Take care of your vision,

hearing and oral health
TEETH

You should visit an optometrist (eye doctor) at

least once every year for a vision test. Throughout
the year, look for warning signs of changes in your
vision squinting, headaches and red irritated eyes
which leads to rubbing your eyes. Eye diseases and
vision problems can go unnoticed, because people
think that changes in vision are a natural part of
ageing. Its a good idea to have regular eye checks to
make sure you are wearing the right prescription.
If you do notice any changes in your vision, it is
important to get your eyes tested as soon as possible
by an optometrist or ophthalmologist (a medical
eye specialist).
Eat for good vision, quit smoking, wear
sunglasses and use safety eyewear and limit when
you can time in front of a screen. Your local
optometrist can perform an eye test. Regular eye
tests may help detect problems early, which can
improve your chances of receiving effective
treatment and support.

Teeth must last a lifetime! Eat healthy foods and

brush your teeth twice a day. Your teeth are
important in many ways. If you take care of them,
they'll help take care of you. Strong, healthy teeth
help you chew the right foods to help you grow. They
help you speak clearly, sing loudly and make your
smile as big as a crocodile's smile.
After you eat, bacteria go crazy over the sugar on
your teeth, like ants at a picnic. The bacteria break it
down into acids that eat away tooth enamel, causing
holes called cavities.
Plaque also causes gingivitis which is gum
disease that can make your gums red, swollen, and
sore. Your gums are those soft pink tissues in your
mouth that hold your teeth in place.
If you don't take care of your teeth, cavities and
unhealthy gums will make your mouth very, very
sore. Eating meals will be difficult. And you won't
feel like smiling so much.
Visiting the dentist at recommended intervals
that suit your dental condition and age to screen for
dental disease and more serious diseases of the
mouth telling the dentist about any general health
problems and medications you are taking, as this
may affect your dental health and treatment.

Good hearing makes life easier. You can hear

what's going on around you, what other people are
saying and hear what you're saying.
One of the best people to see for a hearing
problem is an Audiologist (Ear Doctor). An Ear
Doctor understands how hearing works and how to
help those who don't hear normally. Having trouble
hearing could be as simple as there being too much
wax in your ears. This can be removed by a doctor
and help you hear normally again. Sometimes it can
be more complicated as the ear has several different
parts that we cant see.
Your hearing may change as you age. While some
hearing loss is considered normal as you get older,
you are more likely to have problems with your
hearing if you are over 55 years of age. Your hearing
may also be affected by other factors such as your
family history, general health and work history.
There are three types of hearing loss:
~ Conductive hearing loss (when sounds are
blocked in the middle and outer ear from reaching
the hearing nerve)
~ Sensorineural hearing loss (when sounds can
reach the hearing nerve but the hearing nerves send
a distorted or damaged message to the brain)
~ Mixed hearing loss (a combination of
conductive and sensorineural hearing loss).
Regular check-ups with your Audiologistmean
you will always have healthy ears.
