Human beings have become a considerable environmental force in the last 10,000 years. With the advent
of agriculture 8,000 years ago, we started to change the face of the land.1 and with the industrial
revolution began to affect the atmosphere. Also, the recent increase in the world's population has
expanded the effects of our agricultural and economic activities, but population growth obscures what may
be a still more important interaction between human beings and the environment. While the world

population is doubling, the urban population is tripling in the entire world. In the next few years more than
half of the earth's population will live in urban areas.
The growth in urban areas is due to both the increase in immigration to the towns as well as in the fertility
of the urban population. Much of the displacement to the cities takes place by the desire of rural
populations to take advantage of the benefits that urban areas offer, such as increased opportunities for
education, health care and services such as recreationa. The poor in urban areas have fewer
opportunities for education to those who are not poor, but still have more opportunities than the rural
population.
This is a problem which faces the city of Merida as many people from the villages surrounding arrive to
the city looking for more opportunities to work and therefore "better quality of life. But the reality is
something else that already in the big cities as Merida there are a lot of people, that much more
complicated that quality of life that many would like to have. One of the disadvantages the migration of the
population to the big cities is that they begin to introduce diseases, such as stress, tension, diseases
related to poor diet because they do not have time to prepare a meal rich in vitamins, minerals etc as the
cities are large therefore the time to move from one place to another is increasing and the time which they
are to be relocated is much and the day does not reach to conclude with all the activities. Another problem
which is caused by the increase of population is that the basic services such as: transportation, housing
and health are crowded therefore do not reach for to cope with all users.
Another consequence of the increase of the population is that natural resources are under increased
pressure, threatening public health and development. Water scarcity, soil depletion, the loss of forests, air
and water pollution, and degradation of coastlines afflict many areas. As the world's population increases,
the improvement of living standards without destroying the environment is a global challenge.
If each country is committing itself to stabilize its population and to conserve their resources, the world
would be in a position to meet the challenge of sustainable development. The practice of sustainable
development requires a combination of wise public investment, effective natural resource management,
agricultural and industrial technologies clean, less pollution, and slower population growth.
