likethatkmaandkmmanytimesintheBhagavadGitathissortofwordsarerepeatedandthatmakesamusicaleffect,a

meansdesireskmmeansdesirer.Sonakmakmmeansnotadesirerofdesire.Sonakmakmnormallywethinkof
desirerofsenseobjects,wesaydesireofsomebodymaydesireofsweets,somebodymaydesireofalcohol,somebodymay
desireofanewsmartphone.Likethatdifferentpeoplemaybethedesirersofdifferentthings.Sonormallywethinkofdesirer

riversflowinwards.Whatisthecomparisoninthisparticularverse?Theoceaniscomparedtotheconsciousnessofa
spiritualist.Andthentheriversarecomparedtothedesiresflowingintotheconsciousness.Sonowwhatdoesitmeanthatthe
desiresflowintotheconsciousness?Sothatessentiallymeansthatitisnotsomuchtalkingaboutourdesiringofsomething
asthepropositionforthatcomingfromoutsidetous.Whydontwedothis?whydontwetrythatout?thatpropositionfrom
outsidecomingtous.Sowhenthatcomesin,Krishnasaythatislikeriversflowingintotheocean.Andsothekmakmso
althoughthesamewordisusedwewanttodifferentiatebetweenthetwo.Thereisasubtledifferentiationandthisisrealistic
matter.Differentpeoplemaydifferentiatedifferently.Temptationmeanswhatcomestousdesiremeanswhatgoesoutfrom
us.Sothetemptationmeanssomethingisthereoutandthenitsnot.Sothatobjectispresentingitselftousand**our
attractiontous.Itsmorelikecallingtoustemptationanddesireswhatgoesoutfromus.
Soalthoughtodayssocietyishighlymaterialisticandpeopleactuallymaynotthinkofwantinggiveupmaterialdesires,
peoplewanttoenjoyasmuchastheywantbutstillevenwithinthesocietyalsopeopledorecognizethatwecannotgetinto
everytemptation.Nowadaysthereisahugealmostmanicobsessionwithobesity.Peoplearebecomingtoofat.Itsalmostlike
afatpersonisconsideredlikeuntouchable.Theylookeddownuponandfrownedupon,ashamedanditissuchaparadoxthat
actuallythesameculturethatglamorizesfoodmillionwaysthencondemnstheobesityinmillionways.Sothepeopleget
tormentedandtherearevarietyofeatingdisorders**nowthereis**eatingdisorderwhereinpeopleareobsessedwiththeir
shape,itislargelyinfemalebutsometimesitisthereinmalesalsobuttheideaisthatapersoneatssomefood,**andthen
sometimestheyeatalotandtheyhavetovomititoutandtheygetintogreatdepressionandwholepsychologicalcomplex
comesup.
Sothepointisthatitistruethatobesityisharmfulforhealthinthelongrunbuttheamountofobsessionthatistherethatis

oftenquitedisproportionate.Gowithwhatisrequired.ThepointIammakinghereisthatevenifintodayssocietypeopledo
recognizethatifyoueateverythingthatyoucanjustlaidyourhandandtongueonyouregoingto**.
SoinGoogle,theydidanexperimentintheircanteentheyhadthisvarioustoffeesandsweetesandthenformanyyearsthey
hadtheseintransparentcontents.Andthenwhentheycomefindingthatbecauseofpeopletheycallit**meansexcessive
eating.Peopleoftengetintolotofhealthcomplications.Soasanexperimenttheydecidedtoputall**fooditems.Thatmeans
alldentists**allsweetstheyputthem**contents,whereyoucouldntseewhatis.Onlywhenweaskisittherethentheywilltell
**andtheyfoundinjustsixweeksbeforethischangewasmadeandsixweeksafterthechangewasmade.Theamountof
sweetintake,amongtheiremployeesdroppedbysomethinglike1millioncalories.Theyhaveofcoursemanyemployeesand
itwasnotjustthatemployeeswouldcometothecanteenthepointisthatthesalesdropdownandthecanteenprotested
againstitbutitwasexperimentandthenpointoftheexperimentwasthatperceptionstimulatestemptation.Perceptionwhat
weobservestimulatesdesire.Soifweobservesomethingthedesirewillcomeoutandnowwemaysay,isntitcommon
sense?Thisisnotrocketsciencewearegoingtoseesomethingwearegoingtodesire.Butascomparedtotheextentof
maniacobsessionasthepeoplehavethateitherobesityorthataweightcontrol,weightlosspeoplespendlotofmoneyon
theirsurgeries,manythingstheytriedtodo.Thiswasfoundtoberelativelysimplestrategy.Whichdidseemto,ifweableto
getpeopletodecreasetheir**Soastheysayoutofsightisoutofmind.Sooutofsightisoutofmindonlyifthemindisoutof
it.ThatthereisthemindisnotoutofthemindisalreadytherethinkingIwantthatIwantthat,whenyouarenotinsightthen
wewillgoandseewherethatIcanfindandgetit.
Sothatmeanstherearetwodifferentthingswearetalkingaboutoneisthattherearecertaininternalimpressionswithinus,
whichwillimpelustogotowardsthesenseobjects.Andthenthereisanexternalpresenceofalluringsenseobjectswhich
kindlesdesiresinus.IntheBhagavadGitaKrishnatellsUddhavathatthereisdoubleattractiontothisworld,thesensesget
attractedtosenseobjectsandthesenseobjectsarealsoattractedtothesenses.Thatmeansthesenseobjectthereisthis
doubleattraction.Sopurificationmeansthatthedesiresinsideusgoaway.Wenolongerdesirethat,whereasselfcontrol
meansthedesireistherebutwedontindulgeinit.Sothepurificationwillanywaytaketime.Purificationdoesnthappen
overnight.Andwetogofromthestateofhavingunworthydesires,tohavepuredesireduringthatphaseweneedselfcontrol.
Sotheonewaytoselfcontrolthefoundoverhereisthatjustminimizetheperceptionofthesenseobjects.Andthatwaywe
canavoid,wecandecreasetheindulgence.Somepeopleanywayiftheyhaveverystrongdesiresthentheywillgoand
searchforittheygetitandenjoy.Butifthereisminimalexposurethathelpsindecreasingtheindulgence.
SoIstartedthetitleoftemptationsmaycomewedonthavetowelcome.Andwhatthatmeansisthatwhenweliveinthe

