CLIENT PROFILE
CLIENTS ROBB AND BRIENNE STARK ARE APPROXIMATELY IN THEIR MID
TWENTIES AND ARE BOTH ARTISTS. ROBB IS AN AMERICAN MUSICIAN AND
BRIENNE IS A FINNISH FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHER. THEY LIVE IN PITTSBURGH,
PENNSYLVANIA IN A MIXED-USE-BUILDING ON MAIN STREET. THEY ENJOY THE
AREA BECAUSE OF VENUES THAT HOST LOCAL BANDS.
THEY BOTH ENJOY TRAVELING, PHOTOGRAPHY AND COLLECTING RECORDS.
THEIR STYLE PREFERENCE IS SCANDINAVIAN AND MODERN WITH COLORS THAT
ARE NEUTRAL . THEY WOULD LIKE A MUSIC ROOM AND A CUSTOM BUILT-IN
STORAGE PIECE WITH DISPLAY.

ADJACENCY MATRIX

ARCHITECTURAL STYLE
CORNICE
U-SHAPED CROWN

THIS MIXED-USE-BUILDING IS DUELED AS A

LAWYERS OFFICE ON THE FIRST FLOOR AND
RESIDENTIAL ON THE TOP HALF. ITS
ARCHITECTURAL STYLE IS ROMANESQUE
BECAUSE OF THE SIMPLE LINES, BOXY FRAME
AND ARCHED WINDOWS. SOME COMMON
FEATURES YOU CAN SEE ON THIS BULDING ARE
LARGE NARROW WINDOWS, U-SHAPED
CROWNS OVER THE WINDOWS, WIDE
PROJECTING CORNICES AND CORNICES.

QUOIN
LARGE NARROW WINDOWS

DESIGN CONCEPT

THE GOAL OF THE DESIGN IS TO CREATE A SPACE THAT IS FUNCTIONAL FOR LIVING COMFORTABLY, ENTERTAINING GUESTS, AND FOR CREATIVE THINKING
AND PRIVACY. A SCANDINAVIAN/MODERN STYLE WILL BE INCORPORATED WITH AN OLDER ROMANESQUE STYLE BUILDING BY USING NEUTRAL COLORS
LIKE GRAYS, BROWNS, WHITES, GREENS AND BLUES. THE THEME WILL BE COMFORTABLE AND ECLECTIC USING FINNISH STYLE FURNITURE WITH CLEAN
LINES AND SCULPTURED SHAPES PAIRED WITH MODERN SLEEK DCOR. LIGHT COLORED WOOD FLOORS THROUGHOUT THE MAIN LEVEL AND SOFT
NEUTRAL COLORED WALLS WILL MAKE THE SPACE FEEL BRIGHT AND OPEN WHEN THE LIGHT POURS IN FROM THE BIG, TALL WINDOWS. CARPET IN THE
PRIVATE AREAS OF THE HOME WILL HELP WITH NOISE ABSORPTION AND BRING A COMFORTABLE FEEL THROUGHOUT THE PERSONAL AREAS. THE DESIGN
WILL COHESIVELY CREATE A SPACE FIT FOR A YOUNG COUPLE WITH CREATIVE MINDS.

COLOR SCHEME

THE VALUE AND SATURATION OF THE BURNT ORANGE

WAS CHANGED TO A MORE NEUTRAL TAN. IT WILL
GIVE A MORE MODERN LOOK AND FLOW WITH THE
OTHER NEUTRAL COLORS.

THE GREEN ALSO WAS CHANGED SO IT WONT BE SO

BRIGHT. IT WILL GIVE IT A SOFTER FEEL BUT STILL
GIVE AN EYE POPPING APPEAL TO IT.

THE BLUES, WHITES AND GRAY WERE PULLED OUT

AND LEFT THE SAME BECAUSE THEY TIE IN NICELY
WITH ALL THE OTHER SOFT NEUTRAL COLORS GIVING
THEM A COHESIVE LOOK AND FLOW AROUND THE
SPACE.

808.3.5 Minimum lighting outlets.

At least one lighting outlet shall be provided
in every bathroom, hallway, stairway,
attached garage, and detached garage with
electric power, and to illuminate outdoor
entrances and exits.

