of online social networking. Almost all people use it in order to gain new friends or
popularity, Facebook, for example have a more than a million users. This popularity of
social networking sites is constantly growing. Even some educators uses discussion
opportunities provided by social networking sites because they know students will listen
more if they use this as an example but it also had a negative effects to students like being
addicted to it. This study will represents its positive, negative and neutral effects on
student's studies.

Background of the Study

Since the introduction of social network sites years ago, to communicate with friends
and family has been easy once you have access to internet. The internet has given us the
ability to connect with people from around the globe with a few clicks of a button. And you
can easily send information to a friend or get information. Social network sites such as
MySpace, Facebook , Youtube , Skype have attracted millions of users, many of whom
have integrated these sites into their daily practices. People consume a lot of time on this
sites uploading or downloading, getting information concerning their career or academic
work. People are always online every second, chatting with friends, watching online movies,
doing research. Social site has become an habit for some people, they find it difficult to
study for one hour without login to one network site. Some people have become very smart
because of the information they get from this sites, why some have become very poor
academically, because it easy to get almost any materials for school assignment.

general objective. Social Networking Sites have been viral in the world . This has become
teenager's way of killing boredom and addiction. Our school systems has becoming worse
because of students or teenagers losing focus in their studies , Tardiness is one example. The
researchers concluded that students are always want to be in , SNS could be the culprit.
Hence this study was made.

students. It includes what kind of sites they are visiting. This study also includes the
advantages and disadvantages of SNS in the academic performances of a student. However
the study does not cover their financial status like if they use money on sites. It will not also
include on how teenagers or students used Social Networking Sites.

Significance of the Study

SNS (Social Networking Sites) are one of the factors why student gets interrupted on
their studies. As a matter of fact, SNS has a dual face that can bring to the students. It has
advantages and disadvantages for its user.
Nowadays, parents patronize their children in terms of different aspects, Particularly
on their studies. Because of this, this study aims to help the parents aware of what SNS
could give to their children. This study would give parents knowledge on the probable
academic failure of their children as a result of constant interaction with it. Moreover, this
study targets to benefit on other people who wants to know more about this topic.

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

Our research study The effects of social networking site to the academic
performance of students tried to answer the question What will happen to the academic
performance of student with their habitual interaction to SNS? The research study of
Nayzabekov (2012) claimed that SNS will affect it in a bad way, with the statement, The
idea of multitasking which could perform different years of action while visiting SNS would
affect the concentration of students, because for example a student has a lot of assignments
and works on different subjects instead of doing it on time and early, he/she visits first the
SNS. According to this statement, SNS will affect the concentration of a student that we
presume would lead to the bending of focus of student from studying to usage of SNS. This
is supported by the statement of Ellis and Knaus which sees it as, a failure to initiate or
complete a task or activity by determined time. In other words, he sees SNS -related
activities as non academic activities that will result in postponing the completion of
academic task. However, the study of Elizabeth Power (2012) stated that SNS has a good
effect, with the statement, the potential for using SNS to further the goal of education is
immerse, and teachers are making the faraway into the world of online social networking
site for educational purposes. As the statement said, there is a lot of potential in furthering
the education using SNS since teachers would be able to support the students even if the
school period ends. Power (2012) sees SNS as a coin that have two sides, meaning that
there are dual effects of SNS. The researchers decided to use this theory together with the
integration of Power and Ellis and Knaus as the framework of the study.

some people, computers are considered vital on a daily basis. This had cause to many
people become computer addicts to this great service. Now, we see almost in every social
places providing Wi-Fi service. Also, with all the great technology now days we no longer

its important purpose to people is to keep in touch with their family, friends, and old
friends that one may have lost touch with. Addiction to these internet websites became a
problem once it starts to affect their daily life. According to Pamaoukaghion (2055-2010)
Social Network Addiction was first known as a psychological disorder around the world,
also internet addiction lead to social network addiction. According to Young (2009) Social
Networking can be compare as the same as being addicted to drugs or alcohol. Internet
addiction is big cause of social network addiction because people started to explore the

internet and by that started visiting social network websites and by that people when to
internet addiction to social network addiction. Social networks addiction can also lead to
many problems such as problems with family, work, and friends.

social network website. There are many levels of social network addiction, some of the
levels are for emotional low self-confidence, and scared to be exposed personally
Pamaoukaghion (2005-2010) (paragraps#4-5). People with low self-esteem are most likely
to fall into social network addiction because of the unstable social expose with people in
person. According to Pamaoukaghion (2055-2010) in a study from the University of Athens,
psychiatrists discuss about a woman who lost her job because of being online on a social
network websites. The discussion was about this situation of the women that it could be a
sign of social network addiction.

Local Literature

Social networking sites let individuals to present themselves, and begin or keep
connections with others. The extremely popular social network site for students indifferent
levels, Facebook, has already printed a big impact on their lives. The site can beused
towards work-related contexts, romantic relationship commencement andconnecting those
with shared interests. Members may use the site to mingle with peoplethey already know
offline or to find new friends. Facebook permits its users to presentthemselves in an
Internet profile, build up "friends" who can post comments on eachother's walls, and view
each other's page.Facebook associates can also join groups based on common interests, see
whatthings they have in common, and learn each others' hobbies, interests, favorite music,
andromantic relationship status through their pages. But what are behind these facts? What
does Facebook bring to the lives of themembers especially to the students? How does
Facebook affect the life of a student?According to studies, Facebook has an impact to
students. Some students areusing it for educational purposes. Students would like to do
some online collaborationwith classmates. It is said that Usfng Facebook boosts students
self-esteem even more.
They would feel belongingness in the community compared to those who do not
haveaccounts. It also provides news on what are happening in the real world and even in
their school campuses. On the other hand, negative effects flourish. It was found that
socialnetworking sites has formed a new kind of addiction which we called the "social
mediaaddiction" and it is quite true in using Facebook. Are you addicted to Facebook?
Somewould say "yes" and some would say "no". It depends on the level of cravings. But in
therecent study, it was found that a lot of students are by now addicted to it, to the

extentthat their school performance is affected."Children who spend much of their time
online find it harder to focus in class andhave short attention span " researchers found
through the samples that 7 out of 10teachers believed that their students are becoming
obsessed with social media sites suchas Facebook. Their students tend to study while using
Facebook and it shows that theygot 20% lower grades. Facebook-using students even
perform task (projects or assignments) without completion for the reason that they spend
more time scrolling downon their newsfeed to see updates about their friends and look up
for their notificationsrather than finishing their school tasks. Aside that Facebook affects
students academic performance; it also has an effect on students emotional health. Yes,
students feelconnected to others but study shows that they manifest depression through
seeing their status updates. Some would utilize the site to express what they feel towards
their enemyin school or even outside the campus. They would blurt out through posting
status thatwould target their opponent just to hurt their feelings. With the rampant use of
all the social networking sites, students are coming looseto the real associates. Facebook
chats and posts would make them busy nowadays.
They may be connected to many people but they somehow disconnect with the
importantaspects of their lives and one of those is education. The belief of meeting people
face toface seems very odd. Students prefer to send and receive instant messages or
postmessages through Facebook. Many other elements could be the reason for the
inattention in studies of students. But somehow social networks like Facebook have a
negative impact on the education of some students. Facebook could make students vain for
better or for worse and it is the parents' obligation to watch and guide their children to get
the utmost good benefits fromFacebook.