worldnowItalkedabouttemptationsintermsoftheseparticularsay,thesweetswhichwerethereoutside,usuallywetalkof
temptationsthatsomethingcomecomingfromoutside.Nowthisframeofoutsideandinsideisalsosomewhatmistaken.
Becausewhenwethinkofexternalasoutsideandinternalasinsidewearestillidentifyingwiththebody.Wearethinkingof
whatisoutsidethebodyisexternalwhatisinsidethebodyisinternalbutifweunderstandouridentityassoulsthenwecan
understandthateventhemindisexternaltous.Sowhatisoftenthoughtofasinternalisalsoexternal.Muchofehatgoeson
insideus.Sowhatisinsidemeisnotme,oreitherallthatisinsidemeisnotme.ThereisamindwhichisinsidemeandIm
notmymind.Nowtheideaofthemindthisisthetermmindisusedbythinkersallovertheworldanddifferentpeoplehave
differentideasofwhatthemindactuallyis.
ThereisonescientistwhosaidIhavenotstudiedmymind,becausethereisno**wedontknowwhatisthemindhowcanwe
studythesubjectwhichdoesntexisttome.Sonowthepointisthatthemindisnotagrossobject,anditsnotthatwemaynot
beabletostudyit.Butstillthemindisconstantlystudyingus.Tofindoutourweakpointsandattackusonthoseweakpoints.
Sowemayormaynotaccepttherealityofthemindbutallofusknowthatthereissomethinginsideuswhichmakesusact
againstourbestinterest.Whatthatforceis,howandwhenitacts?Differentpeoplehavedifferentideas.Whatitmaybe?But
thatideaisitselfthere.SoSigmundFreudisconsideredtobethefatherofmodernpsychologyandhehadmanydifferent
ideasmanyofwhichwerequietcrazy.Oneofhisideaswhichwasnotsocrazywasthathesaidthat,weallhavethe
intelligencebutthatintelligencethewordusedrationalfacultyorrationalityourrationalityislikeasmallraft,notaboathas
sides,raftsimplyisastructureofwoodtiedtogetherorjoinedtogether.Onewavecomesandjustfollow.Soourrationalityis
likearaftbutbelowthatthereisaturbulentoceanandthatoceanandisourirrationalemotions.Soweallhavewithinus
irrationalemotionswhichcanatanymomentoverthrowourintelligenceandhisreasoningwasthatthroughouthistorywhen
peoplelookedbacktherearephasesofinsanityinhistory.Whatdophasesofinsanitymeanthattherearetimeswhennotjust
onepersonbutawholegroupofpeople,hundredsofthousandsactinsamewaysandhowanyonecouldhaveactedlikethat,
afterwardspeople**soforexamplewhenHitlergotpoweroverGermanyandconvertedallofGermanyintoNazismandhe
didthehost.Andthewayhearrangedforthekillingofalmost10millionpeople5millionJews.Yestherewassomeanimosity
betweenGermansandJewsbutcompletelytrytoeliminateawholepopulationmillionsandmillionsofpeopleandto
brainwashawholecountrylikethat.Howdoesthiscanhappen?SoforexampleImnotmakingthepoliticalreligious
statementoverhere.ImjusttalkingabouttheHolocaustforustheHolocaustseemslikeadistantrealitybutwhatthe
HolocaustistheGermankillingoftheJewsprimarily.YouseesomeothertribesarealsokilledbutprimarilyJewssothat

