Exercise 6 Part 2 - Analysis

February 20, 2014

1. How does the TV news differ from the print news story in terms of format and
writing style?

- In terms of format, there is a huge difference between the two. Basically, the
print form of news stories are written the usual way, with sentences and/or
paragraphs written from left to write, in an undivided column (one column only).
Also, in print news stories, everything written shall be read by the readers. Unlike in
TV news stories, which contains instructions which are written in all capital letters to
catch the attention of the one who will voice over not to read that particular
sentence, for it is simply for directions to be followed. Also, a TV news is written in a
two-column format: the audio and the visual, can sometimes even be a threecolumn script, wherein the name of the news anchor, and the correspondent for
example, is indicated.

- In terms of writing style, the TV news shall be conversational (written like
you are talking) with the use of everyday (familiar/easily understandable) language.
It shall also be always in the active voice, in which case the source is mentioned first
before what he said unlike in print news stories wherein the source comes after his
direct quotation. As with the comparison of the story structures of the two (TV, and
print), the TV news story does also start with the most important details but is more
limited.
2. How do the visuals support the text in the TV news story?

- The major aid that the visuals give is that; the visuals lessen the need for the
use of imagery in writing, since the intended audience can immediately see what the
situation is like simply by flashing photos or inserting videos in the report. In
addition, visuals capture the attention of the audience effectively since people by
nature, believers of what they see, and are hooked more especially if the photos/
videos are truly appealing.
3. What elements in the print news story were taken out/added in the TV news
story? If you were the TV news scriptwriter, what would you have changed in the
way the story was written?

- We could not actually say it has totally been taken out or added, just that
there are elements which have been given more consideration and others given less.
The ones given more, I would say, would be the human interest element of the
news because as once said in class, broadcast media like the radio, and TV appeal to
the dramatic side of the issue. For example, the print news story may usually focus
on the cause of a problem. But in TV news, the story will highlight more of the
effect/s or its impact to the people concerned because that appeals to the emotions
more. Meanwhile, the proximity element of news is given less consideration which I
believe is self-explanatory.