The building should follow the listed code because it

allows the inhabitants to have lighting for wayfinding
and to complete tasks. Having lighting in these spaces Is
important to prevent falls and to be able to move
comfortably through the space.

808.3.1 Enclosed areas.

All enclosed areas, other than closets,
kitchens, basements, garages, hallways,
laundry areas, utility areas, storage areas
and bathrooms shall have a minimum of two
duplex receptacle outlets or one duplex
receptacle outlet and one ceiling or walltype lighting outlet.

The building should follow the listed code because it

provides outlets for the inhabitants to power the
building. The minimum requirements listed here may
not be enough outlets for a building of this size,
however.

Codes Analysis Discussion Question

Discuss how this information will specifically advance your future application of code factors while
designing. Provide at least two examples.
Knowing the codes when designing a home or building is a huge part of how the design is going to work
and effect the layout of a space. Allowing enough space and direct paths to vacate a place in an
emergency is on big decision of placements of walls or doorways. The codes will also help determine
what types of doors or walls are needed in the space. For instance in a shop I helped design the codes
for Iowa said that the doors going from the main part of the building going into the shop needed to be
all metal doors and had to be a certain fire-rate. Putting in wood doors were against the code.
Choosing materials that are code compliant will also affect how and what will be chosen. Certain paints
and wall coverings may not be compliant in a home compared to a business because of chemicals in
them or whether they are flame retardant. Also if you are repairing or restoring an old home or building
you would probably not use some of the same hazardous materials to match the old ones because they
could be found to be harmful now, like lead based paint. Checking codes before designing is an
important part of design and will determine the outcome of the space.

STUDY MODEL ANALYSIS

Study Model Analysis

The study model is of the Dining room. I chose the Dining Room because I wanted to see what it will do
to the space if I added a semi-wall with pillars and arches. I wanted the dining room to feel open but
also segregated from the bathroom and music room. I initially was going to put a solid wall in between
but decided it seemed too closed off and did not balance the room out and went against my open floor
design concept. A strength to the design is that the arches will accompany the already Romanesque
style of the building and a weakness is there isnt an extra barrier for sound coming from the music
room that could make it carry. The area will still have plenty of space to function with the dining table
and chairs and will allow for people to pass easily through. The room is proportionately sized so the
furniture is larger scaled as to fill the room. The arched wall will be a pleasing feature that can act as
focal point to the room and function as a cut off from the back rooms. Perhaps adding in a buffet or
piece of furniture to the back wall might make the room look more symmetrical. It may over crowd it
with the built in next to it in the entry of the home, however. I believe the room will function well for
the couple and add a little character to the space.

FURNITURE JUSTIFICATION
THE FURNITURE CHOSEN WILL GIVE THE CLIENT PLENTY OF SEATING FOR ANY COMPANY THAT COMES
OVER WITH A COMFORTABLE FEEL TO THEM. THE STYLE MATCHES THE MODERN SCANDINAVIAN LOOK
WITH THE SLEEK LINES AND LIGHT COLORS THEY ARE LOOKING FOR. IT ALSO HAS ROMANESQUE
FEATURES TO COMPROMISE WITH THE STYLE OF THE BUILDING. THE COLORS ARE NEUTRAL AND
BRIGHT GIVING JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF COLOR TO CATCH YOUR EYE. THE BEDROOM WAS SET UP
TO BE RELAXING AND SIMPLE MAKING IT EASY TO FREELY MOVE AROUND THE ROOM. THE DINING
ROOM ALLOWS FOR PLENTY OF OPEN SPACE TO VISIT WITH FRIENDS. THE OFFICE IS SET UP TO FACE
THE WINDOW ALLOWING FOR A VIEW IN FRONT OF AND TO THE LEFT. THERE IS PLENTY OF NATURAL
LIGHT BUT WILL NOT ALLOW FOR GLARING BECAUSE OF THE PLACEMENT OF THE DESK. THERE IS
AMPLE STORAGE AND A PRIVATE SPACE TO GET SOME WORK DONE.