theSecondWorldWarcametherewasallovertheworldahugeamountofoptimismthatyes!humanityinthevergeofbig
breakthroughandthroughthepowerofscienceandtechnologywearegoingtobecomethemostprogressiveintheworlds
history.Sosciencehascontinuedtomoveontechnologyhasdevelopedalotbutallovertheworldthereisthereisahuge
amountofskepticismhascomeandthisskepticismhascomebecauseitiseloquentandtragicstatementthatthegreatest
insightofthegreatestmindofthelastcenturycausethegreatestdisasterinthelastcentury.Thegreatestmindisconsidered
tobeEinsteinshisgreatestinsightwasE=mc2andthatledtothedevelopmentofatombomb,whichwasputonHiroshima
andNagasaki.NowatonelevelthenumberofdeathsinHiroshimaandNagasakiweremuchlesserthanwhatweretherein
GermanybutthewholemedianarratingatthattimewasframedinsuchawaythatGermanyandaccesspowersweere

Thereisthisgoodnesspassionandignorance.Andtherecanbereligiouspeoplewhoareinignoranceandthesereligious
peoplewhoareintheignorancewilldodevastatingharm.Andagaintheparadoxisyestherecouldhavebeensomethinglike

caneasilybeaggravated.AlthoughsayinIndiapossessionofgunisillegalinAmericathepossessionofgunsisconsidered
tobefundamentalrightandthereisstilladebateaboutsometimesespeciallywhensome**peoplegoandkillinnocentpeople
thenthereisaconsiderationthatweshouldstophavingpeoplepossessinggunbutstillwhetherthegunsarethereornot
there,sothesheeraccessibilityoftechnologymakesitpossibleforanyone.Nowadaysmanycompanies,manyemployees
getverystressed,sotheincidentsofsuicidesareincreasing.Sojustlikesomecompaniessaywanttoensurethattheir
employeessaysurfpondsideduringtheyworkhours.Sosimilarlysomecompaniesalsokeepingamonitorthat,areanyof
ouremployeessearchingsuicide?ManypeopletheygetsofrustratedandtheythinkevenifIhavetodieletmedieinthe
bank,theflush.SooneofthefavoritesearchesinGoogleis,howtocommitadramaticsuicide.Soyouknowthereisthis

ultimately,theywillhavetotakeresponsibilityofhowmuchtheyeat.Sotheremaybeadvertisementsallaroundpeoplehave
tocontrolthemselves.Becomingresponsibleinthiswayisextremelydifficult,sowithrespecttotheavailabilityoftemptations
thatissomethingwhichisunlikelytochangeinthenearfuture.Inthesocietytherateisgoingunlesstherearesome
cataclysmicchangeswherethecultureisgoingrightnowtheaccesstheavailabilityofavenuesforindulginginlust,indulging
ingreed,indulginginanger,theyaregoingtobethere.Theyregoingtobetheremoreandmore.Thefrustrationhasalways
beentherethroughouthumanhistory.Lifeissuchthatlifewillcausefrustration.WhetheritisBCorAD,whetheritisthe

modernageorthepremodernage,orpostmodernagewhereveritisnatureofthisworldisourplanswillgowrongwewill
getfrustrated,peoplewilldisappointus,peoplewillbetrayusandhowdowedealwithproblemsthatistheessentialhuman
artofliving.Theessentialhumanartoflivingishowtodealwithproblemsbecauseproblemsarejustafactoflife.Sonow
temptationsusuallypeopledontthinkthemasproblems,theythinkoftemptationsassomethingwhichweenjoybutifwe
enjoyittoomuchthenitwillbecomeaproblem.Buttwoproblemscomeup,thewholeideaofenjoymentthewayitis
glamorizedintodaysculturethatlittleisneverenoughitbecomeslikethat.Okaypeoplesayyouenjoy,enjoyinregulationbut
theprobleminenjoyinginregulationisregulationdoesnotprovidesatisfactionbecausethemindcravesmoreandmore.

theairwillautomaticallygooff.SolikethatifourfocusasIsaidwedonthavetowelcomethetemptationsthatisthepointwe
