friendly, generous,
optimistic, organized, responsible, sincere, understanding
- Negative personality: aggressive, arrogant, bossy, cowardly, dishonest,
irresponsible, pessimistic.
Question 2: How have your parents influenced you in term of personality?
- mainly determined by how parents treat their children, have a great impact
on, form ones personality, feel loved/secure and valued/frightened.
Question 3: Do you contact people whose personality is totally different from
yours?
- DIfferent personality, respect the difference, have something in common,
have personalities opposite from mine.
Questions 4: What are the main factors that contribute to shaping ones
personality?
- happy/unhappy childhood, home environment, teachers and friends, general
physical and mental health, timely corrective measures taken by parents and
teachers.
Question 5: When you hire someone for a job, will you care to look at his
personality?
- Specific insight into an individuals personality, employees strengths/
potential/motivation, understanding the job requirements, fit/suitable for the
job/the team/the organization, cooperate with colleagues.
CHAPTER 2: FAMILY
Question 1: What are the disadvantages of living in an extended family?

no privacy, a lot of conflicts, the older generation doesnt agree with the
younger generation, too much noise
Question 2: What do you think is the best way to keep with friends and
family when youre away from home? Why?
phone calls, using the internet, e-mails and instant messenger services,
social media networks like facebook, Twitter, ect.
Question 3: Is family an old-fashioned idea?
a place to return to, the place where one can find joy and happiness, feel
safe and warm, a parent is a childs first teacher.
Question 4: Has womens role in family changed greatly?
traditional concept of women as homemakers, traditional roles: men
retain as family decision makers, women do housework and take care of the
children, status of women has changed, men no longer the sole
breadwinners, both husbands and wives jointly share family financial
burden.
Question 5: What responsibilities do children have toward their
parents?
Obey parents, respect or honor them, love them, follow their instructions,
take care of them, provide them in sickness and old age, do not speak evil of
them.

CHAPTER 3: Hometown/ Neighborhood/ Accommodation


Q1: What kind of neighbors do you wish to have?
respectful, concerned about otherscomfort, respect others, not disturb others
with loud noise.
Q3: When you buy a house, what is the most important thing to consider?

location, size, price, convenience, surrounding area, neighbourhood.


Q4: In the future, what kind of accommodation would you like to live in?
an apartment in a high-rise building, a house in the city centre/ suburbs, near
city centre/ close to city facilities.
Q5: What are the advantages and disadvantages of living with friends?
advantages: share bills and the rent, share responsibility for chores, enrich
social life.
Disadvantages: non-stop parties, his/her friends stay overnight, tension may
occur when they go clubbing a lot, put up with their bad habits.
CHAPTER 4: Travel/ Vacation/ Tourism
Q1: What dangers can you perceive when you travel?
robbery, street crimes, traffic accidents, insect and mosquito bites, diseases
(malaria)
Q2: Do you think travel broadens the mind?
useful information, opportunities for adventure and discovery, enrich our lives:
see different social norms and different parts of the world, refreshing and
revitalizing.
Q3: What are the benefits and negative effects of tourism?
Positive effects: creates jobs, infrastructure, encourages the preservation of
traditional custorms/ handicrafts/ festivals, helps promote conservation of wildlife
and natural resources
Negative effects: pollution through traffic emissions/ littering, noise
Q4: Do you prefer to travel alone or with friends? What are some advantages
of it?
Travelling with friends:opportunities to share the moment/ happiness/ travel costs
like accommodation and food, food and transportation are a lot cheaper, help each
other out in tough situations.
Travelling alone: complete freedom, have more flexibility, plenty of time for quiet
thinking and self-reflection, easier to meet new people and make friends with the
locals.
Q5: What do you need to do before you go abroad on holiday?