FINISH AND LIGHT JUSTIFICATION

THE LIGHTING AND FINISHES CHOSEN WILL ALLOW THE CLIENTS TO HAVE THE SCANDINAVIAN LOOK OF LIGHT AND
BRIGHT SPACES THROUGHOUT THEIR HOME. THE WALLS ARE LIGHT COLORED LIKE A TYPICAL SCANDINAVIAN HOKE
WOULD BE TO BRIGHTEN UP THE HOME. WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN THERE WILL BE AMPLE LIGHT IN EACH SPACE. TWO
CHANDELIERS OVER THE DINING TABLE WILL ALLOW FOR A MODERN LOOK AND SOFT LIGHTING. DIRECT ACCENT LIGHT
PLACED TO SHOWCASE THE OBJECTS IN THE BUILT IN GIVE A FOCAL POINT TO THE ROOM. RECESSED CAN LIGHTS ARE
PLACED THROUGHOUT THE MAIN LEVEL FOR INDIRECT GENERAL LIGHTING TO HELP LIGHT THE SPACE. LIGHT COLORED
GREEN PAINT IN THE MASTER WILL ACCENT THE ROOM LEAVING IT LIGHT AND RELAXING. THE TRAY CEILING WILL MAKE
A FOCAL POINT FOR THE ROOM AMD TIES IN THE BEAUTIFUL ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS OF THE BUILDING. ALL THE
FINISHES USED ARE ECO FRIENDLY AND WILL HELP TO KEEP THE AIR CLEAN. THE LIGHT FIXTURES ARE ALSO ENERGY
EFFICIENT TO HELP TO CONSERVE ENERGY IN THE BUILDING BY USING LED LIGHTS. THE FLOORING IS ALL USED FROM ALL
ECO FRIENDLY CARPETS AND THE WAINSCOTING IS MADE OF RECLAIMED WOOD. ALL FINISHES AND LIGHTINGS ARE
CAREFULLY CHOSEN TO CREATE A SAFE AND GREEN PLACE WHILE ALSO CONFERRING TO THE CLIENTS NEEDS AND
WANTS.

ART JUSTIFICATION
THE ART WAS CAREFULLY AND THOUGHTFULLY CHOSEN TO MAKE THE DESIGN COHESIVE. THE
MASTER BEDROOM HAS TWO PICTURES OVER THE BED THAT ARE A FOCAL POINT TO THE WALL
AND ALSO GIVE A CALMING FEEL TO THE ROOM. THE MIRROR OVER THE DRESSER ADDS A LITTLE
CHARACTER TO THE ROOM AND FACES A WINDOW TO GIVE A NICE REFLECTION. THE PIECES
CHOSEN FOR THE DINING ROOM ARE TO ACCENT THE TABLE AND MAKE IT LOOK MORE APPEALING
AND TO MAKE IT FEEL LIKE A HOME. THE LIVING ROOM HAS A LAMP ON THE END TABLE THAT GIVES
AN EXTRA COLOR POP TO THE ROOM NEXT TO THE PILLOWS THAT WILL TIE ALL THE COLORS
TOGETHER WITH THE BOXES ON THE MEDIA CONSOL.

