Iron Age
Its Discovery
Iron Age started when the best tools were found to become more versatile when added
by carbon which started an era of steel. [5] Alloys with less carbon than this, such as wrought
iron, cannot be heat treated to a significant degree and will consequently be of low hardness,
while higher carbon content creates an extremely hard but brittle material that cannot be
annealed, tempered, or otherwise softened.
Unlike bronze which is poured, iron is molded by repeatedly heating and hammering
against an anvil, a process known as smithing. It is also much harder than bronze and keeps a
cutting edge for longer.[6]

The model gold boat with its mast, rowing benches, oars, and other fittings was an appropriate offering to
the sea god Manannn mac Lir who was associated with Lough Foyle where the hoard was recovered. [8]