passport and visa, do some research, familiarize ourselves with local conditions
and laws, enough cash to cover emergencies and any unexpected delays, prepare
some medicine/ camera and guidebooks/maps.
CHAPTER 5: PLACES
Q1: What makes a place attractive: people, food, weather, or scenery?
a wide range of activities, local/native culture, friendly/helpful, tasty food, nice
weather, beautiful scenery (mountainous cities, rice fields, long coasts)
Q2: What is your feeling when you see old architecture and historical
buildings disappearing rapidly?
sad, historical heritage, losing a piece of history
Q4: What sort of places will be of interest to people in the future?
beauty of nature, countryside, close to nature, full of fresh air.
Q5: What do you think could be done to make museums more enjoyable?
changing the interior, appropriate colour of the walls, arrangement of exhibits.
CHAPTER 6: TRANSPORT
Q1: Tell me about the advantages and disadvantages of public transportation.
Advantages: good for the environment, low cost/ much cheaper than private
transportation, better accessibility, not to worry about parking, more comfortable
(relax, read something while riding)
Disadvantages: walk some distance to our home or office, no privacy, crowded,
noisy, no personal space.
Q2: Do you think getting to work is easier or more difficult than it used to be?
easier, more public transportation, not transfer much, more bus lines.
Q4: Do you think cars are safer than they used to be?
safety features, air bags, rear camera

laws and regulations to protect citizenslives, enforce the traffic laws, reduce
traffic accidents.

their cultural past?
recommend children to read books, take them to cultural and historical places,
tell them traditional stories.

CHAPTER 8: COMMUNICATION
Q1: What is the most remarkable advantages of mobile phones?
contact friends and family anywhere and any time, not miss important calls, use
for emergencies or in need of help, take photos to capture memories, connect to the
internet and check emails.
Q2: How did people contact each other before the telephone was invented?
letters, telgrams, urgent messages, invention of telephones
Q3: What inconvenience may the use of moblile phones cause?
busy with cell phones even when important events are going on, limit face-toface time with friends and family
Q5: What difficulties may arise when people communicate without being able
to see each other, by telephone or e-mail for example?

Q1: How do old people enjoy their lives these days?
the elderly, look after grandchildren, exercise outdoors with friends, take a walk

good listeners, share joys and sorrows, for socializing, friends make our life
interesting and wonderful, receive support and help, supportive, share burden/
ideas/ experience in life

celebrities, set a good example, have a positive influence on

Advantages: usually very rich, use fame to make money, live in beautiful
houses, not have to worry about paying bills, can afford the best clothes and drive
the latest models of fast cars, spend their holidays in expensive resorts, be invited
to the best parties and meet other celebrities.
Disadvantages: have no privacy, being recognized by everyone in the street, worry
about own safety.
Q5: How do you make guests feel welcome?
be prepared before guests arrive, provide necessary things, make them feel at
home, treat them with respect, enjoy the time while they are here, not take things
so serious, be polite, calm and balanced in talks, not make any fuss, dress up nicely
and comfortably, prepare some good dishes, give some useful and nice gifts, keep
smiling
CHAPTER 10: ENVIRONMENT
Q1: Are there any ways that you personally can contribute to improving the
environment?
environmental activist, save energy, improve the environment, plant trees in
neighborhood, use a bicycle or commute to work rather than a car/ motorcycle,
save water, use renewable energy at home and at work
Q2: What are some reasons that rainforests are being destroyed?

Q3: What do you think the consequenes of global warming will be?
global warming affects:
- Weather: warmer temperatures could increase the probability of drought.
lead to heavier rainfall in some areas.
- Health: Global warming could increase smog pollution in some areas.
- Ecosystem: disrupt ecosystens, pushing species that cannot adapt to
extinction.
- Sea level rising: Rising global temperatures will speed the melting of
flaciers and ice caps.
Q4: What are the advantages and disadvantages of having nuclear power
stations?
Advantages:
- Not require expensive fuel (a large amount of energy is generated from a
very small amount of fuel)
- Not produce hazardous gases (Nuclear power does not produce carbon
dioxide or sulfur dioxide)
- Not be a threat to ecosystem (Nuclear power stations do not contribute to
global warming or acid rain)
Disadvantages:
- Disposing the waste (poisonous waste is produced, highly radioactive;
careless disposal of waste => pollution of land, rivers and the ocean)
- Very expensive to build power stations
Q5: What can we do to stop people from wasting useful sources such as water,
electricity, or gas?