JUSTIFYING THE SOLUTION

THE CONCEPT FOR THE PROJECT WAS DEVELOPED BY DOING EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ON DESIGNS OFTEN SEEN IN SCANDINAVIAN HOMES PER THE CLIENTS
PREFERRED STYLE, WHILE KEEPING THE STYLE OF THE BUILDING, ROMANESQUE, IN CONSIDERATION AND ADHERING TO THE CLIENTS HOBBIES AND
LIFESTYLE, LIKE PHOTOGRAPHY AND MUSIC. THE GOAL OF THE DESIGN WAS TO CREATE A COMFORTABLE PLACE FOR THE CLIENTS TO COME HOME TO THAT
HAS SIMPLE DESIGNS WITH A RELAXING FEEL OF LIGHT EARTHY TONES LIKE MUCH OF SCANDINAVIAN DESIGNS DO. BY USING A LOT OF NEUTRAL COLORS
LIKE BLUES, GREENS, AND BROWNS AND WHITES THIS WILL ACHIEVE A CALMING FEEL. INCORPORATING DIFFERENT SHAPES AND TEXTURES
THROUGHOUT WILL ALLOW FOR THE NEUTRAL COLORS NOT TO DULL THE HOME BUT GIVE IT CHARACTER AND CHARM THAT WILL ACCENTUATE THE
ALREADY UNIQUE FEATURES OF THE BUILDING. WITH ONE OF THE CLIENTS COMING FROM A FINNISH DESCENT, SCANDINAVIAN DESIGNS OF SIMPLE LINES
AND NEUTRAL COLORS WILL OCCUPY MUCH OF THE SPACE.
WHILE BEGINNING TO LAY OUT PLANS TO ADD IN WALLS AND FURNITURE AND FINISHES IT REALLY MAKES YOU QUESTION WHETHER YOUR IDEAS WILL
WORK OR NOT. AFTER CREATING BUBBLE DIAGRAMS TO APPROXIMATELY PLACE ROOMS THEN MEASURING THEM OUT ON THE SCHEMATIC PLANS
SOMETIMES THE SPACE JUST ISNT QUITE AS BIG AS YOU THOUGHT, OR SOMETIMES MAY BE TOO BIG. I HAD THAT ISSUE WITH THE DINING AREA AND THE
HALLWAYS ON THE SECOND LEVEL. THERE WAS JUST TOO MUCH EMPTY SPACE AND I HAD TO FIND WAYS TO FILL IT WITHOUT OVERCROWDING WITH
FURNITURE. HUMAN FUNCTIONS AND SPECIAL RELATIONSHIPS ARE A LARGE FACTOR OF HOW A DESIGN SHOULD BE LAID OUT. HUMANS NEED A CERTAIN
AMOUNT OF COMFORTABLE SPACE TO FUNCTION IN LIKE WALKING DOWN HALLWAYS AND BEING ABLE TO PASS COMFORTABLY WITH ANOTHER PERSON
OR BEING ABLE TO ESCAPE A SPACE WITH MINIMAL OBSTACLES IN AN EMERGENCY. DESIGNING HOMES OR BUILDINGS SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE HUMAN
FUNCTIONS IN MIND TO ALLOW FOR THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF SPACE NEEDED.

REFLECTION
IN THIS CLASS THERE HAVE BEEN THINGS THAT WERE REFRESHERS FOR ME AND THINGS THAT I HAVE LEARNED NEW. THE MOST
HELPFUL THINGS IVE LEARNED AND THAT I WILL TAKE WITH ME OUT OF THIS CLASS ARE: MAKE SURE I AM UTILIZING ALL THE SPACE.
EMPTY SPACES OR CREVICES CREATE UNNECESSARY GAPS THAT CAN EITHER LEAVE A SPACE INCOMPLETE OR ALLOW FOR DUST
BUNNIES TO GET INTO. THE SCHEMATIC DRAWINGS ARE PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST HELPFUL TOOLS FOR ME. I DONT FEEL THAT
THE BUBBLE DIAGRAMS REALLY ALLOW ME TO SEE HOW WELL THINGS FIT AND IF I COULD I WOULD PREFER TO SKIP THAT STEP ALL
TOGETHER, THOUGH IM SURE THEY ARE A STEP FOR A REASON. THE SCHEMATIC DRAWINGS ALLOW FOR YOU TO TRY OUT
DIFFERENT SCENARIOS AND SEE WHAT KIND OF SPACE YOU ARE WORKING WITH. I ALSO REALLY ENJOY USING MY DRAWING SKILLS
TO CREATE SKETCHES OF A SPECIFIC SPACE. IN THE SPACE PLANNING CLASSES I DONT REMEMBER DOING TOO MANY OF THEM
WHEN PLANNING THE SPACE. IT REALLY ALLOWS YOU TO SEE HOW THE SPACE WILL LOOK. I FEEL THE SAME ABOUT THE STUDY
MODEL, I THINK THAT IS A VERY USEFULLY EXERCISE THAT ALLOWS YOU TO NOTE WHAT CHANGES MIGHT BE NEEDED OR IF
SOMETHING IS TOO CRAMPED OR TOO LARGE. I HADNT MADE A CEILING FOR THEM BEFORE AND IT REALLY BRINGS TO
PERSPECTIVE WHAT IT WILL FEEL LIKE IN THE SPACE. I REALLY ENJOYED AND LEARNED A LOT IN THIS CLASS AND LOOK FORWARD TO
USING THE SKILLS I HAVE LEARNED IN MY FUTURE CLASSES AND CAREER.
