CR&D Deemed Calculation for Low-Voltage, Dry-Type Energy Star Rated Distribution Transformers

The purpose of this deemed calculation tool is to determine the amount of conservation credit that can be claimed by commercial and
industrial buyers of new Energy Star distribution transformers. The deemed calculation applies to 13 voltage classes and for certain singlephase and three-phase dry-type transformers. These categories reportedly cover over 90 persent of the current market sales for lowvoltage distribution transformers. To determine the exact amount of CR&D credit for a transformer the user must indicate the voltage
level in kVA, whether it is single-phase or three-phase and indicate that it is Energy Star labeled. The tool uses input data to calculate the
amount of kWh savings that would result from the purchase of an ES transformer as compared to a standard energy efficiency transformer
based on the DOE EPACT92 standards. The energy savings, thus calculated, are used to determine the amount of credit due to the buyer.

Calculated C&RD Credit in $ per unit:

BACKGROUND NOTES:
A) Energy efficiency varies with nameplate load factor.
In general, the lower the load factor the greater the
energy efficiency of the Energy Star model relative
to a standard model low voltage transformer. At 20%
load, ES efficiency is about 97.8% while the standard 150C model estimate is about 96.4%.
B) At 35% load, the effciencies are 98% and
about 97.3%. With a load factor of 20%, a 75kVA transformer.
is transforming 15kVA of, typically, 408V current to 208V/120V current, instantaneously.
C) Low voltage transformers have a primary voltage of 1200 volts. Efficiency
is measured at 35% of nameplate load, at 75C temperature for dry-type transformer
D) 'Energy efficiency is measured for a specific load and temperature and is defined as:
Output in kVA divided by kVA Output plus Losses.
E) 'kWh losses = 8760/yr * kVA Rating * % load * % losses for each type model.
F) 'Losses, measured in watts, are due to core inefficiency and winding inefficiency.