CHAPTER 11: ANIMAL/ PETS
Q1: Would you describe your country as an animal-loving country?
not really, criticized for eating dog meat, lots of poachers kill wild or
engangered animals.
Q2: Can you name a few endangered wild animals in your country?
tigers, elephants, whales, disappear rapidly

What exactly is Animal Right?
Animals should not be exploited by people and they should have the same rights as
humans.
Vietnam currently lacks effective laws punishing wildlife crimes:
Just as we oppose the explotation of hamans, I oppose the exploitation of other
animals.
Q4: What do you think are the benefits of keeping animals in a zoo?
Protect endangered species
Receive firsthand knowledge of how animals behave and act
Help animal populations (After raising sufficient number of the populations, the
animaks can then be released into the wild in an attempt to encourage population
growth)
Q5: Do you think pets play in important role in a family? Why or Why not?

loyal and affectionate.
CHAPTER 12: FOOD
Q1: How do people in Vietnam like western-style food?
young generation, open-minded, foreign restaurants, love trying new things

controversial issue, harsh criticism, eating dog meat seriously hurts the image
of a country, dogs are special because theyre pets and companion animals/ the
best friend of humankind, inhumane.
Q3: Do you think more about nutrition than taste when you buy food?
nutrition is the most important influence/ a top consideration on food choices,
health of family, healthy diet => happy life.
Q4: Do you thimk traditional foods will retain popularity in your country?
- traditional foods, in their original form, not modernized, not processed, not
packaged, simple, basic, nutritious, consume more
CHAPTER 13: INTEREST/ HOBBY/ FREE TIME

Q1: Is watching television a good way of relaxing?


excessive TV watching => unhealthy for body and mind, a waste of time
Q2: Are you an outdoor person?
outdoor activities: outdoor swimming, fishing, camping, motor biking,
mountain climbing, etc.
Outdoor person: challenges for personal development, living to the fullest.
Q3: Is it important to have an interest or a hobby? Why?
engage in activities that we enjoy, boost mental health and overall well-being,
exercise our mind
Q4: Why is it a good idea for a child to have a hobby?
help build self-esteem, learn to set goals, make decisions, solve all sorts of
problems, develop passion for a future career.
Q5: How has the way people spent their free time changed over the years?
in the past, not many forms of entertainment, visit friends/relatives, now:
shopping, playing sports, watching television, playing video/computer games.
CHAPTER 14: SPORTS/ HEALTH
Q1: what sports are most popular in your country? Why?
footbal, the King sport, badminton, table tennis, volleyball, swimming, martial
arts like judo, karate.
Q2: Do you think people in your country exercise enough?
not exercise enough, especially city dwllers, go by motorcycle, no time, work
early till late at ningt, no other physical activities.
Q3: What are the best way to keep healthy?
keep fit, a healthy diet, to exercise, the right amount of nutrients => improve
dramatically
Q4: Why do people live longer now?
a number of factors, improvements in public health, nutrition, and medicine,
vaccinations and antibiotics reduce deaths in childhood.

Q5: Do you think healthcare facilities in your country, such as hospitals, need
to be improved?
inadequate healthcare facilities, public hospital overload, expensive medicine
CHAPTER 15: TV/ MOVIES
Q1: Do you think there is too much violence in films? Do you think such
portrayals are harmful to anyone?
violent movies, viewers may behave more aggressively, more prone to hold
attitudes that favour violence and aggression, harmful to youngsters.
Q2: Do you think there should be a limit on the time that children spend
watching television? Why, or Why not?
excessive TV watching, compromise early childhood development, hinder
learning, adversely affect health, stimulate aggressive behavior overweight, reduce
physical activity.
Q3: What is your opinion on unauthorised sale of CDs or DVDs?
sals of unauthorized/pirated CDs/DVDs from any source, buy at conventional
retail stores or from reputable websites.
Q4: How has television in your country changed in recent years?
in the past, restricted, censored, since 2003, all channels, made available via
satellite, cable TV, many translated programmes from Reuters, ESPN, Discovery
channel, BBC plus about 40 original channels, pay for these programmes.
