Shop Cabinets
Customize these cabinets wich any combination of drawers

and doors to fit the needs of your shop. You can even build
several cabinets and join chenl together with a bench LOp.

e'v~ been "making do with a couple of old

)L'TII.lALS. To keep the cost down. I used ~<"
pine to
storage cabinets in the lVood.<nulh shop for make the frames and V,,".rnick Masonite for U1C panels
several years. Finally. I decided it was time to do and the drawer bottoms. The door frames and drawers
something about iL
The new cabinets hnd to meet three requirements:

are also made frornpine. And the drawers slide onwood

runners (you call use metal drawer slides ifyou prefer).

first, they had to be simple to build and easy to assemble.

Second. they should be relatively inexpensive. And
third. it should be easy to ,,"stomize the cabinets to fit
different needs. (You
build as many as you need. and
use different drawers and doorconfigurations.)
JOINERY.The basic cabinet i$ buill using a frame and
panel technique. A wood fmme is joined together and
holds a plywood or Masonite panel. The frames are
ioined with a stub tenon and groove - a simple joint to
make. and ODe that's ea.-y to set up for making multiple
joints. (For more information. see pages 12to 15.)

Even the pullsare made from pieces olscrap wood.

FTU.R STRIPS. The trickiest part about de~iJlTling
these cabinets was coming up with a simple way to vary
the placement of the drawers and doors. f ~"3J1le
up with
atechnique that uses grooves along the front stiles. The
drawer rails are set in these j!rooves. Then the grooves
are filled above and below the rails with filler strips.
TOP. After completing the cabinets. I built a plywood
and Masonite top. (For other options. see page 24.)
~'N'sn.Finally. Iapplied a couple coats of lung oil
fil\ish to the completed cabinets and top.
