A posttensioned beam has a midspan cross section with a duct of 50 mm by 75 mm to house the
wires, as shown in fig, Its prestressed with 520 mm2 of steel to an initial stress of 1035 Mpa.
Immediately after transfer the stress is reduced by 5% owing to anchorage loss and elastic
shortening of concrete. Compute the stresses in the concrete at transfer.

Question: (Ex- 5.4)

A posttensioned bonded concrete beam in fig, has a prestress of 1575 KN in the steel
immediately after prestressing, which eventually reduces to 1350 KN due to losses. The beam
carries two live loads of 45 KN each in addition to its own weight of 4.5 KN/m.
Compute the extreme fiber stress in midspan
(a) Under the initial condition with full prestressand no live load
(b) Under the final condition, after the losses have taken lace, and with full live load

A posttensioned simple beam on a span of 12 m is shown in fig, It carries a superimposed load


of 11 KN/m in addition t its own weight of 4.5 KN/m. The initial prestress in the steel is 950
MPa, reducing to 820 Mpa after deducting all losses and assuming no bending of the beam. The
parabolic cable has an area of 1600 mm2, n=6,
Compute the stress in the steel at midspan, assuming
(1) The steel is bonded by grouting
(2) The steel is unbonded and entirely free to slip

An I-shaped beam is prestressed eith Aps = 1750 mm2 as prestressing ateel with an effective
stress, fse, of 1100 MPa. The c.g.s. of the strands which supply the prestress is 115 mm above
the bottom of the beam as shown in fig, along with the shape of the concrete cross section.
Material properties are: fpu = 1860 MPa, fc = 48 MPa.
Find the ultimate resisting moment of the section for design following the ACI code.

The midspan section of composite beam is shown in fig, The precast stem 300 mm by 920 mm
deep is posttensioned with an initial force of 2450 KN, The effective prestress after losses is
taken as 2150 KN. Moment due to weight of that precast section is 270 KN-m at midspan. After
it is erected in place, the top slab of 150 mm by 920 mm wide is to be cast in place producing a
moment of 135 KN-m, After the slab concrete has hardened, the composite section is to carry a
maximum live load moment of 750 KN-m.
Compute stresses in the section at various stages, Aps = 2400 mm2, fpu= 1650 MPa, fc= 34 MPa
Estimate the ultimate moment.

Question: (Ex- 6.1)

Make a preliminary design for section of a prestressed-concrete beam to resist a total moment
of 435 KN-m. The overall depth of the section is given as 920 mm. The effective prestress for
steel is 860 MPa, ad allowable stress for concrete under working load is -11 MPa

Make a preliminary design for the beam section in ex-6.1 with MT = 435 KN-m, MG= 55 KN-m,
h= 920 mm , fse = 860 MPa, and fc = -11 MPa

For the preliminary section obtained in example 6.2, make a final design, allowing
fb= -12.5 MPa, f0 =1035 MPa. Other given values were: MT = 435 KN-m, MG= 55 KN-m,

Make final design for the preliminary section obtained in ex-6.1, , MG= 285 KN-m, allowing
fb= -12.5 MPa, f0 =1035 MPa. Other values are given were : MT = 435 KN-m, fse = 860 MPa,
and ft = -11 MPa; h= 920 mm. The preliminary section is shown in fig, with Ac= 129 *103 mm2,
Ct= 345 mm, Cb= 575 mm, I= 10.87*109 mm4, Kt = 148 mm, kb=246mm, F= 727 KN,
Fo= 727(1035/860)= 875 KN

Redesign the beam section in ex-6.3, allowing and considering tension in concrete. Ft=2.1 MPa
fb= 1.65 MPa. Other given values were: MT = 435 KN-m, MG= 55 KN-m, ft = -11 MPa;
F=804 KN, fb= -12.5 MPa, f0 =968 KN

Question: (Ex- 7.3)

Check shear strength for the beam shown in fig, at station 1-1 which is h/2 from support. Given
that this section is adequate for wu=70 KN/m on the basis of its flexural strength computed in
ex- 5.8. fc =49 MPa

Question: (Ex- 7.4)

Check the shear strength for station 2-2 for the beam shown in fig, The I-shaped noncomposite
section spans 15 m, and the c.g.s is as 113 mm from the bottom fiber at station 2-2, Other
information is given in fig, for this beam: Fe= 1989 KN, e= 337 mm, d= 787 mm, fc= 49 MPa,
wd= 5.65 KN/m (beam wt.)

Question: (Ex- 8.1)

A concrete beam of 10m simple span, fig, is posttensioned with 780 mm2 of high tensile steel to
an initial prestress of 965 MPa immediately after prestressing.
Compute the initial deflection at midspan due to prestress and the beams own weight, assuming
Ec= 28*103 MPa. Estimate the deflection after 1.5 months, assuming a creep coefficient of Cc=
1.8 and an effective prestress of 825 Mpa at that time.

Question: (Ex- 8.2)

For the beam in ex-8.1,


Compute the center deflection due to a 45 KN concentrated load applied at midspan, when the
beam is 1.5 months old after prestressing, Assume camber is 10.7 mm at this time prior to
application of the 45 KN load as computed in ex-8.1
