Workshop Handout : E-Learning (or Teaching with Technology)


The Aims of this workshop are:
• To understand how technology can be appropriately integrated into face-to-face (F2F) courses.
• To learn about specific examples and technologies / web-based tools that may be used in your class.
• To discuss ideas related to incorporating technology into your own courses.

The Topics to be covered are:


1. How a Hybrid (or Blended) Class Looks & Works.
2. Open-Source Tools.
3. Connection between Technology and Teaching Methodology.
4. Examples and Future Ideas.

1. How a Hybrid (or Blended) Class Looks & Works.


a. Technology – types of:
• Internet (WWW) • Other (e.g. graphing
• Mobile Phones calculators, clickers, etc.)
• Computer Software
b. Structure – this means making appropriate choices for:
• Communication • Opportunities to practice
• Activities • Assessment
c. Organization:
• Important to have the course planned ahead of time
• Helpful to think of the course in week-long blocks of time
d. Time Management – this means making better use of out-of-class time for:
• Class preparation
• Discussions
• Evaluations

Workshop Exercise (1):


For one of your courses:
• Choose one area in the “structure” item (communication, activities, practice, assessment) and
brainstorm at your table about which parts are best for F2F and which could incorporate
technology.
• Discuss your group’s ideas and expect to share a sentence or two about what you discussed with
the whole group.

Workshop Exercise (2):
For one of your courses:
• Decide upon two specific areas / assignments (e.g. HW #2, in-class activity #5, report #1, etc.)
that you think could be enhanced with the use of technology and write some notes about how
you think this could be done.
• Exchange your notes with someone else, read their ideas and make a brief comment upon it.
• Expect to share briefly with the whole group about what you’ve decided.

3. Connection between Technology and Teaching Methodology.


a. Appropriate use of technology means knowing how to get students involved!
b. Ideas about how technology can be used to enhance:
• Communication between student & teacher
• Discussion of content between students
• Presentation of content to students
• Presentation of student work to teacher
• Types of student work that can be expected
• Students individual initiative and responsibility

Workshop Exercise (3):


For one of your courses:
• Which area of your course needs improvement in terms of student involvement, initiative, and
responsibility?
• Discuss your thoughts with your table.
• Expect to share briefly with the whole group about what you discovered.

4. Examples and Future Ideas.


a. Examples of things you can begin doing NOW:
• SMS reminders about projects, tests, and important information
• Post lecture notes / assignment information online for student use & reference
• Include open-source materials and share resources with your students
• Find podcasts and share with your class / ask students to find others to share
b. Future Ideas:
• A “space” for your class (e.g. Moodle or a Wiki) to “meet” and “discuss” and share
information / ideas.
• In-Class demonstrations using technology
• Assignments requiring technology
• True hybrid courses (that both expect and rely upon technology during the entire
time)
• Mobile learning with Smart phones / internet
